guiltemergesalittlelater,inconjunctionwithachild'sgrowing
graspofsocialandmoralnorms.Childrenaren'tbornknowing

statementsappeaseparentsandfriends—andtheirown
consciences.Thisiswhyresearchersgenerallyregardso-called
moralguilt,intherightamount,tobeagoodthing.
Inthepopularimagination,ofcourse,guiltstillgetsabadrap.It
isdeeplyuncomfortable—it'stheemotionalequivalentof
wearingajacketweightedwithstones.Yetthisunderstandingis
outdated.“Therehasbeenakindofrevivalorarethinkingabout
whatguiltisandwhatroleguiltcanserve,”saysAmrishaVaish,
apsychologyresearcherattheUniversityofVirginia,adding
thatthisrevivalispartofalargerrecognitionthatemotions
