earlyintheseventeenthcentury,agroupofpeoplecalledpilgrimswantedtoreformandpurifyenglandchurches.Asaresultoftheirefforts,theywerepersecuted.sotheysailedtonetherland,alsoknownasholland,seekingreligiousfreedom.Aftertwelveyearsinhollandwiththestruggletomakealivingandfeltthreatenedbythepermissivedarksociety,thepilgrimsdecidedtoseekarefugeinaplacewhichtheycreatedasocietytomatchtheirreligioussocieties.Inexchangeforsevenyearsofwork,thepuritanspersuadedtheLondonstockcompanytofinancetheirjourneytothenewworld.
Inseptember1620,ahundredandtwopassengerssetsailfromplymouthenglandonashipcalledthemayflower.Thejourneytook65daysandwasfilledwithmuchdifficulty.badstormsweakenedtheshipandcausedmanyleaks.manypassengerswerecoldanddeadformuchofthejourneyandotherswereconcernedthattheywouldn’tevensurvive.Thoughmanyweresickandonepersondied,theydidmakeit.

besidessurvival,thepuritanswereconcernedthatthenativeAmericanIndianswouldattackthem.Totheirsurprise,AnIndiannamedsamsitewalkedrightintotheircolonyandwelcomedtotheminbrokenenglish.samsitewasfromIndiantribemaineandhepickedupafewenglishwordsfromthefishermenwhocameintotheirharborsthere.hetoldthemalsoofanotherIndiannamedsquanto,anativeofthatplace,whohadbeentoenglandandcouldspeakbetterenglishthanhe.Thepilgrimsusedthisopportunitytonegotiatethepeacetreatyandtoestablishtradingrelations.squanto’simportancetothepilgrimswasenormousanditcanbesaidthattheywouldnotsurvivewithouthishelp.Itwassquantowhotaughtthepilgrimshowtotapthemapletreesforsap,howtoplantIndiancornandothercrops,andhowtotellwhichplantswerepoisonousandwhichcouldbeusedasmedicine.Asaresult,theyhadabountifulharvestthatprovidedfoodforthecomingwinter.Thepilgrimshadmuchtocelebratealthoughnearlyhalfoftheirpeopledied.Theyhadsuccessfullybuilthomesinthewildness,raisedenoughcropstokeepthemaliveduringthelongcomingwinterandtheywereinpeacewiththeirIndianneighbors.Itwastimetogivethanks.
Thepilgrimgovernorwilliambradfordforeclaimedthedaythanksgivingtogodforhelpingthemsurviveinthebrutewinter.TheyinvitedsquantoandotherIndianstojointheminthecelebration.Theirchiefmassasoitand90bravescametothecelebrationswhichlastedforthreedays.Twoyearslater,theircoloniessufferedthedroughtandthegovernorbradfordorderedthedayasFastingandprayer.Itwasreportedthatsoonafteritwouldbegintorain.Tocelebratethegod’sanswertoprayer,november29wasclaimedtheDayofThanksgiving.ThisdayisbelievedtobethebeginningofthepresentdayThanksgivingDaywhichisheldonthefourthThursdayofnovember.Thecustomofanannualthanksgivingcelebrationheldafterharvestcontinued.butitbecameanationalobservanceunderthepresidentsgeorgewashingtonin1789andAbrahamLincolnin1863.onlyafterLincolndidthanksgivingbecomeanannualobservance.
Thanksgivingweekendhasbecomeoneofthebusiesttravelperiodsoftheyearbecauseitisafourtofivedayvacationsformanyschoolsandsomebusinesses.Ithasalsobecomethebeginningofchristmasbuyingseason.manypeopletodayobservetheholidaybywatchingprofessionalfootballgames,thanksgivingTVprogramsandthemessithanksgivingparadeheldinnewYorkcity.Thanksgivingisthetimewhenthefamiliesgatherandenjoythetimetogether.manyfamiliesgivethankstogodforhisgoodnessandfaithfulnesstothem.Regardlessofone’sreligiousbelieves,mostfamilieswillshareabigmealtogetherofturkey,stuffy,mashedpotatoeswithgravy,sweetpotatoes,cranberrysauce,sweetcornandpumpkinpie.Afterwardsfamilymembersmaysharewiththeirthanksforthatyear.

1620年9月6日,距现在差不多400年以前,在英国的一个港口停了一只小船。
船的名字叫做“五月花号”。
有102个人上了船,其中70个是大人,32个小孩子,还有一些公鸡、母鸡及其他小动物。
同样是船,你们想到了圣经里面的什么故事?
诺亚方舟
上诺亚方舟的都有谁呢?
诺亚一家.
他们为什么上方舟呢!
相信神的话,会有大洪水。
你们猜这艘船上的人是谁?
他们为什么上船呢?
这些上船的人啊,都是信神的人,但是他们在当时的英国不受欢迎,因为他们传讲“不得救下地狱”的信息。
人们不愿意听,而且迫害他们。
所以,他们决定离开英国,去寻找一个自由的地方,可以敬拜上帝。
后来,他们被人们叫做“清教徒”,一心寻求上帝的人。
孩子们!
我们是基督徒,有的时候我们周围的人不愿意听我们谈论罪、谈论地狱、谈论赦免的信息,会不喜欢我们。
但是,就像“清教徒”一样,虽然当时不被人喜欢,但是竟然过了400年后,还有人纪念他们。
我们在地上的日子是很短暂的,我们要把眼光放到天上,神会纪念我们做正确的事情。
这些清教徒们坐着船开始航行,刚开始几周,还风平浪静,不久之后啊,海上起了很大的风暴,好多人都生病了。
但是,船上的人都对神有信心,所以他们决定相信神,进一步的冒险,继续航行。
过了65天,有一天早上,人们还在睡觉,突然听见有人喊“陆地,陆地!
”人们激动了,都跑出船舱,登上陆地。
但是,当时是冬天,他们会遇上些什么事情呢?
能不能存活呢?
登陆后的几周,清教徒们遇到一个又一个困难,他们四处寻找,想要找一个安全舒适的地方,却找不到,晚上到处都是野兽的咆哮声,越来越多的人生病,他们失望极了。
四周后,他们又起航了,去另一个小岛。
当他们到达后,他们发现了一件怪事,大部分土地都被开垦过,却到处看不到人,人去哪里了呢?

他们在那里待了几个月后,还是没有看见任何人,由于没有食物和医药,生病的人越来越多,很多人死掉了,只有20个大人和30个小孩活下来。
他们都伤心绝望极了。
到了三月初的时候,他们必须做出决定,是回英国呢?
还是继续在这片荒野里生存?

后来,斯夸托来了,他教他们怎么种玉米,怎么打猎,怎么养牛养猪。
接着的6个月,再没有人死去了,他们建好了新房子,斯夸托还把清教徒介绍给了印第安人的首领,他们签了一个合约,友好相处,互相帮助。
9月的时候,大收获的季节到了,男人们打了许多的火鸡,
女人们准备了许多的南瓜,做了好多菜,清教徒、印第安人开始庆祝。

他们首先为那些死去的人哀悼,然后感谢神让他们有大收获,有房子住,有好的领导,感谢帮助他们的印第安人。
从那以后,人们就延续了这个传统,在每年11月的最后一个星期四庆祝感恩节。
