PREFACE.
Thisbookispragmatical,notphilosophical;apracticalmanual,notatreatiseupontheories.Itisintendedforthemenandwomenwhosemostpressingneedisformoney;whowishtogetrichfirst,andphilosophizeafterward.Itisforthosewhohave,sofar,foundneitherthetime,themeans,northeopportunitytogodeeplyintothestudyofmetaphysics,butwhowantresultsandwhoarewillingtotaketheconclusionsofscienceasabasisforaction,withoutgoingintoalltheprocessesbywhichthoseconclusionswerereached.
Itisexpectedthatthereaderwilltakethefundamentalstatementsuponfaith,justashewouldtakestatementsconcerningalawofelectricalactioniftheywerepromulgatedbyaMarconior[6]anEdison;and,takingthestatementsuponfaith,thathewillprovetheirtruthbyactinguponthemwithoutfearorhesitation.Everymanorwomanwhodoesthiswillcertainlygetrich;forthesciencehereinappliedisanexactscience,andfailureisimpossible.Forthebenefit,however,ofthosewhowishtoinvestigatephilosophicaltheoriesandsosecurealogicalbasisforfaith,Iwillherecitecertainauthorities.
Themonistictheoryoftheuniverse—thetheorythatOneisAll,andthatAllisOne;thatoneSubstancemanifestsitselfastheseemingmanyelementsofthematerialworld—isofHinduorigin,andhasbeengraduallywinningitswayintothethoughtofthewesternworldfortwohundredyears.ItisthefoundationofalltheOrientalphilosophies,andofthoseofDescartes,Spinoza,Leibnitz,Schopenhauer,Hegel,andEmerson.
Thereaderwhowoulddigtothephilosophicalfoundationsisadvisedto[7]readHegelandEmerson;andhewilldowelltoread“TheEternalNews,”averyexcellentpamphletpublishedbyJ.J.Brown,300CathcartRoad,Govanhill,Glasgow,Scotland.Hemayalsofindsomehelpinaseriesofarticleswrittenbytheauthor,whichwerepublishedinNautilus(Holyoke,Mass.)duringthespringandsummerof1909,underthetitle“WhatisTruth?

InwritingthisbookIhavesacrificedallotherconsiderationstoplainnessandsimplicityofstyle,sothatallmightunderstand.Theplanofactionlaiddownhereinwasdeducedfromtheconclusionsofphilosophy;ithasbeenthoroughlytested,andbearsthesupremetestofpracticalexperiment;itworks.Ifyouwishtoknowhowtheconclusionswerearrivedat,readthewritingsoftheauthorsmentionedabove;andifyouwishtoreapthefruitsoftheirphilosophiesinactualpractice,readthisbookanddoexactlyasittellsyoutodo.

CHAPTERI.TheRighttobeRich.
Whatevermaybesaidinpraiseofpoverty,thefactremainsthatitisnotpossibletoliveareallycompleteorsuccessfullifeunlessoneisrich.Nomancanrisetohisgreatestpossibleheightintalentorsouldevelopmentunlesshehasplentyofmoney;fortounfoldthesoulandtodeveloptalenthemusthavemanythingstouse,andhecannothavethesethingsunlesshehasmoneytobuythemwith.
Mandevelopsinmind,soul,andbodybymakinguseofthings,andsocietyissoorganizedthatmanmusthavemoneyinordertobecomethepossessorofthings;therefore,thebasisofalladvancementformanmustbethescienceofgettingrich.

