Abstract:
WutheringHeightsisEmilyBronte’smasterpiece.Asaworldfamouswork,ithasbeenresearchedbymanypeoplefrommanyaspects.Somefocusonthecharacteristicsofthemainactors;somediscussthelovebetweentheheroandheroine.Differentfromthose,thispaperanalyzesthelovecontrastsbetweenthetwogenerationsfromthereaspects:
sensibilityandsense,primitiveloveandcivilizedlove,hateandlove,todisplaytheidealloveintheeyesofEmilyBronte.

I.Introduction
WutheringHeightsisanovelwrotebyEmilyBronte,whichishermasterpieceandshowsherspecialopinionsofloveandmarriage.WutheringHeightsistheplacewherethestorystarts.Thenoveltellsthestoriesoftwofamilies:
theEarnshawswhoresideatWutheringHeights,attheedgeofthemoors,andthegenteelandrefinedLintonswhoresideatThrushcrossGrange.Mr.EarnshawhastwochildrenHindleyEarnshawandCatherineEarnshaw,andanadoptedsonHeathcliff.EdgarLintonandIsabellaLinton,thebrotherandsisterarethemastersofThrushcrossGrange.Theyaretheoldgeneration.Theiroffspringarethreechildren:
Cathy–CatherineandEdgar’sdaughter,Hareton–Hindley’sson,andLinton–HeathcliffandIsabella’sson.
Thisnovelcreatesadifferentworldwithdifferentloves:
CatherineandHeathcliff’slove,EdgarandCatherine’slove,littleLintonandCathy’slove,andCathyandHareton’slove.TofindoutthedeepthemeandanalyzetheidealloveinEmilyBronte’smindarethispaper’saims.
Asaworldfamouswork,WutheringHeightshasbeenanalyzedbymanypeople,suchasChenKun’sAnalyzeEmilyBronte’s‘WutheringHeights’(陈焜),E.L.Gilbert’sEmilyBronte’s‘WutheringHeights’,LiuWenrong’sTheHistoryofBritishNovelin19thCentury,andsoon.Theiranalysesarealmostaboutthereasonofthetragedy,theanalysesofthecharacters,thelovebetweenHeathcliffandCatherine,etc.ButlittleofthemtalkaboutthelovebetweenlittleCathyandHareton’slove.Itisalsoanimportantpartinthenovel.Sothispapertriestoanalyzethelovecontrastsbetweenthetwogenerationsfromthereaspects:
sensibilityandsense,primitiveloveandcivilizedlove,hateandlove,todisplaytheidealloveofEmilyBronte.
Intermsoftheplotofthisnovel,thewriternarratedastoryaboutlove,hateandrevenge.HeathcliffwastheheroandCatherinewastheheroine.Throughthem,“Emilyrangeshumanpassionsagainstsocialconventionswithextraordinaryviolence,whileatthesametimeretainingacoolartisticcontrol”(王佩兰,马茜,黄际英368).Originally,HeathcliffandCatherinewerelovers.However,CatherinemarriedEdgarwhowasarichandhandsomegentlemanbecauseofhervanity.HeathcliffthoughtCatherinebetrayedhim,sohechangedhisloveintohateanddecidedtorevengethepeoplewhorelatedtoCatherine.Butwhenwereadthenovel,wealwaysshowedoursympathyfortheirloveinsteadofcriticizingtheircrazybehaviors.
ThemasterstrokeofthenovelwasthemistakethatCatherinechoseEdgarasherhusband.Thismistakeinfluencedthetwogenerations’loveandlife.Thereweretwolovepatternsinthenovel–onepatternincludedCatherine,HeathcliffandEdgar–theadultgeneration;theotherincludedlittleCathy,HaretonandlittleLinton–theyounggeneration.Emilyusedthetrianglepatternstotellthelovestorybetweenonewomanandtwomen.AlthoughCatherineandlittleCathyweremotheranddaughter,thedifferentperiodsandtheirdifferentcharacteristicsmadetheabsolutelydifferentlives.Bothofthemwerethemostimportantrolesintheirowntrianglepatternsandranthroughthedevelopmentofthewholeplot.Theiropinionsandchoicesontheroadoflovereflecteddifferentlovesofthetwogenerations,sotheresultstheygotwerealsodifferent.
II.SensibilityandSense
HeathcliffwasanorphanbroughtupbyMr.Earnshaw.Catherineandhelovedeachotherwhiletheywerestillyoung.HeathcliffandCatherine’spassionforeachotherwasstrongerandmorelastingthananyotheremotiondisplayedinthenovel.Whentheyweretogether,theywerehappy.Later,shemetEdgarinThrushcrossGrangebychanceandstayedthereforsomedays.ShefoundthedifferencesbetweenEdgarandHeathcliff.Onewasahandsome,lively,culturedandrichgentleman,whiletheotherwasavulgar,badtempered,obstinateandpoorvillager.WhenEdgarmadeaproposaltoCatherine,shesaidthatsheshouldthinkaboutit.Infact,theanswerimmediatelyappearedinhermind.SherealizedclearlythatifshemarriedEdgar,shewouldbecomethegreatestwomanintheneighborhood;butifshemarriedHeathcliff,shewouldalwaysliveapoorlife.WhenshewasvexedwhethershemarriedEdgarornot,thereweresomedialoguesbetweenCatherineandherservantNelly:
“Whydoyoulovehim,MissCathy?
