1.DecidetoLearn:
Thefirstthingtodoistodecidethatyouwanttousethismethod,andthenfollowthroughwiththetechniquesforthreemonths.Themethodisnotdifficult;infactitissurprisinglyeasy,butitdoesrequireconsistentpersistenceandadecisiontosticktoittotheend.
Readoverthefollowingnotes,andthendecideifyouwishtouseit.Thedecisionisyours.Makeyourchoice.
2.SetAsideThreeMonths:
Theoptimumperiodisninetycontinuousdays.Youneedonlyspendfivetofifteenminutesaday,preferablybrokenintotwoorthreesessionsadayforonlytwotofourminuteseach.Usingthismethodwillnottakemuchtimefromyourotherdutiesorrelaxationtime.
3.TheGoalisFluency:
Thismethodwillhelpyoutobecomefluentinthelanguage."Fluency"meansthatyouwillbeabletothinkandtooperateinthelanguage.Itdoesnotmeanthatyouwillhaveaverybigvocabulary,atfirst,butitwillgiveyouthetoolstobuildyourvocabularyfromwithinthelanguage,asyoudid(andstilldo)inyourfirstlanguage.
4.UseLearningPathsAlreadyEstablishedinYourBrain:
Althoughyouarenolongeraninfant(theageyouwerewhenyoulearnedhowtotalk),youcantakeadvantageofthewaysoflearningthatworkedwhenyoulearnedyourfirstlanguage,usingsomepsychologicaltricksandimaginationnowtoyouradvantage.Theunderlyingpsychologicaltricktothismethodisto"learnlikeababylearnstotalk."
5.RecallYourFirstLanguage:
Howcanyoutakeadvantagenowofthewayyoulearnedhowtotalkwhenyouwereababy?
Thewayyoulearnedhowtotalkwasdifferentinmanyrespectsfromthewayyoulearnedasecondlanguage,especiallyifyoulearnedasecondlanguageinschool.Yetourbrainandnervoussystemaredesignedwelltolearningourfirstlanguageacertainway.Itseemsoddthatwewouldlearnasecondlanguagewithouttakingadvantageofthelearningpathsthatweresetupinsideuswhenwefirstlearnedhowtotalk.

6.ImitationoftheFirst:
Youcannotgobackintime,andyouwillneverbeoneortwoyearsoldagain,soyoucannotpreciselyduplicatethewayyoulearnedhowtotalk.Whileyoucannotduplicate,however,youcanimitate.Thismethodallowsyoutotakeadvantageofpsychologicalevidencethatindicateseveryexperienceyouhaveinyourlifeisstoredunconsciouslysomewhereinyourbrain.Sometimesitcanberecalledonlybyhypnosis.Whatyouwanttorecallaretheinternallearningmethodsyouusedwhenyoufirstlearnedtotalk.
7.APsychologicalMethod:
Thismethodusesthelearningpathwaysthatweresetupinyourbrainasyoulearnedhowtotalkandcallsthembackintousetohelpyoulearnanotherlanguage.Thislearningcapacityhasaphysiologicalbasisinourgeneticmake-upthathasdevelopedovermillionsofyearsofselectionleadingtoaprimateanimalhavingthecapacitytodevelopalanguage.
8.YouHaveSomethingtoUnlearn:
Itmightsurpriseyoutodiscoverthatwhenyoulearnedhowtotalkyouwerelearningwhatnottosayasmuchaswhattosay.Whenpeoplearoundyourespondedpositivelytosomesoundsyoumadeandnottoothers,theacceptablesoundswerereinforcedinyourmind.Youwerelearningwhatnottosay.Outofalltherandomorexperimentalnoisesyoumadeasababy,youlearnedthatsomesoundswerenotacceptable,orperhapsnotuseful.Nowthatyouareabouttolearnanotherlanguage,youwillbelearningtosaythings,ortomakenoisesthatyouhadlearnednottosayornottomakebefore.
Tobeginwith,itwillhelpyouifyourecognizethatyouwillhavetounlearnsomeofthetaboos(againstcertainsounds)thatyouhavelearnedbefore.Thisissomethingliketheridgesandgroovesonarecord.Theyarethereverseimageofeachother,andthemovementoftherecordplayerneedlemovesupanddowninresponsetotheupanddownvariationsoftheridgesandgrooves.Sinceyoulearnedwhatsoundsnottosaywhenyoulearnedtotalk,foryoutolearnanotherlanguagenow,youwillhavetolearntomakesoundsthatyouhadlearnedearlierthatyoushouldnotmake.
9.Pronunciation;StartAsaBaby:
Tobeginlearninghowtounlearnthesoundsnottosay,startbymakingallkindsofrandomnoiseswithyourmouth.Letallthosesoundsincludethosethatyoumightthinkasrude,vulgar,queer,orunpleasant.(Includeburps,pops,fizzes,squeaksandgrunts).
