population,thelargest,hasdeclinedby50%inthelastdecade,accordingtoElizabethGriffin,
amarinebiologistwiththeenvironmentalgroupOceana.ThefigurespromptedOceanato
petitionthegovernmenttoupgradethelevelofprotectionfortheNorthAtlanticloggerheads
from
“threatened
”to
“endangered
”—meaningtheyareindangerofdisappearingwithout
additionalhelp.Whichraisestheobviousquestion:

anyway?
Itturnsout,accordingtoGriffin,thatwhilewehavedoneagoodjobofprotecting
the
turtles
for
the
weeks
they
spend
on
land
(as
egg-laying
females,
as
eggsandas
hatchlings),wehaveneglectedtheyearsspendintheocean.
“Thethreatisfromcommercial
fishing,”saysGriffin.Trawlers(whichdraglargenetsthroughthewaterandalongtheocean
floor)andlonglinefishers(whichcandeploythousandsofhooksonlinesthatcanstretchfor
miles)takeaheavytollonturtles.Ofcourse,likeeveryotherenvironmentalissuetoday,this
isplayingoutagainstthebackgroundofglobalwarmingandhumaninterferencewithnatural
ecosystems.
Thenarrow
strips
of
beach
on
which
the
turtles
lay
their
eggs
are
being
squeezedononesidebydevelopmentandontheotherbythethreatofrisingsealevelsas
theoceanswarm.Ultimatelywemustgetahandleonthoseissuesaswell,oracreaturethat
