Thisstatementprimarilyconsistsofthreeclaims:
(1)aglobaluniversityshoulddesigntosolvetheworld'smostpersistentsocialproblems;
(2)aglobaluniversitycoulddesigntosolvetheseproblems;(3)allnationsshouldhelpsupportthedevelopmentofaglobaluniversity.Forthefirstclaim,Iconcedeitistheundeniableresponsibilityforuniversitiestohelpsolvesocialproblems,buttheirresponsibilityisnotcircumscribedinsuchanarrowscope.Forthesecondthethirdclaims,mypositionisastronglyopponentone,asdiscussedbelow.
FirstIlargelyagreewiththespeakerinsofarasuniversitiesshouldtakeonresponsibilitytohelpsolvethesocialproblemsprevailingaroundtheglobe.Inthissense,aglobaluniversityhasanevidentascendance.Withresearchersandstudentscomingfromnationsallaroundtheworld,theglobaluniversitycouldbreedamoreopen,multiculturalacademicambienceaswellasasocialenvironment,inwhichdifferentconceptsandideologiesarefusedtogetherintoaharmoniousone.Theascendanceismoreevidentinthescientificrealm.Nowadaysalotoffrontiertechnologyandscientificresearchmustbedonewithalargegroupofexcellentscientistsfromeverypartoftheworld-suchasthehumangenomeresearch,biotechnology,frontiermedicineandsoforth.Inshort,notonlyincultural,butalsoinscientific,theglobaluniversitiesallhaveapeerlessadvantagecomparingwithsomeotherlocalones.
However,evenifthoseglobaluniversitiestrytotakeontheresponsibilitytosolvethesocialproblems,hardly,itseemstome,cantheyaloneaffordthis.Therearethreemainreasonstosupportmypositionhere.First,asidefromengagingstudentsintheprocesstosolvesocialproblems,schoolsalsohavesomeotherirreplaceablemissionsinthedevelopmentofotherfields-suchasthetheoreticalscience,andthedifferentdomainsoffinearts-allofwhichseemtohavelittleconnectionwiththosesocialproblemsHowever,couldtheserealmsallbeabandonedbytheglobaluniversityforthesakeofimprovingthesettlementofsocialproblems?
Hardly.Second,thesettlementoftheglobalsocialproblemsmustbesolvedwiththedevotionfrommanyotherfactors,likethegovernment,thepublic,theenterprisesandcorporationsconnectedwitheveryfacetsofsociety.Withouttheirdedication,nomatterhowfervidandarduoustheglobaluniversityis,theirattemptstosolvethoseproblemswouldprobablyturnouttobefutile.Additionally,somesocialillsjustcomefromthegovernmentitself,likecorruption,bribery,universitycouldaccomplishlittleifthepoliticalleadersandthegovernmentofficialsdonothaveanyintentionorawarenesstosolve.Evenworse,toomuchfinancialsupportmaycoercetheuniversityintobeingapuppet,controlledbycertainmisbehavedgovernment.Thus,thespeaker’ssuggestionmayeventuallygetbackfired.
Moreover,tothespeaker'sthirdclaim,Ijustconsiderhiswishgood,butimpractical.First,astodifferentnations,themostpersistentsocialproblemsmayhavedistinctmeanings:
forthepeoplelivinginwesterndevelopedcountries,theymayaccepttheanti-terrorismastheirmostpersistentsocialproblems;whileforthosewholiveinpoorAfricancountries,maybethemostpressingonesaretoeliminatehunger,povertyandAIDS.Withvarious,evencontrastivedefinitionsonthemostpersistentsocialproblems,nationscouldneverreachtoacommongroundtobeginwith,nottomentiontocombinetogetherestablishingaglobaluniversitytosolvethoseproblems.Second,eventhoughnationscouldfinallyignorethosedisparitiesandcometoanagreement,maybenoteverynationhavetotakeonsuchresponsibilitiestohelpsupporttheglobaluniversity.Asnotedabove,forthoseAfricannations,theyhavealreadyfeltdifficulttocopewithsomemoreurgent(pressingsocial)problems,howcanwestillbefastidioustothemandaskthemtoequallystressfocusonthedevelopmentofaglobaluniversity?
Inmyopinion,thistaskshouldbetakenonmorebythedevelopedcountrieswhichhavemorecapabilitiesandcapitalforsubsidizetheestablishmentofglobaluniversities.
