First,hislifewassavedbythepitifultestimonyofabeautifulyoungwoman。
Anyonewouldgladlyhavemarriedthisbeautifultoo-good-to-be-true-womanhewedded。
Itislaterseen,however,thatthismanshouldhavemarriedherevenifshewereuglyassin。
Thiswasnotthecasethough,andhemarriedabeautifulwoman,whohadanadmirerwhowasadeadringerforherhusband,wasaloser,andwouldgivehislifetokeepherfrompain,allofwhichreallyesinhandywhenherhubbyisonhiswaytotheguillotine。
Thisisnotthestoryofamanwithmultipleguardianangels,butratherthatofacharacterinCharlesDickens’novelATaleofTwoCities。
Askepticcouldeasilyseethisasanunbelievable,idealisticandoverratednovelthatistoofar-fetched。
Anunbiasedreader,however,canseethatthisisastoryofloveandhate,eachmakingupthebare-bonesofthenovelsothatonemustlookcloselytoseeDickens’biases,attemptsatpersuasion,andunbelievableplot-lines,someofwhicharespawnedfromDickens’loveandhate,andsomeofwhichloveandhateareusedtodevelop。
Themorelifelessofthecharacterswearesupposedtolike--theManettes,Darnay,Lorry--playtheirpartsintheidyllicfashionDickensandlike-mindedreaderswant,afashionmadeinflexiblebycircumstancesandpurposes。
“Circumstancesandpurposes”refersinlargeparttoDickens’stateofmindandobjective。
Dickens’intrusive,unusuallyeditorialpointofview,withreferencesto“I”anddeviationsfromnarrationformonologue,revealsthenovel’sslaverytotheteachingsofhismorals--orperhapshisownslaverytothemoralsofhistimeandProtestantism。
