Thisisasettlementofartworkshopwhichfocusesonthemainstreamart.ThisprojectislocatedinthemiddleofSiJiQingXiang,HaidianDistrictinBeijingcity.Itcoversabout1.29hetares,whichhastohouse90workshops.
Theproposalisanintervenientdesignofmasterplanningandsingleplanning.Abovethegroundarethesectionalartists’workshops,whicharemainlydividedintolower-levelworkshops(groundlevelandthefirst
level)andupper-levelworkshops(thesecondlevelandthefhirdlevel);thebasementhousethegarageandequipmentrooms,andpartofthelowerworkshopsareusedasstorerooms.Eachsingleworkshopiscontiguoustoeachotherthroughgroupplanning,thusformingthestreetsandcourtyard.Thegroundlevelisaimedatpublic“artfield”,andtheupperlevelisthelivingspaceoftheartiststhemselves.Meantime,alltheunitsgettogethertobeanidentifiedcityarchitecture.
Apublicartexhibitionhallinthenorthwestforthebuildingiselevatedtotheheightofthesecondfloor,whilethelowerpartformsadramaticentrancewithpublicspace,whichleadsthesurroundingcityenvironmentintotheinnerareaofthesettlement.Italsoexpressestheopenattitudeandtheresponsibilityoftheartworkshopthattakestothecommunity.

Surroundings:
thisprojectislocatedatPeachBlossomValleyleadingtotheMountTaionthewestofthemountaininTai’an.Therearetwoparkinglots,whichlocateattwodifferentelevations.
Generallayout:
thewholeplanpreservesthepublicparkinglotandtheinteriorparkinglot,whichmakefullyuseoftheheightdifference.Thelongrampwayconnectsthevisitorsonthemountainandatthefootofthemountain.Therampwayoverlapseachotherwithoutdisturbingthesight,thussatisfyingthebasicfunctionalrequirementofthevisitors.The
receptionhall,restaurants,souvenirsalesandothermainarchitecturespacearebuiltnearthelaketotakeadvantageofthebeautifulscene.Thewaitingporchissetuponthewaitingzonetothemountain.Andtherampandmarquisearealsobuiltbetweenthetwoparkinglots.TheofficeandVIPreceptionroomarebuiltononesideoftheroad.Thebuildingcrossestheroad,whichisconvenienttomanage.
Trafficorganisation:
thevisitorsfirsttakethebustothepublicparkinglot.Therefore,thevisitorscanenterthereceptionhallnotonlyfromthemainentrancebutalsofromthemuseumentrance.Aftervisitingthegeology
museumandunderstandingthetravelinformation,thevisitorscantakethebustothemountainfromtherampwaytothewaitingporch.Whencomingback,visitorscantakeoffthebus,buysomesouvenirsandthengototherestaurantsformeals.Theycanalsocomebacktothepublicparkinglotdirectlyfromtherampandthenleavehere.
Environmentlandscape:
thedesignfixesupthemainbodyofthebuildingaccordingtothefunctionalrelations.Theconnectionsareoutdoorspace.Visitorswalkingintheopenairhavetheaccesstoenjoythebeautifulsceneryoflakesandmountains.Thisprojectbringsthelakeviewintheinteriorofthearchitectureaswellastherampwayconnectingthehilltopandfoothill,whichaddstotastesandinterests.

InitiallybuiltastheAmericanLegationinthebeginningofthe20thcentury,NO.23ofQianmenEastStreethousedlotsofinstitutionsbeforetherenovation,whileitsoriginallayout,fiveindependentbuildingsandaquadrangle,hasbeendamagedafterseveralplanlessadditions.Therenovationisfocusonrestoringthequadrangleandmakingitahigh-gradecultural&fashioncentreinthecentreofBeijingcity,whichprovidesrestaurants,gallery,theatreandentertainmentservices.
Theoldbuildingsarerenewedandthoselow-gradeconstructionsarecleanedup.Brickwallsbehindbuildingsscreenthedisorderpartsthatincorporatetheexteriorspacesofthequadranglewith9agingtrees.Accordingtothepreservationregulationofthishistoricdistrict,thedelicatenorthgateandnorthwallarerestored.
Theaddedvolumesstepdowntomakethemselvessubsidiariesoftheoldones.Accessesforthemaredesignedviathefiveoldentrancesthatprovideenoughchancesforvisitorstobeinspiredbythehistoricatmosphere.Designersjuxtaposedthisrespectfortraditionwithadistinctlymodernvocabularyofsteelandglassstructuralelements,whichcouldnotbreachthereservedbuildings.Hidingbehindtheshadeoftrees,thecrystalvolumesrestraintheirexpressionandtreatthehistoricalscenesastheprimaryinteriorviews.Thestate-of-the-arttechniquesandmaterialsalsogivethemadistinctfeaturefromthe1920s’style,maintainingthedefinitionofhistory.

