(a)madeundersection7oftheMotorVehicleStandardsAct1989;
and
(b)inforceatthecommencementofthisStandard.
1.3.2.ThisStandardalsorepealseachinstrumentmadeundersection7oftheMotorVehicleStandardsAct1989thatcreatesavehiclestandardwiththenameAustralianDesignRule62/00
MechanicalConnectionsBetweenVehicles,iftherearenoothervehiclestandardscreatedbythatinstrument,oramendmentstovehiclestandardsmadebythatinstrument,thatarestillinforceatthecommencementofthisStandard.
2.FunctionandSCOPE
2.1.Thefunctionofthisnationalstandardistospecifyrequirementsfordevicesformechanicalconnectionsbetweenvehiclesandtheirfitment.
2.2.Thisnationalstandardcoversadditionaldesignandconstructionrequirementsforvehiclesdesignedtobeusedincombinationanddoesnotexcludecompliancewithanyotherapplicablenationalstandard.
2.3.Mechanicalconnectiondevicesfor,andfittedto,allvehiclesspecifiedbelowaretobedesignedandconstructedtocomplywiththerelevantrequirementsofthisnationalstandard.

3.1.1.Thisnationalstandardappliestothedesignandconstructionofvehiclesassetoutinthetablebelow.

4.1.RefertoVehicleStandard(AustralianDesignRuleDefinitionsandVehicleCategories)2005.

COUPLINGREQUIREMENTS
5.1.LockingMechanisms
A‘Coupling’mustbeapositivelockingtypewithprovisionforasecondindependentdevice.Itmayhaveprovisionforautomaticcouplingandthelockingmustbereadilyverifiablebyvisualexamination.
5.2.Location
5.2.1.Unlessotherwise‘Approved’onlytrailersdesignedforusein’RoadTrain’and‘B-Double’combinationsmaybefittedwitharearmountedtow‘Coupling’.
5.2.2.ForNCvehiclesthe‘TowCouplingOverhang’mustnotexceed2.7m.
5.2.3.Heightoftowingpivot:
5.2.3.1.Forvehiclesfittedwith50mmpin-type‘Couplings’or127mm‘BallCouplings’theheightofthetowingattachmentandthe‘Drawbar’pivotsdeterminedintheunladenconditionmustbeeither875±
75mmor600±
50mm;
5.2.3.2.ForMAandMBgroupvehiclesfittedwitha50mm‘BallCoupling’theheighttocentreoftheballdeterminedintheladenconditionmustbebetween350and420mm.
5.2.4.Mountingof‘FifthWheel’and‘FifthWheel’Kingpins
5.2.4.1.Unlessotherwise‘Approved’,‘FifthWheel’assembliesmustbemountedinconformitywiththerequirementsof:
5.2.4.1.1.AustralianStandard1771-1987“InstallationofFifthWheelandTurntableassemblies”and
5.2.4.1.2.AustralianStandard2174-1978“RecommendationsforpositionsandheightsofFifthWheelsforArticulatedVehicles”orAS2174-1994“Articulatedvehicles-MechanicalcouplingbetweenprimemoversandSemitrailers-Interchangeabilityrequirements”.
5.2.4.2.‘FifthWheel’Kingpinsmustbeattachedtothe‘Semi-Trailer’skidplateinconformitywiththerequirementsofAustralianStandard2175-1990“ArticulatedVehicles-Kingpins”,AppendixD.
5.3.Markingandstrength
Unlessotherwise‘Approved’all‘Couplings’mustconformwiththemarkingandstrengthrequirementsasspecifiedbelow:
5.3.1.’FifthWheel’assembliesmustcomplywiththerequirementsofAustralianStandard1773-1990“ArticulatedVehicles-FifthWheelAssemblies”
5.3.2.‘FifthWheel’kingpinsmustcomplywiththerequirementsofAustralianStandard2175-1990“ArticulatedVehicles-Kingpins”.
5.3.3.Pin-type‘Couplings’mustcomplywiththerequirementsofAustralianStandard2213-1984“50mmPin-typeCouplingsandDrawbarEyesforTrailers”.
5.3.4.50mm‘BallCouplings’mustcomplywiththerequirementsofeither:
5.3.4.1.ASD18-1968“50mmBallCouplings(forAutomotivePurposes)”includingAmendment1or;
5.3.4.2.ISOStandard3853“StrengthTests”andISOStandard1103“DimensionalCharacteristics”or;
5.3.4.3.AS4177.2-1994“Caravanandlighttrailertowingcomponents-50mmtowballs”andAustralianStandard4177.3-1994“CouplingBodyforBallCouplings”.
5.3.5.127mm‘BallCoupling’
5.3.5.1.‘BallCouplings’ofnominaldiameterof127mmshallwheninstalledinthedesignconfigurationwithstandthefollowingforceswithoutincurringanyresidualdeformationthatwouldinterfereordegradethefunctionoftheassembly,norshalltherebeanybreaks,cracksorseparationofcomponents:
5.3.5.1.1.longitudinaltensionandcompression1.6⨯‘D-value’;
5.3.5.1.2.verticaltensionandcompression0.5⨯‘D-value’;
or
5.3.5.1.3.adynamicoscillatingforceof±
0.6⨯‘D-value’inthelongitudinaldirectionand±

5.3.5.2.127mm‘BallCouplings’mustbemarkedinletteringnotlessthan6mminheightwiththemanufacturer’snameortrademarkandtherated‘D-value’soastobereadilyvisiblewhencoupled.
5.3.6.Hook‘Couplings’
5.3.6.1.Hook‘Couplings’suitableforusewitha76.2mminternaldiameter⨯41.27mmstocktowingeyemustcomplywiththedimensionsshowninFigure1.
5.3.6.2.Hook‘Couplings’mustwheninstalledinthedesignconfigurationwithstandthefollowingforceswithoutincurringlossofattachment,distortionorfailurewhichwouldaffectthesafetowingofatrailer:
5.3.6.2.1.longitudinaltensionandcompression1.6‘D-value’;
5.3.6.2.2.adynamicoscillatingforceof±

6.TOWBARREQUIREMENTS
6.0.TherequirementsofthisSectiondonotapplytoconnectiondevicesmountedatthefrontofamotorvehicleordevicesnotintendedfortowingtrailers.
6.1.StrengthRequirements
Thevehiclestructureincludingthe‘Towbar’musteither:
6.1.1.beabletowithstandthefollowingforcesappliedattheintended‘Coupling’centrelinewithoutanyresidualdeformationthatwouldinterferewithordegradethefunctionoftheassembly,normusttherebeanybreaks,cracks,orseparationofcomponents:
