TibetanantelopesliveontheplainsofTibet,Xinjiang,andQinghai.Watchingthemmoveslowlyacrossthegreengrass,I’mstruckbytheirbeauty⑥.I’malsoreminded⑦ofthedangertheyarein.Theyarebeinghunted,illegally,fortheirvaluablefur⑧.
MyguideisZhaxi,avillagerfromChangtang.HeworksattheChangtangNationalNatureReserve.ThereserveisashelterfortheanimalsandplantsofnorthwesternTibet.ToZhaxi,thelandissacred⑨andprotectingthewildlifeisawayoflife.“We’renottryingtosavetheanimals,”hesays.“Actually,we’retryingtosaveourselves.”
The1980sand1990swerebadtimesfortheTibetanantelope.Thepopulationdroppedbymorethan50percent.Hunterswereshooting⑩antelopestomakeprofits⑪.2Theirhabitatswerebecomingsmallerasnewroadsandrailwayswerebuilt.
Inordertosavethisspeciesfromextinction,theChinesegovernmentplaceditundernationalprotection.Zhaxiandothervolunteerswatchedover⑫theantelopesdayandnight⑬tokeepthemsafefromattacks⑭.Bridgesandgateswereaddedtolettheantelopesmoveeasilyandkeepthemsafefromcarsandtrains.
Themeasureswereeffective⑮.Theantelopepopulationhasrecovered⑯andinJune2015,theTibetanantelopewasremoved⑰fromtheendangeredspecieslist.Thegovernment,however,doesnotintend⑱tostoptheprotectionprogrammes,sincethethreats⑲totheTibetanantelopehavenotyetdisappeared.