10.UseYourShower:
Whenyoubeginthisexercise,youmayfeelembarrassed.Thisisnotsurprisingbecauseyouwillbeengaginginbehaviourthatyoulearned(unconsciouslyandintuitivelyasachild)wasunacceptablebehaviour.Thesolutiontothisproblemis,atthebeginning,topracticealone(egintheshoweroronasolitarytrek),untilyoucanallowyourselftomakesuchsoundswithinthehearingofotherpersons.
11.TheSociolinguisticFunctionofLaughter:
Whenyoumakesomeofthesesounds,youmaywishtogiggleorlaugh.Thatisanimportantindicator.Sociologistshavefoundthatlaughterisasocialtensionreducingbehaviour.Yourlaughterorgigglingisameanstoreducetheembarrassment.Itisalsoasociologicalindicatorthatrevealsyourembarrassment.
12.BecomeIndifferenttoMakingWeirdNoises:
So,keeppractisingaloneuntilyounolongerfeelaneedtolaugh.Thenpracticewithacloseandtrustedfriend,continuinguntilagainyouhavenoneedtogiggle.Finally,youcantrydoingitwithanacquaintanceorcolleaguethatisnotquitesocloseandtrustedfriend.Youmaywishtoexplainwhyyouaremakingthosenoises,asyourfriendmightbesurprisedthatwhatiscomingoutofyourmoutharenotsoundsthatmakesense.Yourobjectiveistobeabletomakestrangesoundswithoutfeelingembarrassed.
Itmaycomeasasurprisetolearnthatifyouarephysicallyabletospeakinanyonehumanlanguage,thenyouarephysicallycapableofmakingallthesoundsinanylanguage.

13.DoNotAimforaLargeVocabulary:
Rememberthatfluencydoesnotimplyalevelofcomprehensionandskillequivalenttowhatyouhavenowwithyourfirstlanguage.Fluencymeansanabilitytooperate,communicate,orsociallyinteractinalanguage.Yourgoalshouldbebytheendofthreemonthsavocabularyofonlythreehundredwords,butwordsthatyoucanuseineverydaycontexttogetwhetyouwantandmakeyourselfunderstood.Youwantoperationalfluency,notalargebutawkwardvocabulary.
14.MaximumFive,MinimumOneWordDaily:
Setyourselfagoaloflearningatleastonewordadayforninetydays.Youmustnotmissasingleday.Sinceyoumusthaveminimumoffiveminuteseverydayforyournewlanguage,thisdoesnotsoundverydifficult.Theimportanthurdleistobewareofforgettingyourgoalandlettingadaypasswithoutlearninganewword.
Theupperlimitofwordstolearnanydayisfive.Youmaybetemptedatfirsttolearnlongerlistsofvocabulary,buttakeiteasy.Asthethreemonthscontinue,youmightnotfeelsoeager;thosearethetimeswhenyouhavetobesuretolearnatleastonewordeachday.
15.ChooseVocabularyYouCanImmediatelyUse:
Whenyoufirstlearnedhowtotalk,thewordsyoulearnedwereexistential;youlearnedthemtousethem,nottomemorizethem.
Eachdaychooseawordtolearnaccordingtowhatyouaredoingatthetime.Forexample,youmaybethirsty;yourgoalthenistolearnthewords,"Iwantwater."Thatisthreewords.Youcanbringituptothedailymaximumoffivewordsbyalsofindingouthowtosay"Givemewater."Thefollowingday,youmaybeatthetableandfeelaneedforsalt.Good!
Youalreadyknowfivewords:
"give,me,want,I,water."Usetheonesyoualreadyknow,andlearnhowtosay,"Iwantsalt,"and"Givemesalt."
Rememberthat,onthesecondday,youhavelearnedonlyoneword,butyouhavelearneditinthecontextofusingitwiththewordsthatyoualreadyknow.
Practicewordsandphrasesyouhavealreadylearnedonpreviousdays.Donotforgetthem.Keepthegoaloffluencyalwaysinmindwhenyouselecteachnewword;learnhowtouseitandoperatewithit.
16.TheBasicDailyVocabulary:
Whatissometimesmiss-calleda"kitchenvocabulary,"isalistoftwotothreehundredwordsthatareusedforeightytoninetypercentofourdailyconversation,andexcludingallprofessionalandspecialistwordsthatarenotusedbyeverybodyinthesociety.Ifyoukeepchoosingyourwordsthiswayeachday(existentially),thenbytheendofthreemonthsyourvocabularywillbeveryclosetothe"kitchenvocabulary"forthatlanguage.
17.Maximum15,Minimum5MinutesDaily:
