Inaworldwhereallmenarerushing,wheresomelostthemselvesinshiningcolors,whileothersgetindulgedinself-pity,rottinginthecorner,wherethesublimationofhumanspiritseemsjustlikeatalewaybackintime,wemaymoreneed《Babette’sFeast》thananyothertime,sincethelightnessoflifeisnotwhatwecanbear,andtheinnerpeacetransformsthewholeworldwesee.Atruefeastisnotonlyanabundantorluxuriousdinner,butthatofthehappinesssoakedwiththechef’sdevotionandlove;justasagoodfilmisnotmerelyastory,butaboutlife—anewperspectiveonlifecanbegained.
Afterall,somanyofusaspireaftersplendor,yetcan’ttolerantthe“hardnessandcruelty”ofcommondays;still,therearesomepersons,lackingthecouragetoembracethebrillianceoflife,withdrawntotheirlong-keptfaiths.Tranquilityorclamorousness,blandnessoreffulgence,tobeornottobe,that’saquestion.Babettejustshowsthebalance.The1987Danishmovie,《Babette’sFeast》,directedbyGabrielAxelandawardedthenyear’sbestforeignlanguagefilmattheAcademy,maygiveussomenewreflections.
Storybeginswiththesceneofaremoteandbeautiful,butalsobarrenandchillywesterncoastofJutlandinDenmarkinthe19thcentury.Apastorflankedbyhistwodaughters,alongwiththelocalvillagers,livedasimpleandausterelife.Alwayspoorlyclothed,theyfedonbreadporridgewithdryfisheverymeal;towhom,thefullsenseoflifeliesinthesweetfantasytowardtheheaven.Theearthlylife,however,ismerelyashortperiodofjourneytotheeternalparadise,whichmustbebeard.So,allsuitorsobsessedwiththebeautyandeleganceendowedbythetwogirlswererejectedbytheirfather,stickingtothefaiththatearthlyloveandmarriagewerescantworth,ormerelyemptyillusion.
Still,lifewasnotwithoutriffles---somesubtleemotioncouldalwaysstirthesentimentofgirlsintheiryouth.Oneyoung,handsomecavalrysolider--Lorens,andanotherfamoussingerfromParisopera–Papin,desperatelyfellinlovewiththetwogirls—MartineandPhillippaseparately.However,thepuritanlifetherewasso“cruelandhard”,justwithlimitedlivingmaterial,interspersedwithinsipidreligioussermons.Resolutelydecidingthatanewglaryimageofhimselfshouldbefoundinhisprofessionalandreputationworld,LorensfarewelledtoMartine,andleftthevillage.Thelatter–Papin,onceoccasionallyenchantedbytheeuphonyvoiceoftheyoungerdaughter,attemptingtomakeherangelsongshinethroughoutParis,voluntarilytaughthervocalistlessonsdevotedly.Yet,whentheaffectionatesingingdisturbedthegirl’sinneremotion,sheimmediatelyrealizedthatsuchfeelingsshouldbeabandoned,thusdiscontinuedthelessons.Melancholyandanguished,PapainreturnedtoParis,neverback,
Yearswentby,beyondtheoldpastor’sdeath,theonceflimsydayslostinloveandmiddleageoftwosisters.Theystillservedthosevillagersjustasbefore,yettherigidreligionbeliefdidn’tcreatetheharmonyandtheholysongsfailedtokeepthebrotherhoodoncesharedvillagedwellers,instead,replacedbyestrangementandcomplaint—towhich,thevirtuoussisterscouldnothelp,untilawoman,Babette,ranintolife.HavinglostherhusbandandsoninthecivilwarofFrance,shecarriedaletterofPapin–Philippa’sformersuitor,supplicatingtoserveasahousekeeper.Inthefollowing20years,Babettestayed,workedforthem,neverrepiningaboutthemeager,crudemealorclothes,yetinjectinggleamsofvigorintotheinsipiddailyroutinethere.
Iftimejustfloatedawaysilentlyasthis,thebeautyofthisstorymaynotbeseen.Surprisecamethatthelottery-asBabettejokinglyputit--theonlylinkbetweenherandParis,won10,000franks.Speakingnothingofreturning,Babetteinsteaddecidedtospendthisbigsuminpreparinga“realFrenchdinner”,ontheoccasionofthefoundingpastor’sonehundred’sbirthday,forthesistersandthesmallcongregationofvillagers.Variousingredientsarrived,includingturtles,quails,andabulkofice,evenwithdelicategobletsandexotic,sumptuousshampine,afterwhichpreparationforthefeastcommenced.“Feast”,infact,isjustthehighlightofthemovie—whenLorens,thethensuitorforMartine,nowageneraloftheroyalty,cameasanuninvitedguest.
