Purpose
ThiscoursefocusesonSTAsupportforSupplierimplementationofCraftsmanship,aswellasspecificcriteriaforselectingandimplementingCraftsmanshiptargets.Theidentificationoflinkstootherprocessesandtools,commonfailuremodes,andstrategicquestionswillbeintegratedthroughoutthecourse.
Goal
ThegoaloftheCraftsmanshipcourseistoprovideSTAEngineerswithsufficientknowledgeofFord’sconceptofCraftsmanshipandCraftsmanshiptargetstoenablethemtohelpSuppliersunderstandandmeetthosetargets.

GlobalCraftsmanship(GC)wasstartedtwoyearsagoaspartofFordCorporateQuality.SupplierLiaisonEngineering,asectionofGlobalCraftsmanship,chairstheSupplierCraftsmanshipAdvisoryCommittee(SCAC).Thiscommitteeconsistsof15ofFord’stopSuppliers(bothinteriorandexterior)whoseproductsarethetypemostaffectedbyCraftsmanship.NewCraftsmanshiptools,procedures,andprocessesthatarecreatedbyGCarereviewedbySCACtogiveSuppliersavoiceinthedesignofnewprocesses.

OneoftheguidingprinciplesofCraftsmanshipistocreateaseamlesstransitionfromcustomerexpectationsthroughDesign,Engineering,andManufacturing,andreturningtocustomersatisfaction.CustomersatisfactiondeterminestheoverallsuccessesofFord’sCraftsmanshipefforts.

Withoutgoingintogreatdetail,theprocessofmeetingspecificCraftsmanshiptargetsmaybeoutlinedasfollows:
AspecificvehicleisauditedbyFord.Demeritsandenhancementsareassignedforeachoftheninevehiclezones;
thisinformationisinputtotheGlobalCraftsmanshipAttributeRatingSystem(GCARS)database.GCARS“crunchesthedata”andarrivesatspecificratingsforVehicleQualityLevel(VQL)andfivesub-attributes(i.e.,VisualQuality,SoundQuality,SmellQuality,Touch/FeelQuality,andErgonomics).TheidentifiedissuesonthevehiclecomponentsandthecorrectiveactionstofixthoseissuesareenteredintotheAIMsystem(AutomatedIssuesMatrix).UsingAIM,Suppliersaregrantedaccesstodatathatispertinenttotheirspecificproduct(i.e.,theStatementofWork).Withthisinformation,SupplierscanworktheirproducttomeetCraftsmanshiptargets.
CraftsmanshipTargets
CraftsmanshiptargetsaredefinedbycomparingFordvehiclestothecompetition’svehiclesandareusedtodeterminewhereFordwantsthevehicletogetto,usingtheProductAttributeLeadership(PAL)strategy.TheCraftsmanshiptargetsaretypicallyspecifiedintheStatementofWork(SOW).
VehicleRatingSystem
GlobalCraftsmanshiphasdevelopedthenew-vehicleratingsystem(GCARS)andimplementationplantorateFord’sCraftsmanshipcomparedtothecompetition.TheratingsystemquantifieswhereSuppliersstandagainstthecompetitioninauniformsystem,throughevaluationofthesensory-perceivedqualityorusabilityofacomponent.
Thecharacteristicusedtodescribethesensory-perceivedqualityorusabilityofacomponentiscalledanattribute.Thefollowinglistincludestheprimarycomponentsensoryqualitiesandusabilitycharacteristicsandtheirrespectiveexecutions.

Theratingsystemreducesauditorsubjectivitybylimitinghisorhercallstothenumberofconcernsonly.Theseconcernsareindependentofvehiclelineorindustrystandardsandallratingsarecustomizedforbrand,segment,andregion.Vehiclezoneandattributeweightingaredrivenbycustomerinputdatafromresearchclinics.
DemeritsandCustomerEnhancements
FordauditorsrateavehiclethroughGCARSbymeansofassigning“demerits”and“customerenhancements,”asappropriate.Demeritsaregiventoissuesorconcernsregardingcomponents,basedonthesensory-perceivedqualitiesorusabilityofacomponent.Enhancementsaregiventosurprise-and-delightfeaturesthatacustomerwouldnotexpecttofind.Abasescoreisusedtolinkissuesforagivencomponent/systemtoensureasystemicapproachtoissueresolution.Ittakesonlyoneissuetoregisterthebasescoreforacomponent;
thebasescorecannotberemoveduntilallissuesareresolved.
Demeritscoringandenhancementscoringareseparatevaluesthatdonotaddtonorsubtractfromeachother(i.e.,onescorecannot“balanceout”theother).Forexample,itispossibletoreceivepointsforanenhancementandreceivedemeritsforpoorexecutionofthatenhancement.
TheGCARSsoftwareactuallyscoresthepointtotalsforthecomponents,zones,andtotalvehicle.Auditorshavenoinputintoactualpointscores.
