Sincemenrevivehispastexperiencebecauseoftheinterestaddedtowhatwouldotherwisebetheemptinessofpresentleisure,theprimitivelifeofmemoryisoneoffancyandimagination,ratherthanofaccuraterecollection.Afterall,itisthestory,thedrama,whichcounts.Onlythoseincidentsareselectedwhichhaveapresentemotionalvalue,tointensifythepresenttaleasitisrehearsedinimaginationortoldtoanadmiringlistener.Whatdoesnotaddtothethrillofcombatorcontributetothegoalofsuccessorfailureisdropped.Incidentsarerearrangedtilltheyfitintothetemperofthetale.Thusearlymanwhenlefttohimself,whennotactuallyengagedinthestruggleforexistence,livedinaworldofmemorieswhichwasaworldofsuggestions.Asuggestiondiffersfromarecollectioninthatnoattemptismadetotestitscorrectness.Itscorrectnessismatterofrelativeindifference.Thecloudsuggestsacameloraman’sface.Itcouldnotsuggestthesethingsunlesssometimetherehadbeenanactual,literalexperienceofcamelandface.Butthereallikenessisofnoaccount.Themainthingistheemotionalinterestintracingthecamelorfollowingthefortunesofthefaceasitformsanddissolves.
Studentsoftheprimitivehistoryofmankindtelloftheenormouspartplayedbyanimaltales,mythsandcults.Sometimesamysteryismadeoutofthishistoricalfact,asifitindicatedthatprimitivemanwasmovedbyadifferentpsychologyfromthatwhichnowanimateshumanity.Buttheexplanationis,Ithink,simple.Untilagricultureandthehigherindustrialartsweredeveloped,longperiodsofemptyleisurealternatedwithcomparativelyshortperiodsofenergyputforthtosecurefoodorsafetyfromattack.Becauseofourownhabits,wetendtothinkofpeopleasbusyoroccupied,ifnotwithdoingatleastwiththinkingandplanning.Butthenmenwerebusyonlywhenengagedinthehuntorfishingorfightingexpedition.Yetthemindwhenawakemusthavesomefilling;itcannotremainliterallyvacantbecausethebodyisidle.Andwhatthoughtsshouldcrowdintothehumanmindexceptexperienceswithanimals,experiencestransformedundertheinfluenceofdramaticinteresttomakemorevividandcoherentandeventstypicalofthechase?
Asmaninfancydramaticallyrelivedtheinterestingpartsoftheiractuallives,animalsinevitablybecamethemselvesdramatized.
Theyweretruedramatispersonaandassuchassumedthetraitsofpersons.Theytoohaddesires,hopesandfears,alifeofaffections,lovesandhates,triumphsanddefeats.Moreover,sincetheywereessentialtothesupportofthecommunity,theiractivitiesandsufferingmadethem,intheimaginationwhichdramaticallyrevivedthepast,truesharersinthelifeofthecommunity.Althoughtheywerehunted,yettheypermittedthemselvesafteralltobecaught,andhencetheywerefriendsandallies.Theydevotethemselves,quiteliterally,tothesustenanceandwell-beingofthecommunitygrouptowhichtheybelonged.Thuswereproducednotmerelythemultitudeoftalesandlegendsdwellingaffectionatelyupontheactivitiesandfeaturesofanimals,butalsothoseelaborateritesandcultswhichmadeanimalsancestors,heroes,tribalfigure-headsanddivinities.
Totreattheearlybeliefsandtraditionsofmankindasiftheywereattemptsatscientificexplanationoftheworld,onlyerroneousandabsurdattempts,isthustobeguiltyofagreatmistake.Thematerialoutofwhichphilosophyfinallyemergesisirrelevanttoscienceandexplanation.Itisfigurative,symbolicofearsandhopes,madeofimaginationsandsuggestions,notsignificantofaworldofobjectivefactintellectuallyconfronted.Itispoetryanddrama,ratherthanscience,andisapartfromscientifictruthandfalsity,rationalityorabsurdityoffactinthesamewayinwhichpoetryisindependentofthesethings.