YintaiCentreisasignificantlandmarkprojectinthecentralbusinessdistrictinBeijing.Theproject“Xiu”isontheroofofannexbuildingthatissurroundedbythethreehigh-risebuildings.
Thereexistsastrongsenseofcentralaxissymmetryinthetraditionalarchitecture.Thisspatialrelationshipcontrolledbythisaxisissimilarwithlayoutofthreehigh-risebuildingsinYintaiCentre.Basedonthisprecondition,thedesignerbringsthisconceptinthedesignofthebar.Thedesignrearrangesthefunctionalareasofthebaraccordingtothespecialcounterpointandtransitionoftheaxis.Thus,thedialoguerelationshipwithenvironmentfromtheaspectsofplaneandspeciallayoutisestablished.
Afterthedesigningoftheplanelayout,thisprojectlaysemphasisonthesubordinaterelationsofthebuildingroofsofdifferentparts,andadoptsdifferentshapesofroofstointegratethesebuildingsintoanentirety.Take
TheRulesofArchitectureasanexample,thebuildingroofofthebaradoptssaddleroofinthemainbarandwinebar;thesuspensionroofincigarroom,vodkabarandadministrationbar;andthesinglepitchroofplusjointconnectionroofinthestage,kitchenandnorthcorridor.Thepseudo-classicbuildingsconnectwitheachotherthroughmodernvitreousspace.ThearchitecturaldesigntakesTheRulesofArchitectureofSongdynastystrictlytospecifythebuildingcolumnheight,roofing,modularandsoon.
Thewholebuildingsaremadeupofthreebasicfunctionalareas,namely,receptionarea,barareaandassistancearea.Amongthem,themainbaristhecentreofthebararea,whichissurroundedbythreethemebars.Thereceptionareaincludesthemainreceptionhallconnectingthenorthtowerandthesecondreceptionhallconnectingtheofficebuildingonthewest.Theassistanceareaconsistsofthekitchen,washingroomandthecloakroom.Thewholebarandthesurroundinghigh-risebuildingsmakeupoftwowaterscapecourtyards.

Accordingtothecharacteristicsofsurroundingbuildings,thepentroofparthouseinthesouthisusedforexhibition,andthepentroofparthouseisusedasVIProoms;thebuildingsinthewestisusedforkitchensandotherasauxiliaryfunctionrooms.Acentreofthreebuildingswithexistingandnewonesisformedbysettingthenewbuildinginthecentralareainthesquaresite.
Theexteriorfacingofthenewbuildingadoptsthecheapestmaterial–corrugatedironsheet.Partofroofusesglass,rightintheshadeofPhoenixtreeinthewest,hidingextrasunlightfortheinteriorofthebuilding.
Theinteriorofthemainbaradopts15metres×15metres’groinedbeamsteelstructurewiththesupportingofsidecolumns.Thecentreoftheroomisveryopenandbright.Theexteriorwallofthetwostoreybuildinginthenorthisexposeddirectlytheinteriorofthemainbar,facingthebarcounterinatacertainangle.Thecolourofthewholemainbarisinlight,transparentandopen,whichintegratesthenorthandthesouthcourtyards,andthebuildingintoanvisualintegrity.
Theoutsideoftheauxiliaryfunctionroomsinthewestsetsupaninteriorcorridortoprovideaspaceforsupplyingmealsandstaff’sactivities;thelastformedworkinginteriorspaceinthesouthwestcornertakesshapeofthreeindividualbutexactlythesameexteriorcourtyardscentreedthreelargecypresstrees,togetherwithgreenbamboosgrownaroundthem,forminguniqueinteriorlandscape.Theexteriorwallofcorridorisprocessedwithwhitepainting.
Theinteriordesignadoptspurewhitepaintasmuchaspossible,whichfurtherpresentstheexistingwoodenstructureroofandthenewbuilding’ssteelstructureroofbythewhitewall.Insomemainareas,somecollectionsofChinesetraditionalarchitectureareexhibitedfordecoration.
