1Despiteallthecurrentfussandbotherabouttheextraordinarynumberofordinaryilliterateswhooverpopulateourschools,smallattentionhasbeengiventoanotherkindofilliterate,anilliteratewhoseplightis,inmanyways,moreimportant,becauseheismoreinfluential.Thisilliteratemay,asoftenasnot,beauniversitypresident,butheistypicallya.,asuccessfulprofessorandtextbookauthor.ThepersontowhomIreferisthestraight-Ailliterate,andthefollowingiswritteninanattempttogivehimequaltimewithhiswidelypublicizedcounterpart.
