In1830,presidentAndrewJacksonsignedtheIndianRemovalAct.ThisactrequiredallIndianstomigratetothewestoftheMississippiRivertoallowfortheexpansionoftheUS.AmericanIndiansweretreatedasamilitary“enemy”until1924,whenthefewIndiansstillaliveatthatpointweregranted(准予)UScitizenship.ThatwasthefirsttimethattheUSgovernmentformallyrecognizedtherightsofIndians.