”
“Nonsense,Ido—that’ssufficient.”
“Bynomeans;youmustsaywhy?
”
“Well,heishandsomeandpleasanttobewith.”
“Bad!
”
“Andbecauseheisyoungandcheerful.”
“Bad,still.”
“Andbecausehelovesme.”
“Indifferent,comingthere.”
“Andhewillberich,andIshallliketobethegreatestwomanoftheneighborhood,andIshallbeproudofhavingahusband.”(Emily91-92)
CatherinecouldnotfindthereasonableexplanationsandtellwhyshewouldmarryEdgar.Infact,shedidnotlovehimatall,andhervanityorderedheraboutacceptingEdgar.Shemadethedecisionwithsense.
Inthenineteenthcentury–theVictorianPeriod,thenoblemenwereenormouslyproudoftheirsuccessandfullofthetemporalrankconcept:
statusisfirst,andmoneyisGod.People’sspiritssufferedfromtheintenseoppression.Humanitywastwistedwithoutmercy.TheEarnshawsheldaprecariousplacewithinthehierarchy.Eventhegentrywhopossessedservantsandsomelargeestatesalsoheldafragilesocialposition.TheLintonswererelativelyfirmintheirgentry’sstatus,buttheEarnshawswereonmuchshakiersocialground.CatherinewantedtomarryEdgarsothatshewouldbe“thegreatestwomanoftheneighborhood”(Emily91-92).Aboveall,thiswasthesocialcultureandhumanityonthattime.Finally,shemarriedEdgar.Inthenovel,weknewthatshewasnothappyasbefore,becauseshecouldnotforgetHeathcliff–themanwhosheputherallsensibilityto.
Catherinehadadoublepersonnalit.WhenshelovedHeathcliff,shewassensibility;whenshedecidedtomarryEdgar,shewasrational.Heathcliffleftthreeyearsago,andcamebacknowasarichmanandtheownerofWutheringHeights.WhenCatherinemetHeathcliffagain,shewasveryathrillandtoldEdgarthatHeathcliffwasbackwithanexcitedtone.ShewasEdgar’swifeatthattime,butshecouldnotthinkaboutherhusband’sfeeling.Justbecauseofherstrongsensibility,sheignoredallthethingsandstilllovedHeathcliffcrazy.Whenshewasill,shemissedHeathcliffandthelifeinWutheringHeights.Evenwhenshewasdying,sherefusedEdgar’scareandjustwantedtoseeHeathcliff.ComparingwiththeloveforHeathcliff,Catherine’sloveforherhusbandEdgarwasrathermildandrational.Shedidnotloveherhusband.Maybeitwasmorepropertosayshelovedhissocialstatusandwealthinsteadofhim.
Catherine’sdaughter–littleCathywasabeautiful,kindandliteratelady.Edgartook“Cathy’seducationentirelyonhimself”(Emily220)whenshewasyoung.Shegrewupundertheadultsandupperclasssurroundings.Shewasveryconsideratetoothers.LittleLintonwasherlittlecousin.Thereasonwhyshefellinlovewithhimwasthatshethoughtshewasolderandclevererthanhim,andshewantedtotakecareofherlittlebrotherwhowastimidandfrail.Asthesayingwent,“Loveisborninsensibility,notinmind”,butsheandLinton’slovewasborninmind,notinsensibility.BecauseofLinton’sweakness,Cathythoughtshehadtherighttohelphimandgivehimherlove.WhenLintonwasinatantrum,shewasalwayspatientwithhim,comfortedhimandamusedhim.Shedidnotrealizethatshewasjusttakingcareofhim,notlovinghim.Edgarknewhisdaughterverywell,sohedidnotagreewiththem.
Cathylovedherfatherverymuch.Whenherfatherwasill,shewasverysadandoncesaidtoNelly:
Icarefornothingincomparisonswithpapa.AndI’llnever—never—oh,never,Ihavemysenses,doanactorsayawordtovexhim.Ilovehimbetterthanmyself,Ellen;andIknowitbythis—IprayeverynightthatIliveafterhim;becauseIwouldratherbemiserablethanthatheshouldbe:
thatprovesIlovehimbetterthanmyself.(Emily270)
Cathywasaveryfilialdaughter,andshewasworriedabout“nothingonearthexceptpapa’sillness”(Emily270).Sensibilityletherfindthatherfatherwasthemostimportantpersoninherlife.Nobodycanreplaceherfather’splaceinhermind.Shewaswillingtogiveupeverything,includingloveandherbelovedLinton,onlyforherdearfather.Cathy’slovetoLintonwassensible,whileherlovetopapawassensitive.
FromthecontrastofCatherineandCathy’slove,wefoundthatthelovewithsensibilitywasmoreunforgettablethanthelovewithsense.
III.PrimitiveLoveandCivilizedLove
Primitivelovewasanaturallovebeyondthesociety.Itwasnotrestrainedbythesocialmoralityandsecularperspective.Itwaswild,crazy,pure,freeandpassion.Civilizedlovewasborninthesocialsoil.Itcorrespondedwiththesocialmoralityandsecularperspective.Itwascivilized,tender,sincere,un-freeandrational.ThecontrastofvaluespracticedatWutheringHeightsandThrushcrossGrangeplayedanimportantrole.Onesymbolizedwildsavagepassionswhiletheothersymbolizedacivilizedsociety.
