Abstract
Withthecontinualreformoflanguageteachingandlearningmethods,teachersarerequiredtoorganizetheclassesinEnglishandcreateEnglish–learningenvironments.However,withthelimitationofstudents’vocabulary,teachershavetosimplifytheirteachinglanguagewiththehelpofbodylanguageintheteachingofEnglish.Moreover,researchesshowthatbodylanguageplaysagreatpartininterpersonalcommunicationandEnglishteaching.InordertoappealEnglishteacherstotakefulladvantageofthebodylanguageinEnglishteaching,theauthorpresentsthispapertoexplaintheimportanceofbodylanguageinEnglishteaching,throughdiscussingthetypesandthespecificfunctionsofbodylanguagefrequentlyemployedintheprocessofEnglishteaching.ShealsopresentsherteachingexperienceandasurveyreporttosupportherviewpointthattheappropriateapplicationofbodylanguagebyEnglishteacherinmiddleschoolcanimproveteachingefficiencygreatly.

摘要
随着语言教与学方法的不断改革,要求教师进行英语教学并创造出英语学习的环境,然而,由于学生词汇量的限制,教师必须借用肢体语言来简化课堂用语。
并且研究发现肢体语言在人际交往和英语教学中都起着重大的作用。
为了呼吁英语教师在教学中充分发挥肢体语言的作用,该论文通过对英语教学中经常用到的肢体语言的种类及其在具体教学中的作用进行了分析和调研,从而说明肢体语言的重要性,同时作者结合自己的教学经验来说明在中学英语课堂中适当的应运肢体语言能够很好的提高教学效率。

1.Introduction
Atpresent,almosteveryoneknowsthatEnglishlearningbecomesmoreandmoreimportanttothestudents.Asweallknow,theclassroomteachingisoneofthemostimportantwaysforthestudentslearnEnglish.AsfarastheEnglishteachinginmiddleschoolisconcerned,teachersneedtoreformtheteachingmethodstoarousethestudents’interestandhelpthemtolearnbetter.Therearemanyusefulandpropermethodstogetthegoal.However,oneofthemostimportantwaysistousebodylanguage,becauseEnglishteachinginmiddleschoolfocusesoncommunicationactivitiesatpresent.Dullanddrycommunicationwillmakestudentsproduceunpleasantfeelings.Theydonotliketheusual,unchangingteachingandlearningmethods.
Bodylanguageistheprocessofcommunicatingwhatyouarefeelingorthinkingbythewayyouplaceandmoveyourbodyratherthanbywords.Itcomesbeforeverballanguage,anditistheprimaryformofhumancommunication.Itreferstothepatternsoffacialexpression,eyecontactthatpeopleusetoexpresstheirattitudesandfeelingstocommunicate.Fen.Lafle.Anglesoncesaid:
“onceitwaslost,ababycouldn’thavegrownintoanormalperson.”(Liuyongfa&liuxuan’en,1997)Researchescarriedoutbymostlinguistsrevealingthatinformationconveyedbybodylanguageaccountsfor65%inface-to-facecommunicationwhileverbalmeansonlytakesup35%.Inschooleducation,bodylanguageplaysapositiveroleinarousestudents’interestandcreateEnglishlearningenvironmentandsoon.Aresearchreportedthat82%ofthenotionsusedinclassbyteachersarenonverbal,whileonly18%areverbal.(shenminxian,1999)However,EnglishteachersinChinastillgivetheiremphasisonthetraditionalteachingmeans,suchastheverballanguageandwrittenlanguagebuttheyneglecttheimportanceofbodylanguageinteaching.Therefore,inEnglishclass,theteachersshouldpayenoughattentiontobodylanguageandproperlyuseit.Becausenotonlyitisagoodtooltocommunicatewithothersandexpressoneself,butitcanhelptheteachersachieveahigherteachinggoalandfurthermutualunderstandingbetweentheteachersandthestudents.
2.TheImportanceofusingbodylanguageinEnglishteaching
Withthedevelopmentofoursociety,Englishhasbecomemoreandmoreimportant.Asamatteroffact,Englishteachinghasbecomeakeypartoftheschooleducation,withtheEnglishteachingmethodsreform,EnglishteachersarerequiredtoorganizetheteachingprocessinEnglish,especiallytheclassinmiddleschool.However,studentsinthemiddleschoolcan'tspeakverywell;neithercantheyunderstandwhytheyshouldusedifferenttonesindifferenttimeorsituation;theirvocabularyandexpressiveabilityarelimitedtoo.TheselimitationsmakeitdifficulttorealizetheCommunicatingEnglishintheclasses,soaccordingtothestudents'presentlevelandpracticalsituation,bodylanguageisrequired.
