Inhisresponsespeech,SeonShoopmanconfidedthat,outofsixteenschoolsheappliedto,Purduewastheonlyonetoadmithim,providedheattendoursummerbootcamp.Threeandahalfyearslater,he,too,earnedhisPurduedegree,withhonors,becomingthefirstinhisfamilytograduatefromcollege.Seonsaidthat,morethananyothermotive,hewantedtodoitforthemotherwhohadpushedhimalltheway.“WhenIwantedtoquit,shetoldmenotto.WhenIwantedtoleaveschool,shetoldmenotto.Shetoldmetofight,bestrong,andmakesomethingofmyself.”
Someintoday’sworldthinktheyhavediscoveredsomethingnewintheconceptof“grit.”AHarvardBusinessSchoolarticlejustlastfallwastitled“OrganizationalGrit,”andreportedthat,quote,“Highachievershaveextraordinarystamina....Wheneasierpathsbeckon,theircommitmentissteadfast.Gritpredictswhowillaccomplishchallenginggoals.”Sothat’swhyaHarvardMBAcosts200grand.
