值得关注的是,在此过程中,许多新词汇应运而生,它们体现了当代经济贸易的新思路、新概念和新技术。
要想掌握所有商务领域的新词汇,难度是可想而知的,但若能熟悉这些新词汇的特性,将会大有裨益。
总的说来,这些词具有时代性、创造性,并且富有一定的规律性。
商务英语词汇构词法,词汇的发展要紧跟时代的步伐,如20世纪90年代出现的knowledgeeconomy,softlanding等。
近年来随着互联网的广泛应用,网络英语新词汇可谓遍地开花:
如e-shopping,e-market,e-cash,e-revenue,e-campaigning,e-precinct(电子选区),mousepotato(电脑迷),blog,netizen(网民)等。
同时,伴随着信息技术的进一步发展,又出现了诸如B2B(商家对商家的在线交易模式),CBO(消费产品部),BCO(商务客户部),ShoppingRobot(购买指南器),virtualstore(虚拟商店)等新词汇。
商务英语词汇构词法,在社会发展过程中,人们为了表达新概念、新事物,就需要以各种方式创造大量词汇。
这些词汇有的是由商品的名称派生出来的新词,如Frisbee(玩具飞碟),miniteller(迷你出纳机),lasercomp(激光电脑排版机),Xerox(全录影音)等。
有些词是由地名或人名等专有名词衍变出来的,如Hitchcockian(希区柯克式的,悬疑的),Mcluhanesque(麦克卢恩式的,电子化的),Greenspeak(格林斯潘式语言)等。
还有些词涉及科学技术,如penetralium(核心组织),ekistics(城市与区域计划学),Nanometer(纳米技术),IADS(网络成瘾综合征)等,商务英语词汇构词法,大多数商务英语新词汇的构成有规律可循,主要通过复合法、缩略法和词缀法来创造。
商务英语词汇构词法,在英美经贸报纸杂志中,复合词颇为盛行,主要是因为它们通俗易懂,形式简洁灵活。
一般说来,复合词可作形容词、名词或动词。
如:
sell-offs(被收购),price-to-earningsratio(市盈率),system-specifictechnology(系统专门技术),customer-relationship-management等。
在众多复合词中,形容词复合词占据相当比重,如以下这些词出现的频率还是比较高的:
top-of-the-line,hot-button,conflict-of-interest,up-to-theminute,instant-satisfaction,inflation-adjusted等。
商务英语词汇构词法,缩略法是现代英语中一种很重要的构词手段,在报刊语体中使用尤为广泛。
缩略词又主要有首字母缩略词和缩短词两种。
首字母缩略词如:
NAFTA(NorthAmericanFreeTradeAgreement北美自由贸易协定),WTO(WorldTradeOrganization世界贸易组织),IFC(InternationalFinanceCenter国际金融中心),CBOL(commonbusinessorientedlanguage商业通用语言),ACM(automatedcheckoutmachine自动收款机),ATM(automatedtellermachine自动取款机),BID(businessimprovementdistrict经济开发区,SOSO(smalloffice,homeoffice家居办公),等等。
另外,缩短词可经常通过裁剪法、紧缩法或标点符号来构成,如:
Corp(corporation公司),divi(divident红利),Motown(motor+town汽车城),coml(commercial电视广告),contr(contract合同),admin(administration管理)等。
商务英语词汇构词法,所谓词缀法,就是通过添加前缀或后缀来创造新词,如:
merger意为“兼并”,给merger加上前缀de-,产生新词demerger,意为“分拆”,指出售子公司或部门的企业策略。
若把-ize放在dollar一词后面,新词dollarize就产生了,意为“美元化”。
商务英语中常见的词缀有:
cyber-,mini-,ploy-,Euro-,inter-,multi-,macro-,extra-,non-,hyper-,para-,auto-,-ian,-log,-holic,-net,-phobia,等等。
要掌握这些新词的意思,首先必须了解这些词缀的基本意思,并且还要注意有些词缀可能带有多重意思。
