EmilyDickinsonhadherowndefinitiontopoetry.Shewroteinthe324ndletter:
“Ifireadabookitmakesmywholebodysocoldnofireevercanwarmme,Iknowthatisifeelphysicallyasifthetopeofmyheadweretakeoff,Iknowthatispoetry.”PoetryisbeautyandtruthtoEmilyDickinsonandshewaswillingtodieforthem,asherpoem---Idiedforbeauty---butwasscarce.EmilyDickinsonthoughtthatpoetryshouldbefullofthoughtsandproclaimthetruth.Sheemphasizedthatpoetryshouldexpressintensefeelingandrelievepainandcomfortpeople’shurt.Shehopedthatherpoetrybreatheswithvitalityandenergyandliveforever.ToEmilyDickinson,poetrymeantimmortality.
EmilyDickinsonwrotenearly1,800poemsinherwholelife.Naturewasoneofherfavoritesubjects,onwhichshewroteabout500poems.ShelovesnatureandnatureinspiresherafflatusofmainobjectsinEmilyDickinson’spoemswereanimals,sceneriesandseasons.Accordingtothethreedifferentobjects,let’susdividehernaturepoemsintothreepartnow.
