Results
Atbaseline,themajorityofdaylaborerswhoparticipatedinthisstudyreportedgreatconcernaboutthehazardsoftheirworkandwerereceptivetolearningabouthealthandsafetydespitelimitedinfluenceoveremployers.Changesfrombaselinetofollow-uprevealedstatisticallysignificantdifferencesintheuseofcertaintypesofPPE(hardhats,workbootswithsteeltoes,safetyharnesses,andvisiblesafetyvests),andinthefrequencyofself-protectiveworkpractices(e.g.,tryingtofindoutmoreaboutjobhazardsonyourown).Therewasalsoasuggestivedecreaseinself-reportedinjuries(receivinganinjuryatworkseriousenoughthatyouhadtostopworkingfortherestoftheday)post-trainingbasedonsmallnumbers.Sixty-sixpercentofworkerssurveyedpost-trainingreportedsharinginformationfromtheirsafetyworkbookwithfriendsandco-workers.Focusgroupsandinterviewresultsgenerallyconfirmedthequantitativefindings.
Conclusions
Participatory,peerledtrainingtailoredtotheneedsofconstructiondaylaborersmayhaveapositiveeffectonLatinoimmigrantworkers’attitudes,workpractices,andselfreportedinjuryrates,butmajorchangeswouldrequireemployerengagement.
