[Abstract]Thispaperbriefsthedevelopmentalcourse,manufacturingandapplications,aswellasfutureprospectofexcitationsystemsoflargesizeturbogeneratorsinChina,emphaticallyexpoundstheadvantagesofself-excitationsystemswithpotentialsourcerectifiersandmattersneedingtobenotedduringdisseminationandapplicationofthem.

Inthelate1970s,theperfectionworksofindigenouslargesizethermalpowergeneratingunitswerestarted,themainobjectsofperfectionweretheoriginal125MW,200MWand300MWgeneratingunits,theexcitationsystemsoftheseunits,exceptforafewunitswhichemployeddirectcurrent(d.c)exciters,weremainlyequippedwithexcites,whichincludedexcitationpowersource(permanentmagnetmachine,alternatingcurrent(a.c.)rotatingexciter,rectifiercubicle),slipring,brush,brushholder,aswellasde-excitationswitch,de-excitationresistor,automaticvoltageregulator(AVR).Attheendof1980s,themanufacturingtechnologiesof300MWand600MWgeneratingunitsofUSbasedWestinghouseCorporation(WH)andCombustionEngineeringCorporation(CE)wereintrodycedtoChina,theexcitationsystemtechnologytransferredbyWHwasbrushlessexcitation.Bytheendof1990s,theself-excitationsystemswithpotentialsourcerectifiers(self-shuntexcitation)weremostemployed.

Alltheoriginal200MWgeneratorsemployedexciters;theimportedtype300MWgeneratorswereequippedwithexcitersintheinitialstages,andcouldbeequippedwithself-shunt excitationsystemlater;theimportedtype600MWgenerators werefirstequippedwithbrushlessexcitation,andcanalsobe equippedwithself-shuntexcitationsystemnowtoo.Sincethese threeexcitationsystemsareavailable,itisveryconvenientfor customerstochooseanykindexcitationsystemtoequipthe recentlyproduced125(135,200)MWgenerators.
1.2ShanghaiElectricMachineryWorksLtd.Co.
Boththeoriginaldoublewaterinnercooling125MW(135MWnow)and300MWgeneratorswereequippedwithexctlers;theimportedtype300MWand600MWgeneratorswereequippedwithbrushlessexcitation originally,andcanbeequippedwith self-shuntexcitationsystemnow.Hencethreetypesofexcitation systemsareavailable.

Alltheoriginal200MWgeneratorswereequippedwith exciters,the300MWgeneratorswereequippedwithexciters orself-shuntexcitationsystem;the600MWgeneratorswith JapaneseHitachitechnologyintroducedemployself-shunt excitationsystem.The125(135)MWgeneratorsmade recentlycanbeequippedwithexcitersandself-shunt excitationsystem.

