ThanksgivingisassociatedwiththetimewhenEuropeansfirstcametoNorthAmerica.In1620theshiptheMayflowerarrived,bringingabout150peoplewhotodayareusuallycalledPilgrims.Theyarrivedatthebeginningofaveryhardwinterandcouldnotfindenoughtoeat,somanyofthemdied.ButinthefollowingsummerNativeAmericansshowedthemwhatfoodsweresafetoeat,sothattheycouldsavefoodforthenextwinter.TheyheldabigcelebrationtothankGodandtheNativeAmericansforthefactthattheyhadsurvived.
3)SpecialMeal
TodaypeoplecelebrateThanksgivingtoremembertheseearlydays.ThemostimportantpartofthecelebrationisatraditionaldinnerwithfoodsthatcomefromNorthAmerica.Themealincludesturkey,sweetpotatoes(alsocalledyams)andcranberries,whicharemadeintoakindofsauceorjelly.Theturkeyisfilledwithstuffingordressing,andmanyfamilieshavetheirownspecialrecipe.Dessertispumpkinmadeintoapie.

OnThanksgivingtherearespecialtelevisionprogramsandsportsevents.AnumberofprofessionalanduniversityfootballgamesareplayedonThanksgivingDay.InNewYorkthereistheMacy’sThanksgivingDayParadewhenalonglineofpeoplewearingfancycostumesmarchthroughthestreetswithlargeballoonsintheshapeofimaginarycharacters.ThanksgivingisconsideredthebeginningoftheChristmasperiod,andthenextdaymanypeoplegoouttoshopforChristmaspresents.

3)TheUnitedStatesCoastGuard
TheUnitedStatesCoastGuardistheUSmilitaryservicethatiscontrolledbytheUSDepartmentofTransportationbutbecomespartoftheUSNavyduringawar.Itwasestablishedin1915.TheCoastGuardstopsshipssuspectedofcarryingdrugsandotherillegalgoods,andcanmakearrests.Italsokeepswatchtoseethatotherlawsoftheseaareobeyed,rescuesshipsindangerandhasaweatherservice
