Fantasyisagenreofart,literature,film,television,andmusicthatusesmagicandothersupernaturalformsasaprimaryelementofeitherplot,theme,setting,orallthree.Thegenreisgenerallydistinguishedfromsciencefictionandhorrorbyoveralllook,feel,andthemeoftheindividualwork,thoughthereisagreatdealofoverlapbetweenthethree(collectivelyknownasspeculativefiction).Initsbroadestsense,fantasycoversworksbymanywriters,artists,andmusicians,fromancientmythsandlegends,tomanyrecentworksembracedbyawideaudiencetoday.
Aswithotherformsofspeculativefiction,actionsandeventsinfantasyveryoftendifferfromthosepossibleinconsensusreality.Inmanycases,especiallyinolderworksoffantasybutinmanymodernworksaswell,thisisexplainedbymeansofdivineintervention,magic,orothersupernaturalforces.Inothercases,mostfrequentlyinworksofmodernfantasyinthehighfantasysubgenre,thestorymighttakeplaceinafantasyworldthatiswhollydifferentfromourown,completewithdistinctlawsofnaturethatpermitmagic.

PhilipPullmanwasborninNorwichon19thOctober1946.Theearlypartofhislifewasspenttravellingallovertheworld,becausehisfatherandthenhisstepfatherwerebothintheRoyalAirForce.HespentpartofhischildhoodinAustralia,wherehefirstmetthewondersofcomics,and
grewtoloveSupermanandBatmaninparticular.
Fromtheageof11,helivedinNorthWales,havingmovedbacktoBritain.Itwasatimewhenchildrenwereallowedtoroamanywhere,toplayinthestreets,towanderoverthehills,andhetookfulladvantageofit.HisEnglishteacher,MissEnidJones,wasabiginfluenceonhim,andhestillsendshercopiesofhisbooks.
AfterheleftschoolhewenttoExeterCollege,Oxford,toreadEnglish.Hedidanumberofoddjobsforawhile,andthenmovedbacktoOxfordtobecomeateacher.Hetaughtatvariousmiddleschoolsfortwelveyears,andthenmovedtoWestminsterCollege,Oxford,tobeapart-timelecturer.HetaughtcoursesontheVictoriannovelandonthefolktale,andalsoacourseexamininghowwordsandpicturesfittogether.Heeventuallyleftteachinginordertowritefull-time.
Hisfirstpublishednovelwasforadults,buthebeganwritingforchildrenwhenhewasateacher.Someofhisnovelswerebasedonplayshewroteforhisschoolpupils,suchasTheRubyInTheSmoke.
PhilipstilllivesinOxford,andhewritesinashedatthebottomofhisgarden.Theshedcontainstwocomfortablechairs(oneforwritingin,oneforsittingatthecomputerin),severalhundredbooks,asix-foot-longstuffedratwhichtookapartinhisplaySherlockHolmesandtheLimehouseHorror,aguitar,asaxophone,aswellasthecomputer,decoratedwithdozensofbrightlycolouredartificialflowersattachedtoitbyBlu-Tack.

AnotherproductoftechnologythatPhilipcan'tdowithoutisPost-itNotes,thesmallestyellowonesinparticular.Theyareveryusefulforplanningtheshapeofastory:
hewritesabriefsentencesummarisingasceneononeofthem,andthenputsthemonaverybigpieceofpaperwhichhecanfillwithuptosixtyormoredifferentscenes,movingthemaroundtogetthebestorder.

Stillwatching,Willsawthecatbehavestrangely.Sheputoutapaw/topatsomething/intheair/infrontofher,something/thatwasinvisible/toWill.Then/sheleaptback,withhertail/heldup.Willknewcatbehaviourandwatchedmorecarefully.Thecatapproachedtheplace/again,justanemptypatchofgrass/betweenthetreesandthebushes,andpattedtheair/oncemore.