Insum,grantingthatIagreewiththespeaker'sfirstclaim,theresttwostillseemplausibleaswellasimpracticalforme.Undoubtedly,thereareamyriadofadvantagesofestablishingaglobaluniversitydesignedtoengagestudentsintheprocessofsolvingtheworld'smostpersistentsocialproblems,buthardlycouldtheuniversityaloneaffordthistask,neithercouldorshoulditbecomeanequalresponsibilitysharedbyallnations.
2.TOPIC:

IamastudentmajoringinJournalism,adisciplinethatistightlyconnectedwiththesocialpractice.EveryyearwhenImetsomeformergraduateswhohaveengagedinthemedia-relatedjobsforacoupleofyears,almostallofthemsimultaneouslytoldmehowintensethejobcompetitionis.Andalmostallconcludedwiththesameassertion:
"Itisuselesstoreadtoomuchbooksortaketoomuchcoursesinotherfields,whatisthemostimportantistoenterintothesocietyandlearnsocialskillsassoonaspossible."Isincerelyappreciatetheirwords,butIstillhavetosayNOtothissuggestion.Inmyview,tolimityourselfinaworldonlywiththeknowledgeofyourfield,oronlywithsomeskillstosurviveinthesociety,almostamountstoendyourfuturebeforeyouactuallybegins.Inthissense,weshouldfirstmakeclearonequestion:
whatarethemostessentialfacultiesthesocietyasksforus?
Thefirstandforemostone,inmyopinion,isthelogicalandreasoningfaculties.Somestudentsmaymistakenlyperceivethatsuchfacultiesareonlyofgreatimportancewhentheychooseoccupationslikelogicians,physicists,orpoliticalanalysts.However,thebasiclogicalandreasoningfacultiesarealmostneededineveryfacetofsocietynowadays.Intheeconomicfields,theabilitytosynthesize,analyzeisessentialtocorrectlyunderstandthemarketandcustomer'sconsumingbehavior.Inthemedicalfields,theabilitytoweighcauseandeffectandtoseethingsinperspectivefacilitatesadoctortobetterjudgethepatients'diseaseandchoosethebesttreatment.Forme,thesekindsofcapabilitiescanseldombeobtainedwhenIfocusedsimplyonthejob-orientedcurriculums.Instead,Iowethesetothestudyinginotherfieldslikehistory,classics,andmathematics-allofwhichseematfirstglanceofnouseformypursuitofidealoccupations.
Thesecondimportantfacultyneededbythesocietyistheabilitiestoco-operateandcommunicate.However,Istillfeelthatsuchabilitiesmustbegainedfromaliberaleducationinvolvingmanyotheraspectsoflife,ratherthanfromthestudyofsomeso-calledwork-orientedcourses.Inordertobreedstudents'senseofco-operationandcommunication,collegesanduniversitiesoffernumerousopportunitiesforus:
students'communities,volunteerjobs,researchgroups,andsoforth.Fromsuchkindsofcollectiveactivities,weareabletohaveaccesstoamultitudeofpeople,relations,andevents,anyofwhichiswhatweneedtofaceinthefuturejobs.Inthissense,theabilityofco-operationandcommunicationisobtainedinourpursuitinotherfieldsorotheractivities.
Thethirdimportantfactoressentialinthefuturejobsmaybetheabilitytobecreativeandprofessional.Thosetwomayseemtobeopposite,astosomeextendtobeprofessionalwilllieuponthesacrificeoncreativity.Butactuallytheyarejusttwoproductsarisingfromthesameprocess-tolearnandabsorbknowledgeinabroaderscope.Understandablymanywillopposemyopinionandarguethatprofessionalknowledgecouldonlybegainedfromfocusingonjob-relatedfields.Justletmeillustratesomeexamples.Fromstudyingthestructureoflotusleaf,mechanicscientiststhendiscoveredabrand-newworldonananometriclevel;fromresearchingtheecholocationofbats,oceanographersdevelopedsonarsystemthatfacilitateshumantobetterplumbthedeep-seamineralresources.Suchatruthisalsotellingwhenitcomestoartfield.Paintingstudentswhohasafullscaleofknowledgeonanatomywouldobtainabetterunderstandingonhumanbody,therebyhelpingtobetterportrayandexpressit.Allofsuchliberalstudyhavenot,thoughasthespeakerimplies,distractedstudentsfromtheirownprofessionalpursuits;instead,these“irrelevancies”infactpromotenotonlytheunderstandingandcognitionontheirchosenfields,butalso,thebrandnewangleofviewwhichhelpsignitenewideasand
