ThanksgivingiscelebratedintheUSonthefourthThursdayinNovember.FormanyAmericansitisthemostimportantholidayapartfromChristmas.Schools,officesandmostbusinessescloseforThanksgiving,andmanypeoplemakethewholeweekendavacation.
ThanksgivingisassociatedwiththetimewhenEuropeansfirstcametoNorthAmerica.In1620theshiptheMayflowerarrived,bringingabout150peoplewhotodayareusuallycalledPilgrims.Theyarrivedatthebeginningofaveryhardwinterandcouldnotfindenoughtoeat,somanyofthemdied.ButinthefollowingsummerNativeAmericansshowedthemwhatfoodsweresafetoeat,sothattheycouldsavefoodforthenextwinter.TheyheldabigcelebrationtothankGodandtheNativeAmericansforthefactthattheyhadsurvived.
TodaypeoplecelebrateThanksgivingtoremembertheseearlydays.ThemostimportantpartofthecelebrationisatraditionaldinnerwithfoodsthatcomefromNorthAmerica.Themealincludesturkey,sweetpotatoes(alsocalledyams)andcranberries,whicharemakeintoakindofsauceorjelly.Theturkeyisfilledwithstuffingordressing,andmanyfamilieshavetheirownspecialrecipe.Dessertispumpkinmadeintoapie.
OnThanksgivingtherearespecialtelevisionprogrammesandsportsevents.InNewYorkthereistheMacy’sThanksgivingDayParade,whenalonglineofpeoplewearingfancycostumesmarchthroughthestreetswithlargeballoonsintheshapeofimaginarycharacters.ThanksgivingisconsideredthebeginningoftheChristmasperiod,andthenextdaymanypeoplegoouttoshopforChristmaspresents.