Theoriginal200MWgeneratorsalsoemployexciters;the330 MWgeneratorsjointlyproducedwithFrancebasedAlsthom Corp.areequippedwithbrushlessexcitationsystem,the domesticationschemeofgeneratorshaspassedtheappraisal andexamination,viewingfrommarketing,serf-shuntexcitation canbeprovidedaswell.
2.1Materialqualityetc.problemsofslipring
Materialqualityofslipring,ventilation,carbonpowder,brush holderanditsconstantpressurespringetc.problemsworried aboutinthepasthaveallbeensolved.Nowallslipringscanbe madewithouterdiameternotexceeding400mmandlinear speednotmorethan70m/s;theconstantpressurespring neededforbrushholderhasbeensolvedandcanbeplugged inandpulledoutsafelyandconvenientlyduringoperation;the qualityofbrushescansatisfytherequirements,butsome
generatorswerecompletedwithimportedparts.
2.2Selectionanduseofexcitersandbrushleseexchationsystem
Asaresultofraisingcomponentqualityofindigenousrectifiersandimprovingreliabilityofa.c.excitersandpermanent-magnetmachines,bothexcitersandbrushlessexcitationsystemmaybasicallybeselectedandusedinparallel.
2.3De.excitationswitch
Poorarcsuppressionperformanceofbreaksandineffectiveness ofmechanismetc.problemsexistedwiththeoldgenerationde-excitationswitches.Whilecertaindebuggingexperienceswere gainedathomeandmanufacturingtechnologieswereimported later,de-excitationswitchesyetcouldn'tbespreadandapplied throughoutthecountry.Consequentlymostof300MWand600 MWgeneratorsstillemploytheimportedd.c.de-excitation switcheswhenselectingandusingself-shuntexcitationsystem.
Theimportedtype300MWand600MWgeneratorsemployed brushlessexcitationwithoutde-excitationswitchesintheearly stage.Theoriginalde-excitationswitchesinexcitersystemof 125MWand300MWdoublewaterinnercoolinggenerators wereevershort-circuitedinShandongandthisexperience passedappraisal.Butwhenemployingexciterschemeandserf-shuntexcitationsystem,thed.c.de-excitationswitchesarestillfinalizedtoequipinthedesign,fortimewouldbedelayedwithouttheswitchesandburning-lossrangebeenlargedduringthefailureofgeneratoritself.
HebeiProvincehadsomeexperiencesinemploying"HebeiSKM-2O0automaticde-excitationandslipover-voltageprotectiondevice"inexcitersystemof200MWgeneratorsandinstallingde-excitationswitchesona.c.side,andtheseexperiencespassedappraisal.The660MWgeneratorsimportedfromGermanybasedSiemensCorp.inHebeiHanfengPowerPlantemployinvertersandde-excitationswitchesona.c.side.Itisreportedthattheyhavebeenrunningnormallyuptonow.Asforthede-excitationresistors,theindigenouszincoxidecomponentsaremostlyused,whileABBCorp.usessiliconcarbidemostly.
2.4Brushlessexcitation
SincethebrushlessexcitationtechnologywasintroducedtoChina,theformerministriesofMachineryBuildingandWaterResources&ElectricPowerplacedthecompletedcondensersandfusiblecut-outsasthekeyresearchsubjects,whichweresuccessfullytestedandappraisedonthe300MWgeneratorsinShanghaiWujingPowerPlant,butthedomestically-medecompletedproductswerenotformed,sotheystillrelyonimports.Asforthecomponentsofthyristors,usedinbothbrushlessexcitationandself-shuntexcitationsystem,importshavebeenmostlyselectedanduseduptonow.Thedrytypepowersourcetransformersareselectedandusedathomeforself-shuntexcitationsystem.SinceseveralenterpriseshaveintroducedthemanufacturingtechnologiesofdrytypetransformerinChina,theindigenousdrytypetransformersarethebasicproductstobeselectedandused.Theoil-immersedtransformers,which
weresimplylaidout,wereusedfor600MWsupercriticalpressureturbogeneratorsofABBCorp.inShanghaiShidongkouNo.2PowerPlant.
2.5AVR
Inthepast,neithertheAVRscompletedbyindigenousmanufacturersnortheAVRscompletedwithimportedtechnologiesfor300MWand600MWgeneratorswereadvanced.Theextremesamplewastherunawayaccidentof200MWgeneratingunitinShanxiDatongPowerPlant.Itwasfoundthroughinvestigationthattheunitwasstartingtoconnecttothepowernetworkatthattime.Whentheloadroseto170MW,theAVRfailedtofollowtoregulate,resultinginfall-outofsynchronism,whichinducedinstabilityoriginallyexistedwiththeshaftsystem,thusincurringruinousdisaster.TheinvestigationandstudyofChinaEPRIprovedtheaboveconclusion.Afterwards,ChinaEPRIresearchedanddevelopedmicrocomputertypeAVR,andtransferredthetechnologytoNanjingAutomationEquipmentManufacturerforproduction.
TheaforementionedAVRsmaybeappliedtothevarioussize generatorsandthreekindsofexcitationsystems(exciters, brushlessexcitationandself-shuntexcitation).Excitersand brushlessexcitationbelongtorotatingexcitationsystem,hence allarecompletedbyturbogeneratormanufacturers.Ifself-shunt excitationsystemisemployed,thenexceptsliprings,brushes andbrushholderswhichwillbesuppliedaccordinglyby generatormanufacturers,excitationsystemsmayfindmore alternativesuppliers,forexample,theself-shuntexcitation systemsoftwo600MWturbogeneretors(Hitachi-Dongfang
jointlyproduced)inShandongZouxianPowerPlantwere providedbyABBCorp.,someindigenous300MWturbogeneratorsselectedABB”sproductsandsomeindigenous300MWturbogeneratorsselectedUSbasedRolesRoyalsCrop”sproducts.
2.6Backgroundofdevelopingself-shuntexcitationsystem
Inthepastallthelargesizethermalpowergeneratingunitsemployedexciters,sincethemanufacturingtechnologiesofWH”s300MWand600MWgeneratingunitswereintroduced,Chinabegantoproducebrushlessexciationsystems.Theyhavebeenoperatingsmoothlywithlittlemaintenanceuptonow,butboththesetwoexcitationschemesemployrotatingexciterinwhichrotatingpartisthekeypartneedingattentionandregularmaintenanceascomparedwithself-shuntexcitationsystem.
ChinaEPRI,alterinvestigating,putforwardthereportFeasibilityAnalysesofAdoptingSelf-excitationSystemforLargeSizeTurbogenerator.Thoughstudyingtheimpactsofself-shuntexcitationsystemontransientphasorandtransientvoltagestabilityofsmallgridwithlargegeneratingunitsandlargegridsystem,aswellastheimpactsofself-shuntexcitationsystemonrelayprotection,theyconcludedthat,"itisfeasibletodisseminateandapplyserf-shuntexcitationsysteminlargesizeturbogeneratorsinChina:
(1)Thereliabilityofself-shuntexcitationsystemishigh,sincethereisn'trotatingpartinit;
(2)Consideringthestabilityrequirementoftransientphasor,itisfeasible
