“WhenBobbytoldmehisteamwantedtobeSecretSantasandbuymykidstoys,atfirstIthoughtwedidn’tneedanyhelp,”Batemanrecalls.“Itreallytouchedme.Itoldhimwhatthekidsreallyneededwaswarmclothes.”

BythetimeQuallsreachedthehouse,thefamilyhadgottenout,buttheirhomewasseverelydamaged.HiscoworkershadfoundJoJohidingunderapileofclothesinabackbedroom.HehadstoppedbreathingandhadbeengivenCPRandrushedtothehospital.QuallslearnedthatJoJowasnowonlifesupportandmightnotmakeitthroughthenight.HerushedtothehospitalwithLt.MarkEskew,whoplacedastuffedteddybearinafirefighter’ssuitonJoJo’sbed.
“Ijustkeptprayingmylittleboywouldopenhiseyes,”Batemanrecalls.“TherewasnothingelseIcoulddo.Theywerepumpingblackandthickliquidoutofhislungsandstomachfordays.”
Afterafewdays,though,JoJoregainedconsciousness,andthetubesweretakenoutofhisthroat.Whilehebegantoslowlyrecover,thelocalnewspaperandTVstationsgotholdofthestory,andtheSecretSantaPlanofQuallsandhisfellowfirefighterssnowballed.Beforelong,thefirestationwasoverflowingwithboxesoftoys,food,towels,andclothes.Peoplecalled,wantingtodonatefurnitureandappliancestoo.ByDecember23,BatemanandTubbshadmovedtheirkidsintoanewrentalhome.ByChristmasEve,JoJowasreadytoleavethehospital,andthefirefighterswerereadytodeliverthefamilytheirveryownChristmasmiracle.
