Abstract
Tofindoutthesmokingandcognitivestatusofcollegestudents,theauthorsofthisessayhaverecentlyconductedasurveyconcerningthisissue.Furthermore,thispaperattemptstooffersomesignificantinformationontheharmofsmokingandwhatpracticalmeasuresshouldbetaken.Thissurvey,bymeansofdistributingquestionnaireonourcampus,hascometoaconclusionthatsomecollegestudentsareaddictedtosmokingandlargequantitiesofstudentsarenotawareoftheharmofsmokingthoroughly.Neverthelessmoststudentshaveaclearunderstandingofthereasonwhysmokingquittingandsmokingbancan’tbecarriedoutsmoothly.Moreover,largequantitiesofstudentsholdtheopinionthatweshouldtakepracticalmeasurestoquitsmokingandforbidsmokinginpublic.

1.Introduction
Nowadays,alargegroupofcollegestudentsstarttosmoke,thoughtheyareconstantlytoldthatsmokingisharmfultotheirhealth.Manycountrieshaveputoutsmokingbaninpublic.InChina,collegestudentshavedifferentviewsonsmokingban.Ourmaingoalistoknowmoreaboutstudents’cognitionaboutsmokingandtheirattitudestowardsmokingban,meanwhile,ourgroupdidthissurveyinthehopeofarousingstudents’awarenessoftheharmofsmokingandhelpingthemtoquitsmoking.Wefirstlystudiedaboutthereasonwhypeoplesmokeandtheiropinionstowardsmokingculture.Thenweinvestigatedaboutstudents’levelofunderstandingoftheharmofsmoking,andnextwetriedtofindoutthereasonswhyithardtoforbidsmokinginpublicandwestudiedthewaystoquitsmokeandmeasuresonsmokingban.Finallyweinvestigatedaboutstudents’attitudetowardstheeffectofquittingsmoking&
smokingban.Inthisessayacompactconclusionhasbeenmadeafterthestatisticsandthecorrespondinganalyseswereexamined.
2.Method
Tofindoutcollegestudents’cognitionaboutsmokingandattitudestowardsmokingban,wedesignedaquestionnaireconsistingofsixpartsrangingoverthereasonwhypeoplesmoke,theharmofsmoking,thedifficultiesofquittingsmokingandforbiddingsmokinginpublic,thewaystoquitsmoking,themeasuresonsmokingbanaswellastheeffectofquittingsmoking&
smokingban.Wegaveout100questionnairesinthelibraryofChongqingUniversitytothestudentsofdifferentmajorsandgradesandgotallofthemback.Oftherespondents,80%werefreshmanand15%weresophomoreandotherstakeup5%.30%ofrespondentsaregirlsandothersareboys.Ouranalysesarebasedonthedatawehavecollected.
3.ResultsandDiscussion
3.1.Reasonswhypeoplesmoke
3.1.1ThehistoryoftobaccoinChina
Nowadays,youcanseemanypeoplesmokealmosteverywhereandeverytime.ThereisnodoubtthattobaccoindustrydevelopsverywellinChinaeventhoughitdidn’toriginatefromChina.MyfirstquestionisnotaimedtofigureouthowmanypeopleknowwhentobaccowasintroducedintoChina,buttoremindpeoplethatithasbeenalongtimesincetobaccowasintroducedintoChina.Therightanswertothisquestionis16to17century.However,inotherpeople’sopinionsitshouldbealittleearlier.So,whydoyousmoke?
It’snoteasytotell.JustlikeaskingwhyChineseeatriceandEnglisheatbreadwhentheyarehungry.Isupposeyouwon’tgetanyexactanswer.
3.1.2Reasonscontributingtosmokingindailylife.
Amongourrespondents98%agreethatfilmsandtelevisionworkshaveeffectsonteenagerswhoareaddictedtocigaretteand77%thinkthefilmsandtelevisionworkshaveagreatinfluence.Weallknowteenagers’abilityofselfcontrolisnotverystrongsotheyarealwayseasilyaffectedbythingsandpeoplearoundthem.Whentheyseetheiridolssmoking,theywilljustfollowtheiridols’stepsinsteadofconsideringwhethersmokingisharmfulornot.So,inmyopinion,lot’sofpeoplebecomesmokersbecauseoftheiridols.
3.1.3Attitudestowardsfriends’smoking
Itiseasytogivesmokingwhenyoustarttosmoke,ifyourfriendsandrelativesstopyou.Butinmostconditionstheywillnottakerealactionstopreventyoufromsmoking.Ascanbeseenformthequestion2,lessthanhalfoftherespondentsareagainstfriends’smokingandmostofthemchoosetheanswernevermind.
Whatwillhappenthen?
SmokersmaythinkwhyIshouldgiveupsmokingsincemyfriendsandrelativesthinkit’sok.What’sworseisthatotherswillstarttosmokebecausetheirfriendsorrelativesareaddictedtosmoking.SowhatIwanttosayisthattheattitudemostpeopletaketotheirfriendsandrelativesisalsoareasonwhypeoplesmoke.
