inthepast60years.Leavingrubbishalongthewayhelpsclimberskeeptheirbagslightsotheyhaveenergytoreachthetop.“TherubbishprobleminMountEverestisnotnew,”Burlakotisays.“Whenthepeoplestartedtoclimbthemountain,theystartedtoleavetheirgarbagethere.”Theyhaveleftbehindcans,tents,foodwrappers,andequipment.Lastyear,climberscarrieddownatotaloffourtonsofrubbish.
ThenewrulecameintoeffectinAprilof2014.Tomakesureitisfollowed,climberswillhavetodepositmoneybeforetheclimb.Oncetheyclimbbackdownthemountain,officialswillcheckclimbersatareturncamptomakesuretheyhavetherequired18poundsofrubbish.Iftheydo,theirmoneywillbereturnedtothem.Iftheydonot,climberswillnotreceivetheirdepositandtheywillnotbegivenapermitthenexttimetheywanttoclimbEverest.

Severalofthevictimsreportedbeingtakenawayfromtheirbedsorcarsbyaliencreaturesaroundfourfeethigh,withlongandleanarmsandlegsandoversizedheads,Frenchsaid.Somemensaidtheywereforcedtotakepainfulmedicalexaminationsbythealiens.
Manyofthealienexperiencescouldbeexplainedbysleepparalysis,aconditioninwhichapersonisawakeandawareofthesurroundingsbutisunabletomove.Sleepparalysisoftenleadstohallucinations—theexperienceofseeingorfeelingsomethingthatisnotreallythereand40percentofpeopleexperiencethestateatleastonceintheirlives,Frenchsaid.Arichimaginationwasalsoatplay.Severalofthealienvictimsweremorelikelytofantasizeandreportedtohaveseenghosts(幽灵)andhaveunnaturalabilities.
