Text 10
North and South is a British televisiondrama produced by BBC One. The main
character, Margaret Hale, is from southern England and moves with her family tothe
North.(17)The series followsthe family as it adjusts to their new town’s customs andsocialissues. The Hales met another familyoflower class, and they had to rethink about many
things. Theshow isbased on the Victorian novelof the same name, written by
Elizabeth Gaskellin 1855.(18) North and South was turned into a TV series by Sandy
Welch in 2001 and isdirected by Brian Percival. Although Sandy made small changes to
the story, the plot remainedmostly true to the novel. Filming began in 2004 in the Scottish
city of Edinburgh, whichstill has much of its Victorian architecture. (19)Even though
the BBC didn’t advertisethe show as much as it didfor other shows, it quickly became
a huge success. (20)Thereaction was a surprise to the BBC, who then released a DVD
of the show in 2005.
