Whyisinterestsoimportant?
Thereasonsareasfollows:
1.Theprimaryschoolstudentsareyoung,innocentandlively,andaboveall,areverycuriousaboutaforeignlanguageatschool,whichmeanstheyaremorethanwillingtotouchit.
2.However,thestudentscannotconcentratetheirattentiononthetextforlonginclass.NordotheyhaveacleargoaloflearningEnglish,meanwhiletheycannothavestrongperseveranceinthefaceoftroubleanddifficulty.Therefore,wecannotarrangetheprocessofteachingwellandwewillneverfinishtheteachingtasksuccessfullyifwedon’thavetheabilityofstimulatingtheirinterestinlearningEnglish.SoIthinkweshouldrealizeitandunderstandmoreaboutthestudents’characterwhenweareteachingEnglish.
NowthatinterestinlearningEnglishissoimportant,howcanwe
developstudents’interest?
Inmyopinion,onlyiftheEnglishteachersturntheclassroomintoanamusementparkcanstudentstakeaninterestinEnglishstudy.TraditionalwaysofteachingEnglishplaceaspecialemphasisontheoriesandtextbooks,butstudents’practicalactivitiesareignored.Also,theypaymuchmoreattentiontoresultsbutdon’ttakenoticeoftheteachingprocess;theyfocusontheteachers’teaching,makingthestudents’learningsecondplace.Intheviewofthedevelopment,thiskindofteachingmethodshasfallenbehindthetimesanditcannotadaptitselftothequality-orientededucation.ThenewpolicyofteachinghaschangedEnglishteachingalot,bringingaboutsomepleasantchanges.Sotheteachersshouldcreateasuitableenvironmenttomeetthestudents’needsandevenchangetheiroldteachingmethodstomaketheirclasslively.
Duringtheprocessofteaching,theEnglishteachersshouldmakeittheirprincipalaimtodevelopthestudents’creativeandpracticalabilities.Dorememberweareteachingthewholeclassandtryingtoarousethestudents’interestinlearningEnglishisthemostimportantpoint.Consideringthattheprimaryschoolstudents’character,thatis,theircuriosityandlovetooutshineothers,theEnglishteachersoughttomakestudents’activitiesthemainformsoftheirteaching.Theyshouldalsodesignasmanyrichandvariousclassactivitiesastheycaninorderthatthestudentscanlearnbyplayingandpracticingwhattheyjustlearned.Inaword,theteachersshouldkeepthestudents’intereststableandlong-lived.
1.Readandreciterhythmicsentencesandsingsongs;letsongsandchantsintereststudents.
Duringthecourseofteaching,weallknowthatsometimesthestudents
aretooactiveandcannottakelong-livednotice.However,theirimportantanddifficulttaskistomemorizeEnglishwords,expressions,patternsanddrills.Throughsomerhythmicsentences,songsandchants,teacherscanmaketheirteachinginteresting,vividandlively,whichwillteachthestudentsabetterwaytostudyEnglish.Thus,thestudentscanstudyEnglishstepbystep,andtheywillfeeliteasyandeagertolearnmoreEnglish,whichisinlinewiththeirpsychologicalandphysiologicalqualitiesandalsowiththeirspecialunderstandingofknowledge.Atthesametime,theelightandlivelyclassatmospherecouldalsoproviderichandinterestinginformationforthestudents,whichwillmakeitpossibleforthestudentstoformgoodinstinctivefeelforthelanguageanditwillinturnreducethestudents’heavyloadofhomeworkafterclassandschool.
Forexample,it’sverydifficultforthepupilstomemorizesomanyoppositewords,whichisindeedahardanddulltask.However,iftheteachersmakeupbeautifulpoems,stories,songsandchantsbyusingthosewords,memorizingwordswillbecomeaseasyasA,B,C.Asaresult,theywanttolearnmoreinthenextlesson,andtheyarealwayseagertohaveEnglishclass.
