o,iscomprisedofamuseumbuilding,exhibitionareas,andaplaza,withinalargermasterplan.Thebuildingformderivesfromthespatialconcept“underthesky”/“underthesea”.Aconcave“underthesky”shapecreatesacentralgatheringplaza,opentoskyandsea,withthehorizoninthedistance.Theconvexstructuralceilingformsthe“underthesea”exhibitionspaces.Thisconceptgeneratesauniqueprofileandformforthebuilding,andthroughitsinsertionandefficientsiteutilization,theprojectintegratesseamlesslyintothesurroundinglandscape.

TheMusicMuseummasterplandesignproposestounifythecampusthroughthevoidsbetweenbuildings–likeacaesurainmusic.Theschemeidentifiesfivevoidsbetweenthebuildingstoformtheoverallmorphologyofthecampus.Thefirstvoidistheancientgardenwithexistingtrees.ThesecondvoidisthenewMusicPlazawithreflectivepondandarrivalspace.Thethird,fourth,andfifthvoidsutilizethespacesbetweenbuildingswithdifferentprograms,providingopenareasformusicperformance,scholarlydiscussions,cafes,restaurants,andrecreation.Thesevoidsareformedbysimplewoodenpergolas,whichharkbacktoSongDynastyarchitecture,whenthefirstwoodconstructionstandardswerepublished.
ThenewMusicPlazaisfloodedinathinlayerofwater.Skylightsatthebottomofthepondbringlightdowntoalargegalleryspacebelow.Thisspaceisflexibleandthereflectingpondcanbedrainedtoaccommodatealargeraudience.
ThenewMusicMuseumisbasedontheideaofthe“EightSounds”intraditionalChinesemusic:
silk,bamboo,wood,stone,metal,clay,gourd,andhide.Whiletheexteriorofthebuildingiscladinthesamewoodasthepergolas,theeightvolumesareeachconstructedfromoneoftheseeightmaterials.Eachvolumecontainsachamberwherevisitorsnotonlyhearthemusicbutcanexperienceitsproduction.

Conceptually,theplanisbasedonthebalanceofShan-Shui(mountainandwater)tostrengththerelationshipbetweenthelandandtheWestLake.
Twolargeverticalcomponents,theEarthandWater
Tower,anchortheplanandactasaverticalgatheringofthewaterandmountainzone.
Thesetowersserveastheorganizingfactorasonetowerbranchesnorthtowardtheoxygensectorwhiletheotherbranchessouthtowardtheboilersector.
CollaboratingwithTranssolarhaspushedtheprojecttothenextlevelasthenewwaterelementsinthemasterplanwillnotonlybecomeanetworkthatconnectsthesixlargerscaleelements,butwillalsohelpcleantheexistingindustrialcanalsandprovideageothermalheatsource.
Intheoxygensector,LaternTowers,whichtakeinspirationfromtheoldstonelanterns
inWestLake,
springfromrecreationalwaterstrips.
Photovoltaicglasscurtainwallsgatherthesun’senergy
duringtheday,whileatnightoneelevationofeachtowerglows,reflectingtheday’senergyinthe

