Nowsweet,sweetitisthroughthelandtobestraying

Butlo,theoldinn,andthelightsandthefire,

THEBRIDGEANDTHESTREET
Inthemidstofthebridgetherewestoppedandwewondered
InLondonatlast,andthemoongoingdown,
Allsulliedandredwherethemast-woodwassundered
Bythevoidofthenight-mist,thebreathofthetown.
OneachsidelaytheCity,andThamesranbetweenit
Dark,struggling,unheard'neaththewheelsandthefeet.
Astrangedreamitwasthatweeverhadseenit,
Andstrangewasthehopewehadwanderedtomeet.
Wasallnoughtbutconfusion?
Whatmanandwhatmaster
Hadeachofthesepeoplethathastenedalong?
Likeafloodflowedthefaces,andfasterandfaster
Wentthedriftofthefeetofthehurryingthrong.
Tillalltheseseemedbutonething,andwetwainanother,
Athingfrailandfeebleandyoungandunknown;
Whatsignmidallthesetotellfoemanfrombrother?
Whatsignofthehopeinourheartsthathadgrown?
Wewenttoourlodgingafarfromtheriver,
Andsleptandforgot--andrememberedindreams;
AndfriendsthatIknewnotIstrovetodeliver
Fromacrowdthatswepto'erusinmeasurelessstreams,
WendingwhitherIknewnot:
tillmeseemedIwaswaking
TothefirstnightinLondon,andlaybymylove,
Andshewornandchanged,andmyveryheartaching

Daygrew,andnolongerwasduskwithitstriving,

Waslight,andunworthy,hadbeenandwasgone;
Ifhopehaddeceivedus,ifhidwereitstreasure,
Noughtnowwouldbeleftusofalllifehadwon.
Olove,standbesideme;thesunisuprisen
OnthefirstdayofLondon;andshamehathbeenhere.
ForIsawournewlifelikethebarsofaprison,
Andhopegrewa-cold,andIparleyedwithfear.
Ah!
Isaddenthyface,andthygreyeyesarechiding!
Yea,butlifeisnolongerasstoriesofyore;
Fromusfromhenceforthnofairwordsshallbehiding
Thenightsofthewretched,thedaysofthepoor.
Timewaswehavegrieved,wehavefeared,wehavefaltered,
Forourselves,foreachother,whileyetweweretwain;

Butnoneoftheneighbourswereinitsavethesquire'sthick-lippedson,
Ayouthandafoolandacaptain,whocameandwentaway,
Andleftmegladofhisgoing.Therewaslittleforustosay
Ofthewaranditswhyandwherefore--andwesaiditoftenenough;
Thepapersgaveusourwisdom,andweuseditupintherough.
ButIheldmypeaceandwondered;forIthoughtofthefollyofmen,
Thefairlivesruinedandbrokenthatne'ercouldbemendedagain;
Andthetalebyliesbewildered,andnocauseforamantochoose;
Nothingtocurseortobless--justagametowinortolose.
ButherewerethestreetsofLondon--strifestalkingwideintheworld;
Andtheflagofanancientpeopletothebattle-breezeunfurled.
Andwhowashelpingorheeding?
Thegaudyshopsdisplayed
Thetoysofrichmen'sfolly,byblindedlabourmade;
Andstillfromnaughttonothingthebright-skinnedhorsesdrew
Dullmenandsleek-facedwomenwithneveradeedtodo;
Whileallaboutandaroundthemthestreet-floodebbedandflowed,
Wornfeet,greyanxiousfaces,greybacksbowed'neaththeload.
Lothesonsofanancientpeople!
Andforthistheyfoughtandfell
Inthedaysbyfamemadeglorious,inthetalethatsingerstell.
Wetwowestoodinthestreetinthemidstofamightycrowd,
