Contemporarysocietyischaracterisedbyarapidrateofsocialandtechnologicalchangeandthisisreflectedintheworkplace,wherefactorssuchasdownsizingandtheintroductionofnewtechnologymakeitnecessaryforworkerstobehighlyflexibleiftheywanttoremainemployable.SuchflexibilitymightincludeareadinesstoretrainordiversifyintootherareasandIthinkthatstudentsarebestpreparedforthisthroughamulti-disciplinaryeducation.
Anotherpointconcernstherapidriseingraduatenumbersthathastakenplaceinrecentyears.Insomecountriesthisincreasehasoccurredatagreaterratethantheeconomy’sabilitytogeneratenewemploymentandundersuchconditionsit’snotunusualtofind500graduatesapplyingforoneposition.Facedwithhavingtochoosebetweentheseapplicantsanemployerwillprobablylookforqualitiesotherthanbasictechnicalcompetenceandtherightqualifications.Theseotherqualitiesmightincludegeneralknowledge,goodcommunicationskills,acreativeapproachtoproblemsolvingandanabilitytotakeinitiative,allofwhichcanbedevelopedthroughabroad,multi-disciplinaryapproachtocollegeeducation.
Inconclusion,itcouldbearguedthatthesameskillsandqualitieswhichhavealwaysbeenvaluedintheworkplacewillremainvaluedinthefuture,butperhapsevenmoresoduetotheever-decreasingvalueofacollegedegree.

Oneargumentinfavourofmixedabilityclassesisbasedontheideathattheypromoteequalityandsocialharmonyamongstudentsofdifferentbackgroundsinandoutoftheclassroom.Suchanapproachstemsfromstudiesthathaveshownthatstreamedorgradedclassestendtoconsist,atthetoplevel,ofstudentswhocomefromthedominantandwealthierculturalgroup,andatlowerlevels,oflessaffluentstudentsfromculturalminoritiesorimmigrantfamilies.Somesaythisleadstosocialsegregationanddoesnotreflectthetrueabilitiesofsomepoorerstudents,whoachievelowresultsmerelybecausetheyareconstantlygroupedwithlowachievers.
Thoseinsupportofstreamedclassessayit’sbetterforallstudentstobesurroundedbyothersofsimilarabilitybecauseitnotonlygenerateshealthycompetitionbutalsohelpstopreventthelowself-esteemthatissometimesgeneratedinmixedabilityclasseswhenlow-achieverscomparetheirownresultswiththehigherscoresoftopstudents.Anotherpointconcernsthenegativeeffectthatmixedabilityclasseshaveongoodstudents,whoseresultshavebeenshowntosufferwhenmovedintoclasseswithstudentsofmuchlowerabilitythanthemselves.
MyownexperienceinmixedabilityclasseswhileastudentathighschoolwasmostlynegativeandIdefinitelylostinterestindoingwellwhennolongersurroundedbyotherbrightstudentsasIhadbeeninearlieryears.MyteachersalsoseemedtobecomelessinspiredwhenfacedwiththeimpossiblechallengeofdealingwithstudentsofhighlymixedabilityandforthesereasonsIpresentlythinkthatmixedabilityclassesshouldbeavoidedwheneverpossible.

Somepeoplesaythatparentsshoulddisciplinetheirchildren’sbehavioursandtellthemwhatisrightandwrong,whileothersbelievethatschoolsshouldtaketheresponsibilitytodoso.Whatisyouropinion?
Theessentialfoundationsoflanguage,beliefandmoralsensibilityhavealreadybeenlaiddownbythetimeachildisoldenoughtogotoschool,havingbeenpassedonbyparentswhoseinfluenceintheseareaswillremainparamountthroughoutlife.ForthisreasonIbelievechildrenwillalwayslooktotheirparentsformoralguidanceandparentswillalwaysserveasthefinalauthorityonissuesconcerningdisciplineandacceptablemodesofbehaviour.Whetherornotthisishowit“should”beisbesidethepoint,becausetheprimacyofthisparent-childrelationshipisacceptedbyalmosteverycultureintheworldandcertainareasofbeliefandmorality-religionandsexuality,forinstance-aregenerallyconsideredtoliewithinthefamilydomain.
Ifoneacceptsthatschoolsinmanycountrieswouldbeveryhesitanttointrudeintotheseareasoffamilybusiness,thenitfollowsthattheirmandateforimposingdisciplineandprovidingmoralinstructionisstrictlylimitedtocertainareasthatareconsideredbysocietytoformpartofaschool’sresponsibility.Examplesofsuchareasarehowachildperformsacademically,orwhetherornothisbehaviourwhileatschoolconformstosociallyacceptedstandards.However,evenintheseareasschoolscanonlygosofarandwillhaveto,atacertainpoint,consultwithparentsinordertoagreeonacourseofactionthatisacceptabletobothparties.
Inconclusion,schoolscertainlyhaveaparttoplayinreinforcingandexemplifyingmoralcodes,butultimatelyparentsareresponsiblefordisciplineandguidanceintheseareas.

Inalldevelopedandsomedevelopingcountries,computersandcalculatorshavebecomesuchcommonplaceitemsthatitwouldactuallybeverydifficulttolimittheiruse.However,itmightbepossibletolimittheiruseintheclassroom,especiallyduringprimaryschoolyearswhenchildrenaretaughttowritebyhandandsolvemathematicalproblemsonpaper.Bykeepingthesetasksamandatory,regularlyassessedpartoftheprimaryschoolcurriculum,whilesimultaneouslykeepingcomputersandcalculatorsoutoftheclassroom,childrencouldatleastbetaughtbasiccompetenceintheseareas.Beyondthisoneadvantage,however,Ithinkitwouldbeamistaketolimittheiruse,fortheadvantagesofthesetoolsfaroutweightheirdisadvantagesandbeingabletooperatethemisnowadaysanessentialskillinitself.Tobeabletouseakeyboard,sendemails,writereportsandproducespreadsheetsareallskillsthatarebecomingincreasinglyimportantnotonlyatschoolandworkbutalsointherealmofeverydaylife.,andIbelievethatthebestwayforchildrentolearnsuchskillsisthroughthefamiliaritythatcomesfromhavingunlimitedaccesstocomputers.Itwouldbeaseriousdisadvantageindeedtonotbeabletouseacomputeruponfinishingschoolandenteringtheworkplace.
Regardingcalculators,Idon’tbelievetheyhaveanynegativeeffectonachild’smathematicalabilityatall,giventhatmathsisprimarilyaconceptualsubjectinwhichtheconceptsinvolvedneedtobeunderstoodwhenusingacalculatororsolvingproblemsonpaper.Infact,thetime-savingqualitiesofcalculatorscanbeseenasanaidtomathematicalprogressandthesameistrueforanysubjectsinwhichcomputersplayapart.