Inthesouthplan,a3DParkcomposedofafacetlandscapedsurfaceispuncturedforlight.
Inadditiontoaddinganaturaltouchtothearea,theform’sstructure–adodecahedrontruss–containsahotel,restaurants
andcafes.
Themasterplanwillincludesmallerformswithintheminimallyrestoredshellsoftheoxygenandboilerplants.
Thesecafes,bars,andexhibitspaceswillbeacompliationofdifferentartists’andarchitects’expressions.
QINGDAOCULTUREANDARTCENTER(2013)
ThewinningdesignforthenewCultureandArtCenterbeginswithaconnectiontoQingdao.ThelinearformoftheJiaozhouBayBridge—theworld’slongestbridgeoverwater—iscarriedintothelargesite,intheformofaLightLoop,whichcontainsgalleryspacesandconnectsallaspectsofthelandscapeandpublicspaces.TheraisedLightLoopallowsmaximumporosityandmovementacrossthesite,andpermitsnaturalsoundboundbreezesthatblowinofftheoceantoflowacrossthesite.
SetwithinthemasterplanareArtIslands,orYishudao,whichtaketheformofthreesculptedcubes,andfoursmalllandscapeartislandsthatformoutdoorsculpturegardens.Fiveterracedreflectingpoolsanimatethelandscapeandbringlighttolevelsbelowviaskylights.
TheLightLoopandYishudaoconceptsfacilitatetheshapingofpublicspace.Agreatcentralsquareforlargegatheringsisatthecenterofthesiteoverlookingalargewatergarden.TheModernArtMuseumshapesthecentralsquare.ThePublicArtsMuseumformsthemainexperienceofentryfromthesouth.TheNorthYishudaocontainstheClassicArtMuseum,withahotelatitstoplevels,andtheSouthYishudao,whichfloatsoverthelargesouthreflectingpool,holdsthePerformingArtsProgram.
IntheLightLoop,allhorizontalgalleriesreceivenaturallightfromtheroofthatcanbecontrolledwith20%screensaswellasblackoutoptions.The20meterwidesectionoftheLightLoopallowssidelightingtothelowerlevelgalleries,andprovidesspacefortwogalleriessidebyside,avoidingdead-endcirculation.
Thebasicarchitectureisinsimplemonochromeofsandedmarinealuminumandstainedconcrete,withtheundersidesoftheLightLoopsinrichpolychromecolorsofancientChinesearchitecture.Thesesoffitsarewashedwithlightatnighttobecomelandscapelightinginshimmeringreflectedcolors.
Theentireprojectusesthemostsustainablegreentechnologies.PlacedbetweentheskylightsontheLightLoop,photovoltaiccellswillprovide80%ofthemuseum’selectricalneeds.Thereflectingpondswithrecyclewater,while480geothermalwellsprovideheatingandcooling.
TIANJINECOCITYECOLOGYANDPLANNINGMUSEUMS(2012)
OnreclaimedsaltpanandpollutedtideflatsatBohaiBay,China(justoveratwohourdrivefromBeijing),anewcityfor350,000inhabitantsisbeingbuiltfromscratch.FoundedasacollaborationofthegovernmentsofSingaporeandChina,thisnewEco-Cityaimstodemonstratestateoftheartsustainableaspects.Onethirdofthecityisalreadyconstructed,andsubstantialcompletionisprojectedfor2020.
TheEcologyandPlanningMuseumsarethefirsttwobuildingsoftheculturaldistrictofEco-CityTianjin.ThePlanningMuseumisa“subtractive”space,whiletheEcologyMuseumisan“additive”complement,areversalofthespacecarvedoutfromthePlanningMuseum.LiketheChinese“BauGua”or“YinYang,”theseformsareinreverserelations.
Bothmuseumswillbe20,000m2withaservicezoneconnectingthembelowgrade,bringingthetotalconstructionto60,000m2.AhighspeedtramrunningbetweenthesetwomuseumsconnectstothethecentralbusinessdistrictofEco-City.
TheEcologyMuseumexperiencebeginswithanorientationprojectionspacenexttoarestaurantandretailopeningtothegroundlevel.Fromthere,visitorstaketheelevatortothehighestexhibitionfloor.Visitorsproceedthroughthethreeecologiesinadescendingprocessionoframps:
EarthtoCosmos,EarthtoMan,EarthtoEarth.Atthegroundfloor,theEarthtoEarthExhibitionturnsclockwise,movingdowntowardstheOceanEcologyExhibitionlocatedunderthereflectingpondoftheplaza.FouroutdoorgreenroofterracesopenoutfromLevel2(EarthtoEarth)withlivingexhibitschangingwiththeseasons.
ThePlanningMuseum,entereddirectlyfromthesharedpublicplazadefinedbythetwobuildings,openstoanintroductionareaandatemporaryexhibitionarea.AlargeUrbanModelExhibition(alloftheEco-City)isfollowedbyatheoryandpracticezone.Digitalprojectionswillfacilitatethepotentialtoupdateandincreaseinformation.TransportationandindustryexhibitsfollowonLevel2withescalatorsloadingtoaninteractivesectionand3DCinemaonLevel3.OnLevel3,thereisarestaurantwithviewsouttothesea.EscalatorsleadtoLevel5withGreenArchitecture,landscapeandwaterresourcesexhibitions.Thisskylitlargeopentoplevelhasaccesstothegreenroofscape.
TheBohaiSeasitenearbyhasanancienthistoryaspartoftheGreatRidgesofChenier,whichdevelopedoverthousandsofyears.Thehugemoundsofshells,amagnificenttestimonytothepowerofnature,inspiretheslicededgesofthemoundsdefiningthepublicspacearoundthenewEcologyandPlanningMuseums.
AslicethroughtheEarth,likeaslicethroughtime,exposestheseshellspecimensembeddedinconcrete.PeoplecanalsowalktothetopsofthemoundsforgreatviewsoftheculturalbuildingswiththeEco-Forumandgovernmentcenteracrosstheriverinthedistantview.
TAIWANCHINPAOSANNECROPOLIS(2018)
Onamagnificentoceanviewsite40minutesfromTaipei,theNecropolisofPaoSanrequiresanewarrivalhalltoservethecomplex(with10,000existingburialsites)andanewpavilionfor150,000additionalashboxsites.Thearrivalbuildingwillcontaina21roomhotel,arestaurant,aceremonialchapel,anauditorium,andtwosmallmuseums.Thenewpavilionwillaccommodate1,000peopleforceremonialdays,aswellas50presidingBuddhistmonksconductingceremonies.Therewillbeanadjoiningamphitheaterwithseatingfor5,000.Allreligions—Buddhist,Christian,etc.—arerespectedandaccommodatedinthisNecropolis.
