Introduction
Thisbachelorthesisexaminesclass,genderandgenerationclashesinthemovieBillyElliot,filmedin2000andanovelwrittenbyMelvinBurgessaccordingascreenplayBillyElliotbyLeeHall.Thefilmandnovelarecompared,thoughthefilmversionishighlighted.
Thefilmisaboutanelevenyear-oldboyBillyElliot,whohasachancetochangehislife,whichisstrictlygivenbytheworkingclassbounds.Billyandhisfamilyhavetodecidewhetherhewillbeaballetdanceroraminer.Billy’sfatherandhisbrotherareagainsttheBilly’sdancingcareer.WhereasMrs.Wilkinson,whoisateacherofaballet,appreciatesBilly’stalentandshewantshimtoconcentrateonit.BillymanagestoasserthimselftoattempttheauditionfortheRoyalBalletSchool.Elliot’s’familycollectsmoneyforatraveltoLondon.AftersometimeBillygetsanoticesayingthathehadbeenaccepted.Billybecomesaprofessionalballet-dancer;inthelastscenehedancesthemaincharacteroftheSwanLakebyPyotrIlyichTchaikovsky.
Thefirstpartofthisworkisdevotedtothemainplotofthestoryandtheperiod.Theaimofthispartistogiveanoverviewofthecontext,period,theplotofthestoryandbasicfactsaboutthemovie.Thestoryissetintheyearsof1984-1985,thehistoricalbackgroundfeaturessubstantialpartofthestory.ThiswasatimewhenMargaretThatcherwasaprimeministerofGreatBritain.Shehadorderedtocloseabout20minesandafightwithTheNationalUnionofMineworkersbegun.TheMiners’Strikeplaysremarkableroleinthefilmandthestory.
ThesecondpartanalysesthecharacterofBillyElliotandtheothermaincharactersareintroduced.BillyElliotistheonetoreflectontheaspirationsofpeoplecloselyconnectedtohim.Andso,BillyElliotispresentedasacomplexpictureconsistingofdifferentperspectives.

Intheconclusioni.e.thelastchapter,aclassclashesandclassmobilityisarguedaccordingtheplotofthefilmBillyElliot.Apossibleperspectiveonthefilm’sbackgroundissuggested.Anambivalenceofthefilmingenderrolesisgivenbymeansofthemaincharacters.

Thestoryisaboutclassmobility;itisaboutaworkingclassboybreakingunwrittenrulesofhisclassandsocialstatustofulfilhisdesire.
ThemaincharacterofthefilmisBillyElliotwhoisasonofaminer,JackieElliot.TheentirestorytakesplaceinafictitioustownofEverington,intheNorthofEngland,namelytheDurhamCountyandin1984-1985.ThattimewascalledasaThatcherera;ariseofunemploymentisspecificforthistime.

Billylivesinonehouseholdwithhisolderbrother–TonyElliot,fatherandhisgrandmother.Theirhouseisasmallshabbyterracedrowhouse.BillyElliothastosharehisroomwithhisbrother.TheirmotherdiedinDecember1983.
JackieElliot,thefather,andTonyElliot,thebrother,arebothminersandbothareintheNationalUnionofMineworkers.ThestorytakesplaceduringtheMinersstrikein1984-1985.ForthatreasonJackieElliotandTonyElliotdon’tgotoworkbuttheyparticipateinaprotesteverymorning.Theyhavelittlemoneytoliveonwhichisobviousinthecoupleofscenes.Theyownnocarandthefurnishingofthehouseisdingy.
Inacommunityhallthefreetimeactivitiesarearrangedforyouth,therearelessonsofboxforboysandaballetforgirls.Theroomforballetisoriginallyinadifferentroomthantheboxingclasses,yetduetotheMiners’striketheymustfitinthesameroom.Theplaceforballetistakenbywomenmakingfoodfortheminers,asthewholecommunityoftheworkingclassisinvolved.
Duetothestrike,thepoliceispresentthroughoutthestoryandmakestherealityoftheminers’strikemoreprominent.However,theydonotgetanyspecialpartwheretheywouldbepresentedasindividualpeople.Thereisalwaysagroupeitherprotectingscabs,beingpresentonthestrikeorbackgroundofascene.
1.2SummaryofthestoryofBillyElliot
Thestorybeginswithasoundofboggysong,asongwhichsetsthetimeframeofthestory.Billyenjoyslisteningtooneofhisbrother’srecord,eventhoughheisnotallowedtodoso.Hepreparesabreakfastforhisgrandmotherandsoonhefindsoutthatsheisgone.Billyrunsoutofthehousetosearchforher.Billyfindsherinafield,sheseemsallpuzzled.Inabackgroundofthesceneonthefieldtherearepolicecarsandpolicemenreadytofight.InthebookBillyElliot,Nan’sreactiontothepoliceisaversion:
“‘Bastards’sheshookherfistatthem.‘Bastards’shescreamed.”(Burgess8)