Apartfrommakingupsongsandchants,theteacherscanalsoaskanddirectthestudentsthemselvestotrycreatingstoriesfromtheirownimagination,however,theymustusethewordstheylearnedfromtheirEnglishbooks.That’sgoodforthembecausetheywilllearnmorebesidestextbooks’contents,suchastheircreativespirit,theirappreciativeabilityandtheirpluralisticqualities,whichwilllayagoodfoundationnotonlytotheirEnglishlearningbutalsototheirfurtherstudyandeventheirfuture.Inotherwords,throughreading,reciting,singingandchanting,thestudents“lose”theirshynessanddullness,butatthesametime“own”interestandmoreknowledge.ThestudentswillfeelitnaturaltostudyEnglishjustlikesingingasong.Asisknowntoall,theNaturalApproachconsidersinputasthemostimportantelementofanylanguageteachingprogram.Languageisbesttaughtwhenitisbeingusedtotransmitmessages,notwhenitisexplicitlytaughtforconsciouslearning.Thishasseveralimplicationsforclassroompractice.Itimpliesthatwhateverhelpscomprehensionisimportant.Asecondimplicationistheneedstobeconcernedprimarilywithwhetherthestudentsunderstandthemessage.Thethirdimplicationisthattheclassroommaybeaverygoodplaceforsecondlanguageacquisition.Thelastoneisthateffectiveclassroominputmustbeinteresting.SoweteachersshouldhavethestudentsfeelingeasyandcomfortablewhenlearningEnglish.Weevenallowthemtomakemistakeswhenspeaking.
2.Bringincompetitionmechanism;letcompetitionintereststudent.
Theprimaryschoolstudentsarebornhavingthequalityofbeingeagertodowellineverythinganddesiringtooutshineothers.Psychologistsholdtheviewthatcontestsandcompetitionsarethemotiveforceoflearning,whichwillenablethestudentstobeactiveandwhichisthebestwaytoimprovethestudents’abilityandtheirmarksandgrades.Propercompetitionactivitieswillnotonlystimulatestudents’interestandencouragethemtomakemoreprogressbutalsowillhelptodeveloptheirteamworkandcollectivismanditwillalsostimulatetheirenterprisingspirit.
Duringthecourseoftheirteaching,theteachersoftenholdsomecompetitionactivities.Forexample,whendoingthelisteningcomprehension,thestudentsarerequiredtoclosetheirtextbooksandtheteacherwillseewhocanhearthemostparts,whocanimitatebestthetonesandintonationsandwhocanrepeatmostclearly.HereteacherscanusetheTask-basedApproach,thatis,givethestudentssometasksbeforetheygo.Sobeforetheteachersplaythetapes,theywillgivethestudentssomepre-listeningquestions,thenaskthemtoanswerandseewho’sthebest.Generally,wecantesttheimportantpatternsinseveralgroups.Givethemseveralimportantpatternsandsetdifferentsituationsforthem.HerewemainlyusetheCommunicativeApproach.Whentheycommunicate,thestudentswillusethelanguagetoaccomplishsomefunctions,suchasarguing,persuadinganddiscussingintheirgroups.Moreover,becauseEnglishislearnedwellinasocialcontext,theteacher’ssettingorthestudents’choosingtheirfavoritesituationwillhelpthemalot.Aspeakerwillchooseaparticularwaytoexpresshisthoughtnotonlybasedonhisintentandhislevelofemotionbutalsoonwhomheisaddressingandwhathisrelationshipwiththatpersonis.Functionallinguisticsisconcernedwithlanguageasainstrumentofsocialinteractionratherthanasasystemthatisviewedinisolation.Itconsiderstheindividualasasocialbeingandinvestigatesthewayinwhichheacquireslanguageandusesitinordertocommunicatewithothersinhissocialenvironment.Real-worldlanguageinusedoesnotoperateinavacuum.Sothesituationstheteachersgiveshouldbevivid,justlikearealenvironmentinlife.Asaresultofthis,thestudentswillunderstandindepthaboutthepatternsintheirtextbooks.Ofcourse,whendoingthis,theteacherscanusedifferentwaystoarrangetheirclasses.Forexample,afterastudentfinishedhistaskinhisowngroup,hecanalsoputquestionstotheothergroups.Bydoingthis,theywillgetadeepimpressionandhaveabetterunderstandingofthesepatternsandatthesametimetheactivitieswilldeveloptheirspiritofcompetitionandteamwork,becauseifonecan’tanswertheothergroup’squestions,anotheronewillstandupandcontinueto“fightback”.
Asforreadingability,readingcompetitionissurelytoberecommended;aboutwriting,theteacherwillhavedictations,drawingstoseewhoisthefastest.Inall,Ifeelthecompetitionmechanismisnecessaryfortheteacherstoarrangetheirclass.
