WhenIfirstmarriedmywife,IlivedandworkedinOntario,movingfromsmalltowntobigcityasIpursuedmycareerasaradiobroadcaster.Wehavetwosons,bothofwhomwereborninTorontoandmovedwithustoOttawa.Theywenttoschool,grewupthere,andthenpursuingtheirowncareers,theyalsomoved.OnewenttoCanada’seastcoastnearacitycalledHalifaxandtheotherheadedtothewestcoastVancouver.Wehadadilemma;
wewereleftinthemiddle.
Theproblemwasn’tpressingatthetimebecauseIwasstillworkingandmyjobwasinOttawa.However,aswebegantoconsideringretirementwewonderedwhereweshouldspendourfinalyears.Wecouldn’tbeclosetobothofourchildrenandtherewasnotellingwhentheymightagainrelocate.Forseveralreasons,wesettledonasmalltownonVancouverIsland.Atleastwewereclosetooneofthem.However,hehadhissightssetonHollywoodand,whenanopportunitypresenteditself,heleftCanadaandheadedsouth.So,therewewere,andstillare,inourlittlewestcoasttown.Weloveourlittlecomerofparadise(乐园)butwepaidaprice.Wehavenotbeenthereforsomeimportanteventssuchasthebirthsoftwoofourgrandchildren.Wehavemissedwatchingthemgrowup,backyardbarbecues,andthenormal,noisyhouseholds.Ourhome,whilecomfortable,isalsoveryquiet.
Everyfallwetraveltoseethechildrenandtrytospendaweekormorewiththemandwemaketheevenlongertriptoseeourgrandchildren,whoarenowteenagers,actuallyintotheirtwenties.Theyseldomcometovisitus.Thedistancesarejusttoogreatanditiscostly.
Fortunately,bothourboysaredoingwellandourgrandchildrenaregrowingstraightandtall.Weloveallofthemandtheyloveusbuttherealityisthattheydon’tneedus.Wehavedoneourjobsandatleastintheory,wecansitback,relaxandenjoythetimeremainingtous.Infact,we’rehappybutthereweretimesIthinkaboutthethingswedidn’tsee.Theyhavealsomissedhavingasetofparentsandgrandparentsaround.
