目前人们比较关注的自然界中的神迷现象大致包括UFO(UnidentifiedFlyingObject,不明飞行物,俗称飞碟、外星人,据说的麦田圈CropCircle)①,响沙②,据说的自然界闪电打雷时的录像现象,等等。

课文“TheMonsterofLakeTianchi”记述了白山天池怪兽之谜。
天池湖面海拔2189米,水深373米,水面积9.82平方公里,积水20亿立方米,年平均气温为-7.3℃,年积雪日数达到258天,积雪最深达到3米,是中国最高最大最冷的高山湖泊。
天池地处高山之颠,自然环境恶劣,四周群蜂围拱,草木不生;水中有机质及浮生物极少,没有可供大型动物生存的食物。
但是近百年来,“天池怪兽”,一直是天池的奇怪现象,被传说得沸沸扬扬、神乎其神:
留下了许多悬念,令人费解。
