Introduction
TheAgricultureEducationContentStandardsaredesignedtoprovideabasisforinstructionandstudentassessmentinsecondaryagricultureprograms.Thecurriculumstandardsarewrittenintermsofhigher-orderthinkingandperformance-orientedoutcomes.Examplesofworkstudentsshouldbeabletoaccomplishareincludedandareintendedtoprovideinstructorswithexamplesof“hands-on”learningactivitiestopromotetheattainmentofagivenstandard.Theseexamplestypicallyintegratespecificperformancestandardsaswellascareerandcoreacademicperformancestandards.
Eachstandardisdesignedtobecomprehensiveenoughtoprovidedirectionforlocalagricultureprograms,yetflexibleenoughtoallowandencouragelocalinitiative.Thestandardsandexamplesofstudentactivitiesprovidethefoundationforthedevelopmentofassessment.
ThisisthefourtheditionoftheAgricultureEducationContentStandardsformerlyAgricultureModelCurriculumStandardsandIntegratedActivities.Thestandardsandexamplesofworkstudentsshouldbeabletodoweredevelopedbyclassroomagricultureteachers,membersoftheagricultureindustry,andothercontentspecialists.Theagriculturemodelstandardsandactivitieswerefirstwrittenin1991.
Thiseditiondiffersincontentandorganizationfromtheearliereditions.ThecontentstandardsandexamplesofworkstudentsshouldbeabletodoarepresentedtogetherfortheBasicCoreandforeachoftheAdvancedClusters.Itishopedthatthiswillmakethedocumenteasiertouse.Unlikethepreviousversion,thecareerperformancestandardshavebeenintegratedintothecurriculumstandards.
Afutureprojectwillincludecross-referencingtheacademiccontentstandardswiththecurriculumstandardsforagriculture.Thiswillprovideanaidtofacilitateintegrationofacademicandcareer-vocationaleducation.Agricultureinstructorswillbeabletodeterminethelevelofacademicintegrationeachclusterprovides.
OVERVIEWOFPROGRAMORGANIZATION
IntroductiontotheBasicCorePerformanceStandardsinAgriculture
TheBasicCorePerformanceStandardsaredesignedtoprovideafoundationinagricultureforallagriculturestudentsinCalifornia.Careerawareness,careerexploration,andskillpreparationareintegralpartsoftheperformancestandards(seefigure3).Asstudentsprogressthroughthecoreandmoveintospecificcareerclusters,thereisatransitionofemphasisfromcareerawarenessandgeneralexploration,toreal-life,occupationallyrelevantexperiencesofgreaterscopeanddepth.ThepurposesoftheBasicCorearetoprovideopportunitiesforstudentsto:
∙Acquireabroadunderstandingofallfacetsofmodernagriculture.
∙Developanawarenessandappreciationforthemanycareeropportunitiesinagriculture.
∙Participateinoccupationallyrelevantexperiencesthatwillassistincareerpreparation
