Perhaps,butsomedevelopmentalpsychologists()havearguedthatthis“play”ismorelikeascientificinvestigationthanonemightthink.
Takeacloserlookatthebabyplayingatthetable.Eachtimethebowlofriceispushedoverthetableedge,it
fallsintheground---and,intheprocess,itbelongsoutimportantevidenceabouthowphysicalobjectsinteract;bowlsofricedonotfloodinmid-sit,butrequiresupporttoremainstable.Itislikelythatbabiesarenotbornknowingthebasicfactoftheuniverse;noraretheyeverclearlytaughtit.Instead,babiesmayformanunderstandingofobjectsupportthroughrepeatedexperimentsandthenbuildonthisknowledgetolearnevenmoreabouthowobjectsinteract.Thoughtheirrangesandtoolsdiffer,thebaby’sinvestigationandthescientist’sexperimentappeartosharethesameaim(tolearnaboutthenaturalworld),overallapproach(gatheringdirectevidencefromtheworld),andlogic(aremyobservationswhatIexpected?
