Formanyyears,scholarshaveregardedMyMortalEnemyassomewhatofanenigma.Writteninonlyafewmonthsduringtheearlyspringof1925andpublishedin1926,WillaCather’sshortestnovelwassandwichedinbetweenTheProfessor’sHouse(1925)andDeathesfortheArchbishop(1927).WhilethesubjectmatteroftheselattertwoworkscanbetracedtoCather’sexperienceinthedesertSouthwest,MyMortalEnemyseeminglyhasnothingtodowiththesesubjectsorherNebraskaroots;itappearstohaveeoutofnowhere,puzzlingthosewhohavetriedtofitthisratherirregularworkintoalogicalprogressionofCather’sartisticdevelopment.ThequestionofwhatcausedCathertowritesuchanovelatthispointinhercareer,forexample,hasstillnotbeenanswereddefinitively.Onemonlyheldhypothesis(假说)wasfirstvoicedbyMarcusKlein,whoinhis1961introductiontothenovelwrotethatforCather,“ThestoryofMyraHenshawemusthavebeenapersonalcrisis.”Klein,though,acknowledgedthathecouldnotprovehistheory,“becausethereisavailablenorecordotherthanthenovel.”EmmyStarkZitterhasrecentlyarguedthatinMyMortalEnemyandSapphiraandtheSlaveGirl(1940)Catherexercisestheautobiographicalimpulse(冲击)byputtingdetailsofherownlifeintoherfiction,but,likeKlein,sheisunabletonamewhich“details”ofherlifeCatherdrewoninwritingMyMortalEnemy.

Inlightoftheevidencepresentedinthisarticle,though,IbelievethatCatherintendedhermentsaboutthemodelforMyraHenshawetoserveasredherrings(转移注意力的言语)thatwouldprotectherrelationshipwiththecouplewhoweretheprototypes(原型)fortheHenshawes,bothofwhomwerestillalivein1925.MarkMadiganhasrecentlyconfirmedhowCatherin1905hadtoholdoffpublishingTheProfile(《侧画像》)becauseoffearsthatthemaincharactermightrecognizeherselfandmitsuicide,andtwentyyearslaterCatherwouldhavebeenwellawareofhowherdescriptionoftheHenshawesmighthaveaffectedboththereallifewife(whodiedin1929)andhusband(whodiedin1949)iftheyhadrecognizedthemselves.ItismyargumentthattheHenshawesweremodeledafterpeopleCatherknewnotinNebraskabutratherinNewYork:
