AmeliaEarhartwasborninAtchison,Kansas,onJuly24,1897.Inthosedays,airplaneswerenotnearlyascommonastheyaretoday.Earhartwas12yearsoldbeforesheeversawanairplane,andshedidnottakeherfirstflightuntil1920.AmericaEarhartwassothrilledbyherfirstairplaneridethatshequicklybegantotakeflyinglessons.
HerfirstinstructorwasNetaSnook,oneofthefirstwomentograduatefromtheCurtissSchoolofAviation(飞行).Earhartborrowedmonefromhermothertobuyatwo-seatplane.ShegotherUSflyinglicenceinDecember1921,andin1923,Earhartreceivedherinternationalpilot’slicense—onlythe16thwomantodoso.
AmeliaEarhartwasn’tafraidtobreakdownbarriers.AfterflyingacrosstheAtlanticasapassengerin1928,AmeliaEarhart’snextgoalwastocompleteatransatlanticcrossing(横跨大西洋)alone.In1927,CharlesLindberghbecamethefirstpersontomakeasolononstopflightacrosstheAtlantic.In1932,exactlyfiveyearsafterLindbergh’sflight,Earhartbecamethefirstwomantorepeatthefeat(壮举).
Shedecidedthathernexttripwouldbetoflyaroundtheworld.InMarch1937,sheflewtoHawaiiwithfellowpilotPaulMantztobeginthisflight.Earhartlostcontroloftheplaneontakeoff,however,andtheplanehadtobesenttothefactoryforrepairs.
InJune,shewenttoMiamitoagainbeginaflightaroundtheworld,thistimewithFredNoonanashernavigator(领航员).ThepairmadeittoNewGuineain21days,eventhoughEarhartwastiredandill.Duringthenextlegofthetrip,theydepartedNewGuineaforHowlandIsland,atinyislandinthemiddleofthePacificOcean.July2,1937,wasthelasttimeEarhartandNoonancommunicatedwithanearbyCoastGuardship.Theywereneverheardfromagain.
