WhatIHaveLivedFor
Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:
thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,andunbearablepityforthesufferingofmankind.Thesepassions,likegreatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourse,overadeepoceanofanguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.
Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasy---ecstasysogreatthatIwouldhavesacrificedalltherestofmylifeforafewhoursofthisjoy.Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelievesloneliness---thatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousnesslooksovertherimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelessabyss.Ihavesoughtit,finally,becauseintheunionofloveIhaveseen,inamysticminiature,theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.ThisiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,thisiswhat---atlast---Ihavefound.
WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedtounderstandtheheartsofmen,Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine.AndIhavetriedtoapprehendthePythagoreanpowerbywhichnumberholdsawayabovetheflux.Alittleofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveachieved.
Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardtheheavens.Butalwayspitybroughtmebacktoearth.Echoesofcriesofpainreverberateinmyheart.Childreninfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,helplessoldpeopleahatedburdentotheirsons,andthewholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldbe.Ilongtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoosuffer.
Thishasbeenmylife.Ihavefounditworthliving,andIwouldgladlyliveitagainifthechancewereofferedtome.
我为何而生
对爱情的渴望,对知识的探求和对人类苦难不可遏制的同情,是支配我一生的单纯而难以抗拒的三种情感。
这些情感如阵阵飓风,随意地把我吹得飘来荡去,有时吹过深沉痛苦的海洋,直抵绝望的边缘。
我曾经追求过爱情,首先是因为爱情可以给我带来狂喜,这种狂喜竟如此强烈,以至于我常常会为了体验几小时爱的欢娱,而宁愿牺牲生命中的其他一切。
我曾经追求过爱情,其次是因为爱情可以摆脱孤寂—置身于那可怕的孤独之中,那令人战栗的感觉,有时会掠过世界的边缘,把人带到寒气袭人且没有生命的无底深渊。
我曾经追求过爱情,还因为在爱的结合中,我看到了古今圣贤以及诗人们梦想中天堂的神秘缩影。
这也正是我所追寻的人生境界。
虽然它对一般的人类生活也许太美好了,但这正是我透过爱情最终所找到的。
我曾以同样的感情追求知识。
我一直渴望去了解人类的心灵,也渴望知道星星为什么会发光,同时我还想理解毕达哥拉斯的力量,通过它的力量,数驾驭了万物的变化。
我学到了一点点知识,但仅是皮毛而已。
爱情与知识,总是可以把我引领到天堂的境界。
可对于人类苦难的同情经常把我带回现实世界。
那些痛苦的呼唤经常在我内心深处回响激荡。
嗷嗷待哺的孩童,压迫者折磨之下的受害者,给子女造成重负的孤苦无依的老人,以及那充满孤独、贫穷和痛苦的世界,是对人类所应该拥有的生活的无视和嘲弄。
我常渴望能尽自己的微薄之力去减轻这不必要的痛苦,但却无能为力,而我也因此受着痛苦的煎熬。
这就是我的生活,我觉得是值得活的。
如果有谁再给我一次生活的机会,我将欣然接受
这难得的赐予。
TheLawofObedience
TheveryfirstiteminthecreedofcommonsenseisObedience.
Performyourworkwithawholeheart.
Revoltmaybesometimesnecessary,butthemanwhotriestomixrevoltandobedienceisdoomedtodisappointhimselfandeverybodywithwhomhehasdealings.Toflavorworkwithprotestistofailabsolutely.
Whenyourevolt,whyrevoltclimb,hike,getout,defy,telleverybodyandeverythingtogotohades!
Thatdisposesofthecase.Youthusseparateyourselfentirelyfromthoseyouhaveserved,noonemisunderstandsyouhavedeclaredyourself.
Themanwhoquitsindisgustwhenorderedtoperformataskwhichheconsidersmenialorunjustmaybeaprettygoodfellow,butthemalcontentwhotakesyourorderwithasmileandthensecretlydisobeys,isadangerousproposition.Topretendtoobey,andyetcarryinyourheartthespiritofrevoltistodohalf-hearted,slipshodwork.Ifrevoltandobedienceareequalinpower,yourenginewillthenstoponthecenterandyoubenefitnoone,notevenyourself.
Thespiritofobedienceisthecontrollingimpulsethatdominatesthereceptivemindandthehospitableheart.Thereareboatsthatmindthehelmandthereareboatsthatdonot.Thosethatdonotgetholesknockedinthemsoonerorlater.
Tokeepofftherocks,obeytherudder.
Obedienceisnottoslavishlyobeythismanorthat,butitisthatcheerfulmentalstatewhichrespondstothenecessityofthecase,anddoesthethingwithoutanybacktalkunutteredorexpressed.
Themanwhohasnotlearnedtoobeyhastroubleaheadofhimeverystepoftheway.Theworldhasitinforhimcontinually,becausehehasitinfortheworld.
Themanwhodoesnotknowhowtoreceiveordersisnotfittoissuethemtoothers.Buttheindividualwhoknowshowtoexecutetheordersgivenhimispreparingthewaytoissueorders,andbetterstilltohavethemobeyed.
服从
人生的第一信条是:
学会服从。
在工作中,你必须做到全心投入。
当然,我们必定要有做出反抗的时候。
不过,如果一个人始终在反抗与服从这两种情绪挣扎,并试图将两者混合在一起,那么他不仅会使自己感到失望,也会使身边的人感到失望。
如果一个人对工作充满抵触情绪,那么他必定会一事无成。
当你的内心充满了愤懑的情绪时,千万不要将这种情绪发泄到他人身上!
只有这样你才不会众叛亲离,才不会被他人误解。
否则的话只会使事情变得更糟。
如果一个人面对繁重的工作依然能够泰然处之,那么他必定是个好员工;如果一个人表面上笑着接受你的命令,背地里却不服从,那么这种情况显然很危险。
如果你假装服从,而内心充满抵触情绪,那么你必定会对工作表现得漫不经心。
更何况,当服从与抵触情绪共同出现时,你的能力必定会被这两种力量所抵消。
这一结果对任何人而言都不是件好事。
我们必须通过一种自制力,使自己的思想与内心完全接受服从心理。
一些人的思想之舟中,有一个舵手,而另外一些人的思想之舟却没有舵手来掌握方向。
显然,后者极易覆舟。
因而,我们必须按照“舵手”的要求去做,这样才能够避开暗礁险滩。
服从并不是指让我们像奴隶。
那样俯首帖耳,而是要以一种愉悦的心情来接受必须去做的事情。
这样一来,当我们去做某件事时才不会表现得闷不吭声或喋喋不休。
一个不懂得服从的人必定会四处碰壁—他与世界为敌,世界必定与他为敌!
一个不懂得服从的人根本不配让他服从自己。
反之,越是懂得服从的重要
性的人,越有权利得到他人的服从。

