Yes,exactly. That’sallright. ButI'msogratefulfortheirhospitality(好客,殷勤). Theyarejustawonderfulfamily,andforthemtoopenuptheirbackyardforusisjustterrific. Sothisisreally--oh,I’vegotamic. Sothankyoutotheentirefamilyforopeningup--andthankstoallofyoufortakingthetimetobehere. BecauseIwantto--IwastellingJohnandNicolethatalotoftimes,whenyou'reinWashington,you'rebusy,you’vegotalotofstufftodo,andyou'reinabubblewhenyou'rePresident. Andsometimesyoujustdon'thavetheopportunitytohavethekindsofinteractions(交互,相互作用)thatIusedtohaveevenwhenIwasasenator.
Andsothesekindsofformats1areterrificforme. Andmyhopeis,isthatdespiteallthesepeoplewhoareherewithcamerasandmicrophonesandallthatstuff,thatpeoplewon'tbeshy--becausethewholepointofthisisformetoheardirectlyfromyouandtoansweryourquestions,hearaboutyourconcerns,hearaboutyourhopes,andhopefullythatwilltranslateitselfintosomeofthethingsthatwe'redoingattheWhiteHouse.
Iobviouslywanttomakesomeintroductionsthat--Ithinkallofyouknowthatyou’vegotsomemembersofCongresswhoareworkingveryhardhereinNorthernVirginia,andIwanttoacknowledgethem. Andwe'vealsogotacoupleofsmallbusinessowners,becauseoneofthethingsIwanttotalkaboutishowwecangrowtheeconomyandgetpeoplebacktowork,andsowhobettertohearfromthanacoupleofsmallbusinessowners. Don'tworry,I'mnotgoingtocallonyou,butI'mjustgladyou'rehere.

--whoistheCEOofTargetLabs,Inc. (Applause.) Andsowe'regladthatyouguyscouldjoinus.
Now,I'monlygoingtosayafewthingsatthetop. AndIwanttotalkalittlebitaboutwhyIdecided4torunforPresidentinthefirstplace,backin2007-2008.
Havingservedasastatesenator,havingthenservedasaUnitedStatessenator,Ihadhadachancetoseehoweconomicpolicieswerehavinganeffectonworking-classfamiliesandmiddle-classfamiliesforalongtime. AndmywifeandI,wecameoutofhardworkingfamilieswhodidn’thavealot,butbecausetheeconomywasgrowing,becausetherewasanemphasisonwhatwasgoodforthemiddleclass,wewereabletogetagreateducation,wewereabletogetscholarships. Michelle’sdadworkedasablue-collarworker,butjustonthatonesalaryhewasabletoprovideforhisfamilyandmakesurethattheyalwayshadenoughandthekidshadopportunities.
Andwhatitseemedlikewas,foraboutadecadethere,middle-classfamilieswerelosingmoreandmoreground. Andsomeofthathadtodowithchangesintheglobaleconomyandgreatercompetitionfromaroundtheworld. Butalotofithadtodowiththepoliciesthathadbeenputinplace,whichreallyboileddowntocuttingtaxes,especiallyformillionairesandbillionaires;cuttingregulations--thatmadeconsumersandworkersmorevulnerable(易受伤害的);failingtomakeinvestmentsthatweresocriticalingrowingourmiddleclassoverthelongterm.
AndsowhenIranforPresident,mygoalwastomakesurethatwegetasetofeconomicpoliciesinplacethatwouldlaythefoundationforlong-termgrowthinthe21stcenturysothatthe21stcenturywouldbeanAmericanCentury,justlikethe20thcenturyhadbeen.
Andthat'swhatwe'vetriedtodooverthelast19months,inthemidstoftheworstfinancialcrisisthatwe'veseensincetheGreatDepression. Thefirstthingwehadtodowasjuststopthebleeding,stabilize5thefinancialsystemandmakesurewedidn’ttripintoaGreatDepression. Andwehavedonethat.
SowhenIwassworninonthatverycolddayinJanuary--someofyoumayremember--welost750,000jobsinthatmonthalone. Nowwe'veseeneightconsecutive6monthsofprivatesector7(私营部门)jobgrowthbecauseofthepolicieswe’veputinplace.
Wewereontheverge8offinancialmeltdown. Anybodywhowasinvolvedinbusinessatthattimeremembersbankswerenotlendingatall. Youcouldn’tevengetanauto9loanoraconsumerloan. Andnowthefinancialsystemshavestabilized10,althoughthey’renotcompletelywhereweneedthemtobe. Theeconomywasshrinkingatapaceof--anastounding11(令人震惊的)paceofabout6percentannually12. Andnowtheeconomyhasbeengrowing.
Sowestoppedthebleeding,stabilizedtheeconomy,butthefactofthematteris,isthatthepaceofimprovementhasnotbeenwhereitneedstobe. Andtheholethatwehaddugourselvesinwasenormous. Imean,welost4millionjobsinthelastsixmonthsof2008,whenIwasstillrunning--welost4millionjobs. Andalltold,we’velost8millionjobs. Andsoeventhoughwe’vegrownjobsthisyear,wehaven’tbeenabletoyetmakeupforthose8millionjobsthathadbeenlost. Andthat’sanenormouschallenge.
Now,thesecondpartofthechallenge,though,istomakesurethatevenaswe’rediggingourselvesoutofthishole,westartmakingsomebetterdecisionssothat,longterm,wedon’tfindourselvesinthecircumstanceagain,andwestartcreatingthekindofeconomythat’sworkingformiddle-classfamilies.
Soacoupleofthingsthatwedidonthatfront:
Wecuttaxesformiddle-classfamiliesbecauseweunderstandthatpeople’sincomesandwageshavenotgoneup,havenotkeptpacewithincreasesinhealthcare,increasesincollege,andsoforth13.
Thesecondthingthatwefeltwasveryimportantwastostartcreatingsomerulesoftheroadagain. Soinfinancialservices,forexample,wepassedafinancialregulatory(管理的,控制的)billthatmakessurethatwe’renotgoingtohavetaxpayer14bailouts,makessurethatbankshavetooperatealittlebitmoreresponsiblyandtakelessriskswiththemoneythatthey’reinvesting. Andwealsomadesurethatconsumersaretreatedmorefairly--becausepartofwhathappenedinthisfinancialcrisiswaspeopleweregettingmortgagesthattheydidn'tunderstand.