3.1.4ViewsonCigarettesasgifts
Thelastquestionshowedusthatpeoplewon’tstoptheirfriendsandrelativesfromsmoking.Sowhenyouareworryaboutwhichpresenttochoose,cigaretteisoffcourseagoodchoice.
Insmokers’opinions,cigaretteisthemostwonderfulgiftintheworld,sotheywillchoosepresentslikeexpensivecigaretteorsomethingrelatedtotobacco.Offcoursetheywillnotrefusegiftslikethese.Butwhatwillanonsmokerdoifhegetpresentslikethese?
Maybehewillsendthesetohisfriendsorrelativeswhosmoke.Maybehewillwastethemandthrowthemaway.Theworstconditionisheusesthemhimself.Fromthechartwecanseethatonly15%neverchoosecigaretteasagift.Apersonmaynotlearntosmokeifthereisnocigarettearoundhim,however,whenthereisacigaretteinfrontofhim,hemaynotrefuse.
Aboveall,wecanmaketheinferencethatchoosingcigarettesasgiftsmakesmanypeoplechoosetosmoke.
3.1.5Summary
So,doyouknowwhypeoplesmoke?
Firstly,ithasbeenhundredsofyearssinceChinesestarttosmoke.Whetheryoubelieveornotsmokinghasbeenaculture.Smokingisonepartofpeople’sliveandcanbeseeneverywhere.Themostimportantofall,manyadults,especiallymaledonothatethisculture.
Besides,manyfactscontributedtosmoking.Usually,itisnotyoutodecidewhethersmokeornot.Youmaybeaddictedtosmokingbecauseofyouridols,agiftoryourfriendsandrelatives.

3.2.Theharmofsmoking
ThroughthefirstpartwehavelearnedthatsmokinganditsculturehasalonghistoryinChina.Butnowadaysanincreasingnumberofstudentsseemtorealizethatsmokingharmstheirhealth,ofwhichcanbecaughtaglimpsefromthebeginningofmyquestionnaire.
3.2.1Awarenessoftheharmofsmoking
Howmuchdoyouknowabouttheharmofsmoking?
Thisquestiondealswithcollegestudents’self-assessmentabouttheirknowledgeoftheharmofsmoking.Accordingtomyfigures,ofthecollegestudents,halfofthemsaidtheyknewmuchaboutit,while35%ofthemdidn’tknowmuchandfewstudentsclaimedthattheyknewlittleorevennothing.Fromthisquestionwecanseethatmanystudentsthinkthattheyknowmuchabouttheharmofsmoking,butaretheyreallyknowalotastheythought?
Maybewecanfindtheanswerinfollowingquestions.
Doyouagreethatsmokingleadstocancer?
Whenitcomestothequestionthatwhethertheyagreethatsmokingleadstocancer,thosewhochosestronglyagreeoragreemakeup88%ofthewhole,andonlyseveralstudentsdisagreedthisopinion.Wecanunderstandthesefewstudents’choiceforthefactthattherearestillsomepeoplewhoareaddictedtosmokingbutneverhaveacancer.Facedwiththesefacts,wemustclearourmindbasedonscientificfigures.
So,thenextquestioninvolvesthescientificfigures.Whenaskedabouthowmanytimeshighertheythinksmokershavethepossibilitytolungcancerthannon-smokers,studentsgaveusasurprisinganswerthatonlythreestudentschose20~25times(therightanswer)andmoststudentsjustdon’tknowabouttherate,sotheychosetheanswer”Idon’tknow”.Itmirrorsthatnowadaysstudentsdoknowthatsmokingisharmful,butasforhowspecifictheharmis,theydonothaveaclearsense.Maybethisisareasonwhytodaymoreandmorestudentssmokeorintendtosmokewithoutknowingthatitruinstheirhealthdeeply.Ifthosestudentsreallyknowtheharmofsmokingandhowdeepthedegreeis,Ithinktheywillsaynotothecigarette.
3.2.2Theharmofsecond-handsmoking
Doyouagreethatsecond-handsmokingisharmful?
Anotherquestionisdevotedtofindingoutstudents’cognitionofsecond-handsmoking.Thenumberswegotshowthatamongthecollegestudentswepolled,83%ofthemagreedthatsecond-handsmokingisextremelyharmful.Onlyeightstudentsdisagreedandninestudentssaidtheydidn’tknow.Wecanseethatstudentswhoagreeittakegreatmajority.Maybeitshouldthanktothepropagandaofourgovernmentandthemultiplemedia.Wecaneasilyseemanyarticlesonnewspaperorvideosontelevisiontellingusabouthowharmfulthesmokingandsecond-handsmokingare,whichcontributetotheawarenessofstudents.Knowingaboutthis,wewon’tbesurprisedtofindthesimilardatainthenextquestion,thequestionwhichhasacloserelationshipwiththequestionabove.