Theobjectofalllifeisdevelopment;andeverythingthatliveshasaninalienablerighttoallthedevelopmentitiscapableofattaining.
Man’srighttolifemeanshisrighttohavethefreeandunrestricteduseofallthethingswhichmaybenecessarytohisfullestmental,spiritual,andphysicalunfoldment;or,inotherwords,hisrighttoberich.
Inthisbook,Ishallnotspeakofrichesinafigurativeway;tobereallyrichdoesnotmeantobesatisfiedorcontentedwithalittle.Nomanoughttobesatisfiedwithalittleifheiscapableofusingandenjoyingmore.ThepurposeofNatureistheadvancementandunfoldmentoflife;andeverymanshouldhaveallthatcancontributetothepower,elegance,beauty,andrichnessoflife;tobecontentwithlessissinful.
Themanwhoownsallhewantsforthelivingofallthelifeheiscapableoflivingisrich;andnomanwhohas[11]notplentyofmoneycanhaveallhewants.Lifehasadvancedsofar,andbecomesocomplex,thateventhemostordinarymanorwomanrequiresagreatamountofwealthinordertoliveinamannerthatevenapproachescompleteness.Everypersonnaturallywantstobecomeallthatheiscapableofbecoming;thisdesiretorealizeinnatepossibilitiesisinherentinhumannature;wecannothelpwantingtobeallthatwecanbe.Successinlifeisbecomingwhatyouwanttobe;youcanbecomewhatyouwanttobeonlybymakinguseofthings,andyoucanhavethefreeuseofthingsonlyasyoubecomerichenoughtobuythem.Tounderstandthescienceofgettingrichisthereforethemostessentialofallknowledge.
Thereisnothingwronginwantingtogetrich.Thedesireforrichesisreallythedesireforaricher,fuller,andmoreabundantlife;andthatdesireispraiseworthy.Themanwhodoesnot[12]desiretolivemoreabundantlyisabnormal,andsothemanwhodoesnotdesiretohavemoneyenoughtobuyallhewantsisabnormal.
Therearethreemotivesforwhichwelive;weliveforthebody,weliveforthemind,andweliveforthesoul.Nooneoftheseisbetterorholierthantheother;allarealikedesirable,andnooneofthethree—body,mind,orsoul—canlivefullyifeitheroftheothersiscutshortoffulllifeandexpression.Itisnotrightornobletoliveonlyforthesoulanddenymindorbody;anditiswrongtolivefortheintellectanddenybodyandsoul.
Weareallacquaintedwiththeloathsomeconsequencesoflivingforthebodyanddenyingbothmindandsoul;andweseethatreallifemeansthecompleteexpressionofallthatmancangiveforththroughbody,mind,andsoul.Whateverhemaysay,nomancanbereallyhappyorsatisfiedunlesshisbodyislivingfullyineveryfunction,and[13]unlessthesameistrueofhismindandhissoul.Whereverthereisunexpressedpossibility,orfunctionnotperformed,thereisunsatisfieddesire.Desireispossibilityseekingexpression,orfunctionseekingperformance.
Mancannotlivefullyinbodywithoutgoodfood,comfortableclothing,andwarmshelter;andwithoutfreedomfromexcessivetoil.Restandrecreationarealsonecessarytohisphysicallife.
Hecannotlivefullyinmindwithoutbooksandtimetostudythem,withoutopportunityfortravelandobservation,orwithoutintellectualcompanionship.
Tolivefullyinmindhemusthaveintellectualrecreations,andmustsurroundhimselfwithalltheobjectsofartandbeautyheiscapableofusingandappreciating.
Tolivefullyinsoul,manmusthavelove;andloveisdeniedexpressionbypoverty.
Man’shighesthappinessisfoundin[14]thebestowalofbenefitsonthoseheloves;lovefindsitsmostnaturalandspontaneousexpressioningiving.Themanwhohasnothingtogivecannotfillhisplaceasahusbandorfather,asacitizen,orasaman.Itisintheuseofmaterialthingsthatmanfindsfulllifeforhisbody,developshismind,andunfoldshissoul.Itisthereforeofsupremeimportancetohimthatheshouldberich.
Itisperfectlyrightthatyoushoulddesiretoberich;ifyouareanormalmanorwomanyoucannothelpdoingso.ItisperfectlyrightthatyoushouldgiveyourbestattentiontotheScienceofGettingRich,foritisthenoblestandmostnecessaryofallstudies.Ifyouneglectthisstudy,youarederelictinyourdutytoyourself,toGod,andtohumanity;foryoucanrenderGodandhumanitynogreaterservicethantomakethemostofyourself.
CHAPTERII.ThereisaScienceofGettingRich.
ThereisaScienceofgettingrich,anditisanexactscience,likealgebraorarithmetic.Therearecertainlawswhichgoverntheprocessofacquiringriches;oncetheselawsarelearnedandobeyedbyanyman,hewillgetrichwithmathematicalcertainty.
Theownershipofmoneyandpropertycomesasaresultofdoingthingsinacertainway;thosewhodothingsinthisCertainWay,whetheronpurposeoraccidentally,getrich;whilethosewhodonotdothingsinthisCertainWay,nomatterhowhardtheyworkorhowabletheyare,remainpoor.
Itisanaturallawthatlikecausesalwaysproducelikeeffects;and,therefore,anymanorwomanwholearnsto[16]dothingsinthisCertainWaywillinfalliblygetrich.
Thattheabovestatementistrueisshownbythefollowingfacts:

Gettingrichisnotamatterofenvironment,for,ifitwere,allthepeopleincertainneighborhoodswouldbecomewealthy;thepeopleofonecitywouldallberich,whilethoseofothertownswouldallbepoor;ortheinhabitantsofonestatewouldrollinwealth,whilethoseofanadjoiningstatewouldbeinpoverty.
Buteverywhereweseerichandpoorlivingsidebyside,inthesameenvironment,andoftenengagedinthesamevocations.Whentwomenareinthesamelocality,andinthesamebusiness,andonegetsrichwhiletheotherremainspoor,itshowsthatgettingrichisnot,primarily,amatterofenvironment.Someenvironmentsmaybemorefavorablethanothers,butwhentwomeninthesamebusinessareinthesameneighborhood,andonegetsrich[17]whiletheotherfails,itindicatesthatgettingrichistheresultofdoingthingsinaCertainWay.
Andfurther,theabilitytodothingsinthisCertainWayisnotduesolelytothepossessionoftalent,formanypeoplewhohavegreattalentremainpoor,whileotherswhohaveverylittletalentgetrich.
Studyingthepeoplewhohavegotrich,wefindthattheyareanaveragelotinallrespects,havingnogreatertalentsandabilitiesthanothermen.Itisevidentthattheydonotgetrichbecausetheypossesstalentsandabil
