TodayonlyonepersoninfiveintheUnitedStatesliveswithin50milesofhisbirthplace.Sincethecountrywasfirstsettled,Americanshavemovedaroundagreatdeal,andareoftenfarawayfromtheirparents.Becausetheyhavebrokentieswiththeirpastatayoungage,chosentheirownoccupations,establishedtheirownhomesanddevelopedtheirownlifestyles,fewAmericanchildrengrowupcloselysurroundedbygrandparents,aunts,unclesandcousinsastheydoinItaly,Nigeria,orIndia,forexample.ThisalongwiththefactthatmodernAmericanfamiliesdonothaveservantshasmadethe“baby-sitter”avitalpartoftheAmericanscene.A“sitter”issomeonewhoishiredtocareforchildrenforaspecificlengthoftime—usuallyrelativelyshort—whiletheparentsareoutforanevening,goingtoapartyoracourseofstudyforexample.Sometimesthebaby-sitterisalsohiredforlongerperiod,perhapswhentheparentsareawayforaweekend.Insuchcasesthe“sitter”islikelytobeamatureandmotherlywoman.Forshortperiods,teen-agers,collegestudents,nursingstudents,andothersarecommonlyemployedonanhourlybasis.
Fromthepointofviewofconvenience,thebestsittersareoftenyoungpeoplewholiveinyourapartmentbuildingorclosebyintheneighborhood.Thisgivesyouachancetomeettheparentsandseewhattheyarelike.Ifanemergencyoccurs,youngsitterscancallupontheirparentsquicklyforhelp;youdonothavetotakethemfartoseethemhomeatnightorpayexpensivetaxifares.Anotheradvantageisthatyoungpeoplelivingclosebycanusuallyfillinquitereadilyonshortnoticeorforshortperiodsoftime.