2.1TotalPhysicalResponseandbodylanguage
TotalPhysicalResponse(TPR)isalanguageteachingmethodbuiltaroundthecoordinationofspeechandaction;itattemptstoteachlanguagethroughphysicalactivity.ThemainadvocatorisafamousAmericanpsychologist,JamesAsher,whoviewslanguagelearningprocessisjustlikethemothertonguelearningprocessbychildren.Theteachershouldcreatearelaxedandcomfortableenvironmentforlearners.Becauseanxietyisquitepossiblytheaffectivefactorthatmostpervasivelyobstructsthelearningprocess.Itisassociatedwithnegativefeelingssuchasuneasiness,self-doubt,apprehensionandtension,whenanxietyispresentintheclassroom,thereisadonw-spiriallingaffect(Shenminxian,1999).Anxietymakesusnervousandafraidandthuscontributestopoorperformance;thisinturncreatesmoreanxietyandanevenworseperformance.Inclassroom,theteacheruseavividandspecificbodymovements,facialexpressionsorgestures,namelybodylanguagewhichreducesthelearningpressureandalsoincreasesthelearninginterest.Asaresult,studentscaneasilyunderstandwhattheteachersays.ThislanguagelearningmethodisthepracticalreflectionandextensionofAffective-HumanismApproachwhichemphasizestheimportanceofthelearners’psychologicalfactorsinlanguagelearning.SomepopularteachingmethodssuchasCommunicativeLanguageLearning,theNaturalApproachandTask-basedApproachareinfluencedbyTPR.(Liushulin,Liuchunyun&Liuyuewei,2004)BodylanguageisthekeyinTPR.ItshouldbewidelyusedinTPRclassroom.
2.2TheadvantagesofusingbodylanguageinEnglishteaching
Asvocallanguage’svitalcomplement,bodylanguagehasmanyadvantagesinEnglishteaching.Atthispart,theauthorwilldiscussseveralmainadvantagesofbodylanguagefromteachersandstudentsaspectsseparately.
2.2.1Fromteacher’saspect
Ifaclassiscomparedtoadrama,then,teachesarethedirectorsofthisdrama.Asateacheroneshouldhashisownteachingstyleandbegoodatdesigninghisbodylanguageinteaching,becausetheuseofbodylanguageinteachingprocessisimportant.
First,theuseofbodylanguagecanhelpteachersexpressthemselvesbetterandunderstandstudentsclearly.Bodylanguagecanbevocallanguage’svitalcomplement,inexpressingsomesubtleideas;bodylanguagecanbeagoodhelper.Itcanmaketheabstractthingsbecomespecific,sothestudentscanunderstandtheabstractthingseasily.
Second,theuseofbodylanguagecanhelpteacherssimplifytheknowledgeandcreateEnglishenvironment.Asweallknow,environmentisthekeyfactorforustolearnEnglishwell,soteachersshouldadoptteachingmethodsthatuseEnglishtoteachstudentsduringtheirteachingprocess.StudentsalsoneedtouseEnglishatclassinordertolearnbetter.Butformiddleschoolstudentstheirvocabularyislimited,moreover,youngpupilshavelimitedabilitytolearnwordsandexpressionsthroughconceptualexplanations.WhenteachersdescribeorexplainwordsorphrasesinEnglish,itisdifficultforthemtounderstand.Astimegoeson,theywillloseinterestinlearningEnglish.Butwiththehelpofbodylanguage,thecomplexwordscanbesimplified.Asimplemotion,anexpressionwillmakeiteasytounderstand.Intheend,studentscanacceptnewknowledgeinahappyatmosphere.
2.2.2Fromstudent’saspect
Infact,studentsaretherealmajorcharactersintheteachingprocess;everythingteachersdidistocreateagoodlearningenvironmentforstudents,sotheuseofbodylanguagemustbenefitstudents.Thefollowingaretheadvantages.
Firstly,theuseofbodylanguagecanreducestudents’pressureandcreateastress-freelearningatmosphere.Withthehelpofbodylanguage,theywouldfullofcourageandconfidenceandwithoutnervousanymore.Soabsolutelytheywillopenmouthtospeakandtakepartintheactivitylikegroup-workfullofenthusiasm.
Secondlytheuseofbodylanguagecanhelpstudentskeepfirmlyinmindtheknowledgeobtainedinclass,especiallywhenteachingsomekeypoints,teacherscanemphasizeitbyraisinghisvoiceandreachingouthisfingers.Thatwillusuallygivestudentsadeepimpression
Thirdly,theuseofbodylanguagecanstirstudents’interestgreatly.Classroomteachingisthemajormethodforstudentstoobtainknowledge.Theapplicationofbodylanguagecandirectlyinfluencetheteachingeffect(shenminxian,1999).Iftheyareinterestedinthecontents,theywouldpaymuchattentiontoit.Thatmeanstheyhavepassiontolearn.Asweallknowinterestisthebestteacher,onecannotlearnaforeignlanguagewellwithoutbeinginterest.Sometimes,interestismoreimportantthanintelligenceandlanguageaptitude.Ifstudentsaredeeplyattractedbytheteachersbehavior.That’sagoodbeginning.Astheoldsayinggoes,agoodbeginningmeansahalfofsuccess.Atlast,asuccessfullessonwillbelead.
BasedontheaboveanalysiswecanlearnthattheuseofbodylanguageisnecessaryandpracticalatEnglishteachinginmiddleschools.
