Surveyofstudies
EzraPound,anAmericanpoetandtranslator,isaninitiatorofImagism—anAnglo-Americanmovementinpoetryatthebeginningofthetwentiethcentury.Asatranslator,Pound’sEnglishrenderingsofChineseclassicalpoemsownextremelyhighpositioninthehistoryofliterature,butmeanwhile,theyarealsoaheatedlydebatedfieldinthetranslationcircle,particularlyhisslimanthologyentitledCathay,translationsof19Chineseclassicalpoems,whichmakesitsfirstappearancein1915.Itsphilologicalerrorsoftenfallundersomecritics’attack,whilethecreativetranslationinimagetransformationanditsdistinctforeignflavorwinothers’praise.Untilnow,manyChinesescholarshavedonelotsofresearchesonPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoems.
ZhouWeimadehercommentonPound’stranslationstrategiesinCathayin2004.Inherview,CathayisananthologyofsuccessfullytranslatedpoemsjudgedintheSkopostheorieframework.ItsadequacytoPound’stranslationbrief,thewarmreceptionbytheWesternreadersanditsinfluenceonAmericanliteratureallprovethesuccessofCathay.Itisfurtherdrawnthatpoetrytranslationisanallusion,thetranslator,undertheguidanceoftranslationbrief,willandshoulddecidewhattotranslateandhowtotranslate,whichelementstobepreservedandwhichtoberemoved.Thusatranslatedtextcanbeadequatetothetranslationbrief.Astoevaluatetheachievementsofatranslatedtext,linguistic“equivalence”isnolongertheonlyyardstick.Itsadequacytotranslationbrief,thefulfillmentoftheintendedSkopos,anditsinfluenceonagivencultureshouldallbetakenintoconsideration.Translationcriticismshouldextenditsscopetocovermorefactorsrelevanttotranslationactivities.
In2005,WangGuiminginvestigatedPound’sconceptionandhiscreativetranslationofChineseclassicalpoems.HebelievesEzraPoundhascontributedsignificantlytothegrowthoftranslationworldwideandgivenconsiderableimpetustothedevelopmentofmodernistpoetryinEnglish,inhiscapacityasbothatheoristandapractitioneroftranslation,particularlywithhiscreativetranslationofChineseclassicalpoemsintoEnglish.
Intheyearof2007,HeYanancastanewlightonEzraPound’screativenessinhistranslationCathayofChineseclassicalpoemsbyanelaboratedanalysisintheperspectiveoffunctionalistapproachfocusingontranslationandre-creation.HealsoholdsthatCathayhasenjoyedenormouspopularityintheWestandassumedauniquepositioninthehistoryofEnglishtranslationofChineseclassicalpoems.
During2008,ZhengShaoyanpointsoutthatthebirthanddevelopmentofimagismpoemsareundergreatinfluenceofChineseclassicalculture,especiallyChinesepoems.ShealsobelievesthatChineseclassicalculturehasremarkableimpactonPoundintheprocessofhistranslationofChineseclassicalpoemsandlearningofChinese.What’smore,sheholdsthatalthoughthisoutstandingpoetandscholarmakesmisreadingandmisinterpretationwhichcannotbeignoredbecauseofculturaldifferencesduetodifferentculturalbackgroundintheEastandtheWest,Pound’swisdomandintelligenceisstillevidenttobeseen.
XuMinandShuQizhi(2008)studiedmisreadingofPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoemsintheperspectiveofhermeneutics.TheymakeanexplanationofPound’smisreadingintheperspectiveofhermeneuticsprejudiceandmisinterpretationtheoryandexploretheinternalandexternalreasonsofPound’smisreadingintheselectionoftextsandthetranslationandpracticeofimagerypoems,concludingthatPound’smisreadingistheresultofdualeffectofsocial,culturalfactorsandtheaimofthetranslator.TheysuggestthatPound’screativemisreadingshouldbeshownapositiveattitudetointheperspectiveofpromotingculturalexchangeandstrengtheningcommunicationandintegrationofwesternandeasternculture.
WangJinglingalsostudiedPound’stranslationofChinesepoetryfromtheperspectiveofInter-Theoryinthesameyear.Sheclaimsthatfromtheperspectiveoftranslator’sintersubjectivity,Poundconvertstheinteractionbetweenthetranslationsubjectandobjectintothatbetweenthetranslatorandoriginaltextwriter,patron,orothertranslator.Shebringsabouttheideathatfromtheperspectiveoftargettext’sintertextuality,Pounddoesn’tconfinehimselftotheoriginaltextbutreconstructsit;whathehasfinishedistheinter-dialoguebetweenthetargettextandoriginaltext,quotationsorotherrenderings.Pound’stranslationofChinesepoetrycanbeconsideredasagoodexampleofinteraction,nomatterinthehistoryoftranslationorhistoryofculturalexchange.
In2008,ZhaiPinganalyzedPound’smisinterpretationintheperspectiveofReceptionAesthetics.ShetriestofindthereasonofPound’smisinterpretationandillustratesthatPound’smisinterpretationisinducedbyintegratedvariablesrelevanttothevertical-horizontalreceptionform,suchasaestheticsubject(translators)andreceptionsubject(targetlanguagereaders)andreceptionenvironment(nationalpsychologyoftargetlanguage).
BecausepeoplearenotfamiliarwithHorizonofExpectation,andithasnotreceivedenoughattention,letalonetheresearchonimagetransformationinChineseclassicalpoemstranslatedbyPoundinthisperspective.Asaresult,inChina,theongoingstudyonthistopicisstillnotsystematicandcomprehensive,whichblocksandinfluencespeople’sobjectiveviewonPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoems.
AlthoughmanyresearchersinChinaandinforeigncountrieshavesetfootintheanalysisofPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoemsintoEnglish,eachofthemapproachesitinhisownwaywithoutkeepingabreastofwhatothersaredoingonthesameresearchobjectandtherestillexistlimitationsofthestudyofPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoems.Theformerstudieswhichhaven’tcombinedimagetransformationinPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoemswithHorizonofExpectationmaycausemanymisunderstandingswhichcannotmakepeopleachieveabetteranddeeperunderstandingofPound’stranslationobjectively.SothisstudycombinesthesetwoaspectstocarryoutasystematicstudyofimagetransformationinChineseclassicalpoemstranslatedbyPoundinthisnewperspective.Besides,theauthorintendstohighlighttheimportanceandfeaturesofimageintheprocessofpoetrytranslation.
Thesisstatement
AlotofresearcheshavebeendoneonEzraPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoemsintoEnglish.ButthestudyofthishasseldombeenassociatedwithHorizonofExpectation,letalonePound’stranslation.SoitisnecessarytogivearesearchonimagetransformationinPound’stranslationofChineseclassicalpoemsintoEnglishfromtheperspectiveofHorizonofExpectation.
ThisstudyaimstoillustratethatPound’screativetranslationcaterstothehorizonofexpectationatthaterathroughanalyzingimagetransformationinhistranslationofChineseclassicalpoems,especiallyinCathay.Thethesisconsistsoffiveparts.
Thefirstpartisanintroduction.ItshowsreaderssomethingbriefaboutPoundandbringsaboutthetopic.
ThesecondpartmainlyprovidesanoverviewofEzrapound,Imagism,HorizonofExpectationandChineseclassicalpoems.
ThethirdpartanalyzeshowPoundachievesimagetransformationinhistranslationofChineseclassicalpoems.Thispartmainlytalksabouttwomethods:
