General
Thefarfieldisrepresentedbytwocomponents(Eϑ,Eφ)atsphericalcoordinatesThetaandPhi.ThecoordinatesThetaandPhirelatetothecartesiancoordinatesystem,ascanbeseeninthe3Dplotbelow.SeeFarfieldViewforhelponthepossibleselectionsinthenavigationtree.
AllplotsarescaledlogarithmicindBbutcanbechangedtolinearintheFarfieldPlotSpecialSettingsdialog(usetheSpecials...-button).
Plottypeframe
Polar:
Plotsthefarfieldwithonecoordinatevaryingandonefixedasapolarplot.Underneaththeplot,secondarycoefficientssuchasfrequency,mainlobemagnitudeanddirection,3dB-angularwidthandsidelobesuppression,willbeshown.
Cartesian:
Plotsthefarfieldwithonecoordinatevaryingandonefixedasacartesianplot.YoucangetexactfieldvaluesbyusingtheoptionAxisMarkerfromtheResultsmenu.
2D:
Plotsthefarfieldwithbothcoordinatesvaryingasa2Dplotwitheachpointcoloredaccordingtoitsfieldvalue(seethecolorbarbelowtheplot).Additionally,youwillgettheexactfieldvaluebymovingthemouseonthedemandedpositionintheplot.Thevaluewillbeshownintheplot’slowerrightcorner.
3D:
Plotsthefarfieldwithbothcoordinatesvaryingasa3Dplot.
Vary/Anglestepwidthframe
Theta/Phi,Azimuth/Elevation,Alpha/EpsilonorVertical/Horizontal:
Selectherewhichcoordinateyouwanttobevariableinyourplot.TheseradiobuttonsareonlyactiveifyouhaveselectedPlotTypePolarorCartesian.
Phi/Theta, Elevation/Azimuth, Epsilon/ Alpha orHorizontal/Vertical:
ThetitleofthisentrydependsonyourselectionintheVaryframeandontheselectedcoordinatesystemintheCoordinatesystemframe.IfyouhaveselectedThetatobevariable,youwillhavetosettheconstantvalueforPhihere.ElseentertheconstantvalueforTheta.Youcanenterdecimalfractionsusingyourkeyboard.ThisentryisonlyactiveifyouhaveselectedPlotTypePolarorCartesian.
ThetaStep/PhiStep,Azimuth/ElevationStep,Alpha/EpsilonStep,Vertical/HorizontalStepor Step:
ThetitleofthisentrydependsonyourselectionintheframesVary,PlotTypeandCoordinatesystem.Youmayentertheangularstepsizeindegreesforyourplothere.Inaddition,2Dand3Dplotsallowtheindependentspecificationofthetastepandphistep.SelectLockstepstoenforceacommonstepwidth.Smallstepsizeswillresultinalongtimetocalculateyourplot.
ForPlotTypePolarorCartesian,firsttryastepsizeof5.ForPlotType2Dor3D,muchmorepointshavetobecalculated;therefore,itisbettertofirstsetastepsizeofatleast15.
Thesmallestallowedstepsizeis0.01degreeforPolarorCartesianand0.25degreefor2Dor3D.Toenterstepsizes<1,pleaseuseyourkeyboard.Onlycertainstepsizesareallowed.Yourinputwillbesettotheclosestsmallerallowedvalue.
FarfieldandStructureviewframe
Thesesettingsareonlyactiveifthe3D-plottypehasbeenchosen.Withthesesettingsitispossibletoplotthefarfieldandthestructureatthesametime.Itisveryhelpfultorealizethespatialrelationbetweenthemainorsidelopesandthemodelledantenna.

Enablestoplotthestructureintothe3D-farfieldplot:
Structuretransparent:
Onlyactiveif"Showstructure"isselected.Plotsthestructuretransparent.Usethisoptionincasestheantennaobscuresmostofthefarfieldplot.
Farfieldsizeslider:
Onlyactiveif"Showstructure"isselected.Movingthissliderzoomsthefarfieldplotwithoutzoomingthestructure

OpenstheColorRampdialogboxallowingyoutosetyourpreferredcolormappingforthe2D/3Dfarfieldplots.

