Whenwearefacedwithachallenge,weusuallyhavetwochoices.Wecantrytobeatitoff,orwecandecidethatthethingpresentingthechallengeisn’tworththetroubleandcallitquits.Althoughtherearecertainlytimeswhencallingitquitsistherightthingtodo,inmostcasesallthatisneedediscommitmentandcommunication.
Whenwearecommittedtosomething,itmeansthatnomatterhowpainfulorhowuncomfortablesomethingis,wewillalwayschoosetofaceitandworkitthroughinsteadofrunningawayfromit.Communicationismakingaspacefordiscussionandtalkingabouthowyoufeelasopposedtojustsayingwhattheotherpersondidwrong.Ifyoucansaytoafriend,“Igotmyfeelingshurt,”ratherthan“Youhurtmyfeelings,”youaregoingtobeabletosolvetheproblemmuchfaster.

Ihappenedtobeoneofthepeopleonthewaytoworkthatmorning.Iwentfromsubwaylinetosubwaylineonlytofindthatmostservicehadstopped.Aftermakingmywaythroughcrowdsofpeople,Ifinallyfoundasubwaylinethatwasoperating.Unfortunately,thereweresomanypeoplewaitingtoboardthesubwaythatIcouldnotevengetdownthestairstotheplatform.SoItookthetraingoingintheoppositedirection,andthenswitchbacktothedowntowntrain.Finally,afterwhatseemedlikeanforever,thetrainreachedmystop.ThenIhadtowalkseveralblocksintheincreasinglyheavyrain.WhenIfinallygottomyoffice,Iwaswetthrough,exhaustedanddiscouraged.
