Worryis,sadly,aninevitabilityoflife.Badthingsareboundtohappen,andthenaturalhumanreactionistothinkaboutthenegativeconsequencesthatcouldpotentiallyarise.
However,worryisrarelyproductive--“it’ssomethingwedooverandoveragain,withoutmuchresolution,andit’stypicallyoftheworst-casescenarioofthefuture,”explainsJasonMoser,Ph.D.,anassistantprofessorintheDepartmentofPsychologyatMichiganStateUniversity,whohasconductedstudiesonworry.
”There’salwaysanelementofuncertainty,alwaysanelementofcatastrophe,”hetellsHuffPost.Unlikefear,whichhasamorepin-pointablesource(likeaspideronthewall),peopleworryover“anamorphous,futureuncertainthreat--somethingbadthatmighthappen.”
Whiletheresearchisn’tclearontheextenttowhichpeoplearepredisposedtoworry,itisclearthattherearesomepersonalitytypesthataremorelinkedtoworryingthanothers.Neuroticismseemstobetiedtoworrying,forinstance,asisgeneralintoleranceofuncertainty,Mosersays.Andwhileeveryoneworriesfromtimetotime,itispossibletoworrysomuchthatitstartstohaveanoticeableimpactonyourdailylife.
Butevenifyouareaworrier,you’renotdoomed--thereareanumberofeffectivestrategiesthatworrierscanusetostopthecycle.MoserandChristinePurdon,Ph.D.,alicensedpsychologist,professorandexecutivedirectoroftheCentreforMentalHealthResearchattheUniversityofWaterloo,sharedsomeofthemosteffectivehabitsandstrategiesforsquelchingworry,aswellassomecommontraitssharedbypeoplewhoaren’tboggeddownbyit:
Theyfocusonthepresent.
Perhapsoneofthebiggestdifferencesbetweenworriersandnon-worriersistheabilitytostayinthepresent,andnotgetboggeddownbythingsthathaveyettohappen.Purdoncallsita“worrychain”--theideathatoneworrywillspura“whatif,”whichspursanotherworryandanother“whatif,”andsoon.Non-worriersareabletolookataproblemandrecognizewhatsolutionneedstobeimplemented,“butaworrierisn’tabletogetthatkindofdistance,”sheexplains.“Themindgoesalotfaster.”
”
Forinstance,sayyoursoncomeshomewithabadgrade.Ifyou’reaworrier,youmightthenworrythatthiswillcauseyoursontofailtheclass,whichwillthenimpairhimfromgettingintocollege.However,ifyou’reanon-worrier,you’llrealizethattheimmediateissueathandisjustthatyoursonneedstostudyharderinthisparticularclass--andthat’sthat.“I’mabletosay,‘Heusuallydoesreallywell,he’ssmart,he’sdedicated,he’llbefine;thisisablip,notapattern,’”Purdonsays.Whereaswhenworriersbecomeanxious,their“intentionalfocusnarrowstothreatcues.Theycangetthemselvesveryanxiousveryquickly.”
”
Theypracticemindfulness
Becausestayinginthepresentissofundamentaltosquashingworry,practicingmindfulnesscanhelpyoutosteerfocusawayfromahypotheticalissuethatcoulddevelopdowntheroad.“Itkeepsyouinthehereandnowandithelpsyoubemoreawareofyourthoughts,”Purdonsays.
Andtherapy,suchascognitivebehavioraltherapy(CBT)andacceptanceandcommitmenttherapy,canalsohelpworriersstopthenegativecycle,sincetheyfocus“ontheideaofnotwrestlinganddisconfirmingtheworries,butgettingpeopletofocusontheirlifeandvaluesandfocusonthepresentmomentsotheycanmakedecisions,”Moseradds.