Incaseofplottype3D,usecolorramptomapplotvaluestocolors.UsetheColorRampdialogtomodifythemapping.
Drawsteplines
Incaseofplottype3D,drawblacklinesateachangularstep.Thestepsizecanbesetinthefarfieldplotdialogbox.Steplinesarenotveryusefulinunzoomedplotswithstepsizesof1degreeorbelow.
Drawisolongitude/latitudelines
Activatesisolinesforthelongitudeandlatitudeofthecurrentlyactivecoordinatesystem.Theselineswillbedisplayedtogetherwithfarfield3Dplots.
Plotrangeforpolarangles0..360degree
Thissettingsextendstheplotrangeofthepolarangle(theta,elevation,alpha)tothefullcircle.Theplotrangeofthecorrespondinglateralangle(phi,azimuth,epsilon)isreducedaccordingly,dependingontheactiveplottype.
Plotrange–180..180degree
Choosetheplotrangeofthelateralangles(phi,azimuth,epsilon)symmetricabouttheorigin.Thissettingisalsoappliedtothepolaranglesifpossible.
Angularrangeframe
Thesesettingsrestricta2Dor3Dfarfieldplottoaspecifiedangularrange.
Plotangularrangeonly:
Activatesthephiandthetaplotrange.
ThetaStart/ThetaEnd:
Setsthedisplayedthetarange.
PhiStart/PhiEnd:
Setsthedisplayedphirange.
Pleasenotethatbothangularrangesalwaysrefertosphericalcoordinates.
Frequency/Time
Setsthedesiredplotfrequencyortheplottime.SelectSettimetotogglebetweenfarfieldcalculationandtransientfielddisplay.Thesesettingsareonlyavailableforbroadbandfarfields.
SaveAsSource
Usethisbuttontosavethefarfieldtoafilewhichcanbeusedforsettingupafarfieldsource.
Theangularstepsizeoftheplot willbeusedasstepsizeinthesavedASCIIfile.Thereforeitisrecommendedtosetthestepsizetoarathersmallvalue(e.g.1degree)toensurehighaccuracyofthesimulationwherethefarfieldsourceisused.
PleaseusetheOriginpagetosettheorigintothecenteroftheantennain.IncasethispageisnotavailablepleaseusetheVBAobjectFarfieldArraytosettheoriginfirstandsavetheresultingfarfieldassource(ExampleFarfieldOriginVBA).
ThisbuttonisdisabledfortheplottypesCartesianandPolarPlot.

Abortsthecurrentcalculation.Notethatthelastplothasbeendeleted.YouwillhavetocalculateanewplotbymakingtheappropriatesettingsandpressingtheOKorApplybuttonagain.

Physicaldescription
Frequencyselectivesurfacesareincreasinglyusedforthefrequencyfilteringofplanewavesinradarorcommunicationssystems.Aone-ortwo-dimensionalperiodicarrayofresonantstructuresonabackingmaterial,eitheraperturesinametallicsheetormetallicpatchesonasubstrate,actsasafilterforaplanewavearrivingfromanyangleofincidence.Inthisexampleanarrayoffullwavelengthresonantconductingringsonadielectricsubstrateissimulated.SincetheFSSwouldbeusedoncurvedstructureslikeradomes,itisdesirablethattheFSShavethesameresonantfrequencyforallincidentplanewaveangles.Foragivenpolarisation,ringresonatorsareknowntobestablewiththescanangle.CSTMICROWAVESTUDIO®(CSTMWS)canbeusedtoestablishtheangulardependenceoftheresonantfrequency.

Parameterdefinitionandpreliminarysettings
Thesimulationofanentirearrayofresonantringswouldbeprohibitivelytimeandmemoryconsuming.TheuseofCSTMWS’sunitcellboundaryconditionsinthedirectionsofperiodicityallowsarapidbutnolessaccuratesimulationoflargesurfaces.Settingupthesimulationmaybegreatlyeasedbyusingthe“FSS–UnitCell(FD)”template,whichautomaticallyappliesunitcellboundaryconditionsinthex-andy-directionsandsetsupFloquetportexcitationsinthepositiveandnegativez-directions.Thereisnoneedtodefinemasterandslaveboundaryconditions;thephaserelationoftheopposingboundariesisautomaticallysetbyspecifyingtheincidentangleoftheinwardtravellingplanewave.
Itisonlynecessarytoconstructasingleringonitsbackingsubstrate.Constructionofthegeometryitselfissimple:
asubstrateisdefinedusingabrickprimitiveobject,andthenahollowcylindercanbeusedtocreatethering.Theconductingringisa“lossymetal”typecopper,andthesubstrateisArlonAD300witharelativepermittivityof3.
