CatsareillustratedinmanuscriptsthroughouttheMiddleAges,ofteninexquisitedetailandfrequentlyaccompaniedbytheirmortalenemies,mice.Theyarepicturedinbestiaries,naturalphilosophytextsandhuntingmanualsalongsidetextualdescriptionsofcatsandotheranimals.Buttheyappearmorefrequentlyasmarginalia-smallmarginalillustrationsinmanuscriptborders,bearingnorelationtothetextinquestion,whethertheological,liturgicalorromance,butsimplyintendedtoamuseandentertainthereader.
在整个中世纪,猫经常出现在书籍手稿的插画上。
细节清晰的猫、猫与鼠等。
猫被画在动物寓言集、格物入门和狩猎手册上。
但它们作为旁注出现在手稿的边缘,有时候和书的文本内容关系不大,只是为了娱乐读者而已。

intheearlyfourteenthcenturyArnoldofLiegecomparedacattoyingwithamousetotheDevilplayingwithahumansoul.Catswerekeptaspets,admiredfortheirwilinessandvilifiedfortheirdevilishnature.Theywerenurturedascompanionsforthoseinreligiousorders,butalsousedintheartsofmagic.Andamedievalcatprobablyhadfewerthanninelivestotoywith-dangerwasneverfararoundthecorner,whetherintheformofafur-traderorarowdysetofstudents.
在中世纪插画里的猫总带着伪装,不然就是躲在灶台边上埋伏老鼠,不然就是变成某种带有魔力的东西——比如驾着车带着挪威女神芙瑞雅。
不过,猫也有不好的隐喻,比如14世纪时,列日的阿诺德就把猫捕鼠比作魔鬼玩弄人类的灵魂。
猫也能当宠物养,这得益于它们聪慧狡黠的天性。
它们被修道会士或者巫魔会众当做伙伴。
而且在中世纪,猫可能没有九条命。
皮草贸易商会杀了它们扒皮卖,而学生们则会粗鲁地虐待它们。

在中世纪的英国,公猫最经常被叫做吉比(吉尔伯特的略称)。

没有什么材料说明当时有人为猫买什么特别的食物;猫们自己抓老鼠吃,或者在主人心情好的时候被赏以剩饭。

皇家当然可以奢侈。
法国国王查理六世的王后,巴伐利亚的伊萨贝拉,在她的宠物身上花费巨大,宠物松鼠的项圈使用了金的皮带扣,上面还绣了珍珠。

无论是抓老鼠的猫还是宠物猫,都和主人关系紧密。
15世纪的时候,很多礼仪指南都指出让家里的动物在餐厅里逛荡甚至坐在桌子上,用手喂食或抚摸它们都是没教养的。
《礼仪之书》说:

猫也经常进入卧室。
《自然之书》对这种现象很不满。
书中要求主人们“把猫狗丢出去,或者给它们块破布”。
一个中世纪晚期的故事讲述了一个骑士被倾心的妇人给拒绝了,他半夜乔装潜入妇人的卧室,却被猫给抓伤了。
鉴于这位骑士的脑筋灵活,妇人做了他的情妇。
然而这个骑士却拒绝和妇人结婚,理由是怕她的猫!
InThomasdeSaluces'slatefourteenth-centuryLeContedesTroisPerroquels(TheTateofThreeParrots),aladymeetswithherloverinherhouse.Thenextdayshequestionsherpetparrots.Thefirsttwospeakoftheaffairsoshekillsthem,blamingtheirdeathsonherpetcat(thethirdparrot,decidingthatdiscretionisthebetterpartofvalour,keepsquiet!
).
在14世纪晚期托马斯·德·萨鲁斯的《三只鹦鹉的故事》里,一个妇人在房子里和他的情人会面。
第二天她问她的宠物鹦鹉(昨天看见了什么)。
前两只鹦鹉把过程照实说了,结果就被这妇人给杀了,还归咎给她的猫(第三只鹦鹉保持了沉默)。

家猫有被人抓住剥了皮卖的风险。
1268年的巴黎,tienneBoileau(路易九世任命的贸易官,于1261-1271年担任这个职位,也是被人们最早知道的巴黎贸易官)给半打野猫皮估了两便士的税,同样数量的家猫皮则是一便士。