Theirbrainsactuallyfunctiondifferentlyinaworry-inducingevent
MoserrecentlyhadastudycomeoutintheJournalofAbnormalPsychology,showingthatthebrainsofworriersandnon-worriersactuallyworkdifferentlyinastressfulevent.Forthestudy,Moserandhiscolleagueshad71femalestudyparticipantsanswersurveysthatindicatedwhethertheyweregenerallypositivethinkersornegativethinkers/worriers.Then,theparticipantslookedatnegativeimages--suchasawomanhavingaknifeheldtoherthroatbyamaskedman--astheirbrainactivitywasmonitoredandrecorded.
Moserfoundthatthebrainsofthepositivethinkerswerelessactivethanthoseofthenegativethinkers/worriers.Infact,“theworriersactuallyshowedaparadoxicalbackfiringeffectintheirbrainswhenaskedtodecreasetheirnegativeemotions,”heexplainedinastatement.“Thissuggeststheyhaveareallyhardtimeputtingapositivespinondifficultsituationsandactuallymaketheirnegativeemotionsworseevenwhentheyareaskedtothinkpositively.”
”
They’remorewillingtotakechances
Whileworriershaveahardtimemakingdecisions--theytakealongtimebecausetheycanbecomecrippledbyallthepotentialnegativeoutcomes--non-worriersaremorewillingtotestoutsolutionstoaproblemevenifabadoutcomeispossible,Mosersays.Inthatsamevein,non-worriersarealsomoreflexibleinthewaytheythinkaboutthings,sotheydon’tgetstuckinanegativethinkingrut.
Theyhaveasenseofperspective
Non-worriersareabletodistancethemselvesfromasituationinordertogainperspective.However,worrierscanincreasetheirperspective,Moserexplains.Onemethodfordoingthisisthinkingofalltheworstpossiblescenarios,andthenevaluatinghowlikelyeachofthemistoreallyhappen.Forexample:
Ifaworrierisconcernedaboutlosingherjob,shemayjumptotheworst-casescenario,whichisthatshewillenduplivingunderabridge,homelessandalone.ButMosersaysthattalkingaworrierthroughascenariolikethishelpsherunderstandhowunlikelythatoutcomeistohappen.
Mosersuggestsanothersimplestrategytogainperspective:
Usingyourownnameinsteadof“I”whenreferringtoyouremotions.Forinstance,saying“I’mgoingtofail”isharshanddoesn’tallowanydistancebetweenyouandthethingyou’reworriedabout.But“ifyoutalkaboutyourselfinthethirdperson,youcantakebetterperspective,”Mosersays.
Theygettotherootoftheirworry
Theproblemwithworryingisthatitcanspinoutofcontroluntilthethingyou’reworriedaboutis10stepsremovedfromyourimmediateissue.That’swhyit’ssoimportanttofigureoutwhattherealproblemisinordertostoptheworrycycle.
”WhenIworkwithworriers,Itrytoworkonthemwithproblemidentification,andtohelpthembecomfortabledoingthat,”Purdonsays.“Yes,therearesomeproblemsthatcouldleadtosomethingelse,but[let’s]notworryaboutthatrightnowbecauseit’snothappeningrightnow.”
”
It’simportanttomovefromproblem-generation,whichiswhatworriersarepronetodo,toproblem-solving.“Worriersthinkwhatthey’redoingisconstructive--thatbyanticipating[thefutureproblems],it’shelpfulinsomeway,”Purdonsays.“It’sreasonable,tosomeextent,todothat,buttheycan’tstopthemselvesoncetheygetstarted.”
”
Theydon’tstopworrying--theyjustdesignatetimeforit
”Oneofthereasonswhypeopleengagetheirworryistheythink,‘ThisisanissueImustsortoutnow,Ihavetoanticipateandplanagainsttheseoutcomes.’Itgrabsattentionoffwhattheyneedtobeattendingto,whetheritbejob,spouse,kids,whatever,”Purdonexplains.So,sherecommendsusingastrategycalledthe“worrychair.”Itworkslikethis--reservea15-minutetimeduringthedaywhereyoucanjustthinkandponderoveryourworriesonyourown.Don’tworryoutsidethose15minutes,andmakesurethatyou’respendingyourworrysessioninthesamespot(hencetheterm“worrychair”!
)eachday.
