5D-Day,thecodenamegiventothedayofinvasion,wasoriginallyscheduledfor5June1944.Thisdatehadbeenarrivedatbyconsideringtwofactors--moonlightandtide.Thehouroftheinvasionwouldneedtobenearsunrise,whentheseabornetroopswouldhavearisingtide.Thiswouldenablethemtolandclosetotheobstaclesthathadbeenplacedtohindertheirlandingwithoutcomingashoreontopofthem.Theparatroopersneededafullmoonforvisibility.Thedayswiththepropertide-moonlightformulaclosesttothetargetdatewere5,6and7June.ThefifthwaschosenforD-Daytoallowasafetymarginincasetheattackneededtobepostponed.
代号为D日的进攻开始日最初定在1944年6月5日。
选定这一天考虑了两个因素—月光与潮汐。

8Meanwhile,criticalerrorsbytheGermansideallowedthemtobetakencompletelybysurprise.Duetothebadweather,theGermannavycancelleditsusualpatroloftheEnglishChannel.Also,apracticedrillscheduledforJune6wascalledoff.TheGermanmeteorologicalserviceswereunawareofthebreakintheweather.Ontheeveoftheattack,manyofthetopGermanleaderswereabsentfromtheircommands.Rommel,thegeneralinchargeofthecoastaldefences,wasinGermanyvisitinghiswifeonherbirthday,andseveralofficersweresomedistanceawayinRennesorontheirwaythereforawar-gameexercise.

45a.m.Theairattackfollowed.Thenavalandairbombardmentsweredesignedtodestroythebeachgunsandobstacles,pindowntheenemyandprovideshelterforthegroundtroopsontheopenbeachesbymakingcraters.Both,however,largelyfailedintheirobjectives.Weatherconditionshadimproved,buttheywerenotperfect.Becauseofpoorvisibilitycausedbylowcloudcover,itwasdecidedthatthebomberswoulddelaythereleaseofbombs30secondstoavoidhittingtheassaultingtroops.Asaresult,thebombsfellinlandandmissedtheirtargets.Althoughthenavalbombardmentwasmoreaccurate,itwasnotmuchmoreeffectiveagainstthehardenedGermangunemplacements.
凌晨5:
45左右,舰炮轰击开始了。
空中轰击紧随其后。
舰炮和空中轰击的目的在于摧毁海滩上的火力网与障碍物,用火力把敌人困住,并在开阔的海滩上炸出弹坈,以此为地面部队提供掩体。
但舰炮和空中轰击大都没能实现自己的目标。
天气状况有所好转,但仍相当不理想。
低空密密的云层致使能见度极差,于是决定轰炸机延迟30秒钟投弹,以避免误伤进攻部队。
结果,炸弹都落在内地,错过了目标。
舰炮轰击虽然较为准确,但德国人加强了大炮阵地,所以也未能充分发挥作用。
16Theweatheralsowaspartiallyresponsibleforcausingsomeoftheassaultcrafttomisstheirassignedlandingareas.Additionally,manyofthelandingcraftandamphibioustanksfounderedintheroughsea.IntheOmahaarea,mostofthecraftcarryingartilleryandtanksintendedtosupporttheincomingtroopssankinthehighwaves.
气候也是导致一些强击艇未能驶抵指定的登陆点的部分因素。
此外,许多登陆艇和水陆两用坦克在汹涌的大海中沉没。
在奥马哈区域,装载着用以支援后续部队的大炮坦克的船只大都在巨浪中沉没。
AtUtahBeach,however,astrangestrokeofgoodfortuneoccurredwhentheassaultcraftencounteredasoutherlycurrentthatcausedthemtolandinthewrongsector.TheGermanshorebatteriesthatwouldhavecontestedalandingintheoriginalareawouldundoubtedlyhavetakenaheavytoll.Thelandingatthenewsectorwasvirtuallyunopposed.
