butsheneverhatedtheman.“Hehasnoheart,”shesaid.Andshewassorryforhim,becauseloveandpeacehadnoplaceinhislife.Inherownlifeshefoundtruelove,withJeanBernadotte.Butinthosedaysasoldier’swifehadlittlepeace,especiallyifherhusbanddaredtoquarrelwithNapoleon.

Whenawomanwantstopleaseaman,sheneedsagoodfigure.Iamtoothin.SotomorrowIshallfillthefrondofmydresswithsomething.ThenIshalllookreallygrownup.Ofcourse,Iamgrownupalready;
butnobodyelseseemstoknowthat.
LastNovemberIwasfourteen.Papagavemethisdiarythenforabirthdaypresent.