Thesystematicandobligatorynatureofsuchdoctrinesishastenedandconfirmedthroughconquestsandpoliticalconsolidation.Astheareaofgovernmentisextended,thereisadefinitemotiveforsystematizingandunifyingbeliefsoncefreeandfloating.Asidefromnaturalaccommodationandassimilationspringingfromthefactofintercourseandtheneedsofcommonunderstanding,thereisoftenpoliticalnecessitywhichleadstherulertocentralizetraditionsandbeliefsinordertoextendandstrengthenhisprestigeandauthority.

这样看来,人类追想过去的经验,不过是因为往事的兴味可以消遣现在闲暇时候的无聊。
因为如此,所以最初的追想大都是自由的想象,未必是精确的追忆。
要紧的只是这个故事要说得圆满,或这出戏文要唱得有趣。
所有选择材料就不免有点偏重。
中选的都是那些可以动听,可以增加感情作用的情节。
那些不能增长兴趣无关成败的情节,便都删去了。
那些入选的情节,也须依着这个故事的性质,随意移前搬后,并不依照实事的次序。
所以我们可以说,人类闲暇无事时住在一种追想的世界里,这种追想的世界其实只是一种暗示的世界(aworldofsuggestions)。
暗示与追忆不同,因为暗示从不想考证他自己的正确与否。
正确不正确,他毫不在意。
譬如天上一片云,使人想起一只骆驼或一个人面的暗示。
这个人固然先曾见过真的人面或真的骆驼。
但这片云究竟有几分像那真骆驼或真人面,他可不在意。
他只顾他感情上的兴趣,眼望着那天上骆驼的臃肿和那云中人面的出没。
研究初民历史的学者都知道初民社会里有许多禽兽的故事与禽兽的神话。
有人说,这可证明初民另有一种心理,与现在人类的心理绝不同。
其实不然。
当农事与工业未发达之先,初民求食或避害的活动,每年不过占几个很短的时期,往往有很多的闲空时期。
我们过惯了这种忙碌的现代生活,往往悬想初民的社会也必是终年穷忙的,要不忙着做活,也必忙着做计划。
其实初民只有渔猎或战争的时候是忙的,剩下无事的时候,心里空荡荡的怪不好过,总得寻点东西装满这空闲的时间。
他们的经验可是很有限的,除了捉鱼、打猎得来的禽兽知识,还有什么别的材料可以供他们的消遣呢?
因此初民社会里遂发生许多禽兽的神话,用他们平日最有趣的生活点缀起来,牛魔、豹怪便都变成戏中的人物了!
这些禽兽在神话里都带着人的品行;他们也会有情欲希望,也会有爱情,也会有仇恨,也会有哀乐喜惧,也会有胜败。
况且在初民社会里,这些禽兽都可算是社会的分子,因为若没有他们,社会不但缺乏食料,并且连生活的趣味都减少了。
打猎的人尽管赶打野兽,但捉到之后,他们究竟是好朋友,他们的血肉养活了大家的生命。
所以后来不但产生了许多叙述禽兽的生活的故事与神话,并且还产生了许多繁复的宗教仪式,内中往往有把禽兽当作祖宗,当作好汉,当作神灵的。
这样看来,我们若以为古代的信仰与传说,虽多错误与荒谬,究竟还是古人想用科学来解释宇宙的结果——这是大错的。
哲学的原始材料是既不关“科学”,又不关“解释”的。
他只是寓言的,想象的,暗示的,和那客观的事实世界却不想干。
我们可叫他做诗歌,可叫他做戏曲,但决不是科学;他决不会发生科学上所谓的“真与假”,“有理与无稽”的问题,因为诗歌戏曲是不会发生这种问题的。
后来民族发展,政治的势力越扩充,这种教条的正统与权威也格外巩固。
政权的领域扩大时,凡从前自由活动的信仰皆有调和与同化,自不用说了。
最重要的是那政治上的需要,君主为增加威望保持势力起见,不得不把各民族的信仰与传说都集中统一起来。