Charactermakescharacterintheassociationsoflifefasterthananythingelse.Puritybegetspurity,likebegetslike;andthisfactmakesthechoiceofcompanioninearlylifemoreimportanteventhanthatofteachersandguardians.
Itistruethatwecannotalwayschooseallofourcompanions,somearethrustuponusbybusinessorthesocialrelationsoflife,wedonotchoosethem,wedonotenjoythem;andyet,wehavetoassociatewiththemmoreorless.Theexperienceisnotaltogetherwithoutcompensation,iftherebeprincipleenoughinustobearthestrain.Still,inthemain,choiceofcompanionscanbemade,andmustbemade.Itisnotbestornecessaryforayoungpersontoassociatewith“Tom,Dick,andHarry”withoutforethoughtorpurpose.Somefixedrulesaboutthecompanyheorshekeepsmustbeobserved.Thesubjectshouldbeuttermostinthethoughts,andcanvassedoften.
Companionshipiseducation,goodornot;itdevelopsmanhoodorwomanhood,highorlow;itliftssoulupwardordragsitdownward;itministerstovirtueorvice.Sowvirtue,andtheharvestwillbevirtue,Sowvice,andtheharvestwillbevice.Goodcompanionshipshelpustosowvirtue;evilcompanionshipshelpustosowvice.
选择朋友
一个好友胜过一笔财富,因为钱财买不到人的某些品德因素,而正是这些因素,使友情成为一种恩惠。
最好的朋友是那些比我们更睿智、更出色的人,我们会受到他们的智慧和美德的激励,从而使我们的行为更加高尚。

”在社会交往中,品性对品性的塑造胜过其他任何因素。
纯洁的品格会培养纯洁的品格,爱好会引发相同的爱好。

无论是有益还是有害,友谊就是一种教育。
它可以培育高贵或卑微的品格;它可以升华灵魂,也可以使之沉沦;它可以滋生美德,也可以助长邪恶。
播种美德,就会收获美德;播种邪恶,就会收获邪恶。
有益的友谊帮助我们播种美德,而有害的友谊则使我们播种邪恶。

Man'syouthisawonderfulthing:
itissofullofanguishandofmagicandhenevrcomestoknowitasitis,untilithasgonefromhimforever.Itisthethinghecannotbeartolose,itisthethingwhosepassinghewatcheswithinfinitesorrowandregret,itisthethingwhoselosswithasadandsecretjoy,thethinghewouldneverwillinglyreliveagain,ifitcouldberestoredtohimbyanymagic.
Whyisthis?
Thereasonisthatthestrangeandbittermiracleoflifeisnowhereelsesoevidentasinouryouth.Andwhatistheessenceofthatstrangeandbittermiracleoflifewhichwefeelsopoignant,sounutterable,withsuchabitterpainandjoy,whenweareyoung?
Itisthis:
thatbeingrich,wearesopoor;thatbeingmighty,wecanyethavenothing;thatseeing,breathig,smelling,tastingallaroundusthewealthandgloryofthisearth,feelingwithanintolerablecertitudethatthewholestructureoftheenchantedlife–themostfortunate,wealthy,good,andhappylifethatanymanhaseverknownisoursatonce,immediatelyandforever,themomentthatwechoosetotakeastep,orstretchahand,weyetknowthatwecanreallykeep,hold,take,andpossessforever-nothing.Allpasses;nothinglasts:
themomentthatweputourhanduponit,itmeltsawaylikesmoke,isgoneforever,andthesnakeiseatingatourheartagain;weseethenwhatweareandwhatourlivesmustcometo.
Ayoungmanissostrong,somad,socertain,andsolost.Hehaseverythingandheisabletousenothing.Hehurlsthegreatshoulderofhisstrengthforeveragainstphantasmalbarriers,heisawavewhosepowerexplodesinlostmid–oceansundertimelessskies,here-achesouttogripafumeofpaintedsmoke,hewantsall,feelsthethirstandpowerforeverything,andfinallygetsnothing.Intheend,heisdestroyedbyhisownstrength,devouredbyhisownhunger,impoverishedbyhisownwealth.Thoughtlessofmoneyortheaccumulationofmaterialpossessions,heisnonethelessdefeatedintheendbyhisown.
Andthatisthereasonwhy,whenyouthisgone,everymanwilllookbackuponthatperiodofhislifewithinfinitesorrowandregret.Itisthebittersorrowandregretofamanwhoknowsthatoncehehadagreattalentandwastedit,ofamanwhoknowsthatoncehehadagreattreasureandgotnothingfromit,ofamanwhoknowsthathehadstrengthenoughforeverythingandneverusedit.

青春年少的时候根本不知青春为何物,直到青春一去不复返了才对青春有了真正的认识。