Ironically,duringthefeast,sinceintheirbelief,toneiswhatthegodendowsustopray,nottoindulgeourselvesinculinarydelicacies,allweretryingtokeepreserved,exceptLorens,whocontinuouslycomplimentedontheextraordinarydrinkandfood,whichevenremindedhimselfofafeastmanyyearsbeforeatParis.Gradually,thegastronomiesfullofwarmness,infact,hasbeenbreakingdownthedistrustandsuperstitiousatmosphere,whichhasbeenfreezingthevillagers‘heartsforsolong.Somebegantocheerhallelujah;longlostsmilesreappearedonpeople’sfaces;oldwrongsforgotten;brotherhoodreturned,andancientloveswererekindled--thefeasthaselevatedallofthem,notonlyphysically,butevenspiritedly.Atthispoint,inthesoftcandlelightandfloatingtweedle,inthemoonlightshroudingtheearth,peoplesanganddance,handinhandwitheachother,aroudthewellintheyard,feelingthehappinessandeternity,disseminatedbytheholyspiritsineverycorner.
Storycametoanend,asitbegan,justlikeabreezefanningoverwater.Noquirkyplot,justwithsoftsinging,andreligiousprayingembellishedatintervals,thewholescenehasbeencastedatthesmallvilliage.Followingagoodstoryisjustliketheprocessofcollectingpiecestogether—wemaybeatseaatfirst,yetwhenthewholescenewaspresentedbeforeoureye,,beautyemerged,newreflectionwasgained,andourinnermostemotionswererekindled,asifwehavebeentravellingthroughanothercircleoflife.Throughoutwatchingthismovie,wemayfindourheartsjustbeatingquitely,evenwithoutournotice,asifbyescapingtheclamorousouterworldtemporariy,weregainthelonglostpeace,orinotherwords,reachingourspirithome,whoseexistencemayevenhavelongbeenforgotten,inourhurriedlyliferoutine.
Innerpeacehasnothingtodowithreligion,withpuritanself-refrain,withextremelyinadequatelivingmaterial.Thefather,foundingpastoroftheChristiansect,didn’thavemuchappearance,yetsetthegeneralbackgroundofthismovie,whichcouldbeseenineveryaspectofvillager’sdailylife.Thoserigidpuritandisciplinaries,sacredreligiousbeliefs,tosomeextent,hasimprisonedthemindsofallthepeoplethere,evenincludingtheyoungMartineandPhilippa.Sinceearthlylovewasconsideredas“scantworth”,emotionshouldonlybeconsecratedtogods,whileaffectiontoanothermanisakindofsin.MartinerejectedPapin’slove,assomekindofdefenseofherlong-keptfaith;thesameasPhilippa,whoneverreallyhadarelationshipwithLorens,couldonlystandbesidethewindow,reminishingtheonce“silentyoungman”.WecannotsaythatthelivesofMartinandPhilippaaretragedies,sinceeveryonehashisrighttochoosethewayhelives;yetwhatifweimagine,thetimewhenfairfaceswerereplacedbywinklesscramblingontheforehead,whenhairsturnedgray,whenlifeonlymeantprayingandlookingbackwithregrets,whatmoodwouldtheybein?
Afterall,MartineandPhilippa,wereoncesocharming,andsotalented.Inthesummeroftheiryouth,theybothhadabeautifulintersectionwithsomeonewhotheyloveandwholovesthem,buttheymissed,simultaneously,missingthebeautyoflife.Maybethisisjustwhatthefathercalled“sacredfaith”,yetitisthefaith,thatburiedtheyouthofMartineandPhillippa.
Infact,brillianceoflifedoesn’tcollidewithourcherishedfaith;alike,earthlypleasureshasnothingtodowithunpiety,andasterismmayalsonotfavoredbythesacredspirits;sincebeautyiswhatthegodsendowstous,whyshouldn’twebravelyembracethebrillianceofourlife?
Withdrawntotheirextremelycrudelivingmaterial,thevillagershavebeenreducedtocomplaintsanddiscontentwitheachother.Andasamatterofirony,whenconfrontedwiththebrandbanquet,theyshowedkindofhesitation.Martineevendreamedofbeastsbarbecuingoverfire,fearingthesensoryfeastwouldblockthewaytotheheaven.Everydaypeopleprayedthankstothegods’blessing,however,withoutBabettet,withoutherfeast,maybenoonereallyhavetouchedtheblessingofthegods,,ortheeternalhappiness,alike.
However,desiresandlusts,arenotlifeitselfinessence,neither,thepurposes.Wecannotbelostinthosefloridvanityorpleasures,whileleavingbehindthesourceofmercy,thesublimationofspiritasaman,orthecorepartofourheart--whichcouldbeseenintheletterofPapin:
IhavedeploredthefatethatkeptyourvoicefromfillingthegrandoperahouseofParis,whenIthinkofyou,honored,respected,andsurroundedbyawarmandhappyswarmofchildren;whenIthinkofmyself,alonely,grayingoldman,forgottenbythosewhoonceapplaudedandadoredme,Ifeelthatitisyouthatchoosethebetterpathinlife.Whatisfame?
